      I think it's interesting that whenever there's a discussion on who's the GOAT on bass, almost all the other names brought up (Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, Lemmy, etc.) were influenced/inspired by John Entwistle.

      Yeah, the message is super relevant imo because it shows how every generation thinks they are going to do things in some radically different fashion but in the end, it seems like more of the same. We change the colors and flavors and styles but humans keep doing the same basic things over and over.

      I would say this is one of the Top Ten "MUST LISTEN" rock songs out there, by ANY group! For its sheer overpowering QUALITY and ROCKINGNESS, but also cos it's socially important and the very SOUL of rock and roll in many ways! Airplay Beats will NOT be disappointed, lol!

    The Who at times called themselves maximum R&B. The bands from that time really grabbed a lot of genres and made the rock sound. Was a great time for music

    You guys should definitely consider doing the whole album...It's one of the all-time greats. I got to see The Who perform this entire album from start to finish in concert - one of the best shows I've ever seen, and I've seen lots. Enjoying your reactions and your discoveries along the way!

    Maximum R’nB was a phrase used to describe The Who back in the day. Soul , Blues and R’nB influenced British music especially in the 60’s and 70’s.

    Should have let it keep going, it merges into Quadrophenia, main theme, an absolutely magnificent instrumental piece. I always consider, I Am The Sea (the short preamble) The Real Me and Quadrophenia Main Theme to be one piece and they should be listened to like that.

    The album is about the mod culture in 60s England the mods loved their Motown so it’s really interesting you guys picked up on the Motown sounds here. Hadn’t occurred to me before. The whole album is driven by the bass and drums of two of the greatest.

    Rock music doesn’t get any better than this. Peak Who. Who’s Next then this masterpiece of a concept album. They had so many great songs later but Townsend admitted that they could never top Quadrophenia. So glad you’re reacting to this album. Great work guys.

    Saw the Who in the 70’s. The ending you only hear in stereo but in concert they had speakers in the 4 corners of the stadium. The Quadraphonic sound going all around & back in forth was incredible effect.

    What you're hearing is Entwhistle's first take in the studio. Said he was just playing around. Other members loved it so much this was the one they used for album.

    Entwhistle played "Lead Bass" as a joke when they were recording this in the studio. The other guys loved it so much they kept it in the final product. That was his first and only take in recording it. Skillz.

    The Who promoted themselves as Maximum R&B starting back in 1964. They played Motown covers regularly into 1967, then brought back Baby Don't You Do It (Marvin Gaye) in 1971 shows. So, well spotted!

    Back in the 60's London, mods were into Tamls/Motown and the Who were a part of that. They also did a great version of Shout by the Isley Brothers.

    Just as a FYI, John Entwistle the bass player was just goofing around when he recorded the bass line. It was not meant to be the bass track, but it was so good, they kept it.

    Ya'll need to watch the movie. It's called "Quadrophenia" and was, I think, the first major and one of the few overall, professional albums recorded in Quadrophonic Sound(instead of stereo). Anyway this song is the opening scene and it goes on from there. The movie is NUTS. It's all about the Brighton Beach Riots in the U.K. in the sixties and will show you a crazy side of life you've probably never witnessed.

    If you do the whole album, which is highly recommended, it must be in sequence or you’ll fail to understand the concept. It follows a British teens struggles with growing up, addiction and failure. But the musicianship is off the charts. All written by guitarist Pete Townsend.

    Quadrophenia is a concept album by Pete Townshend… often referred to as a “rock opera”. It’s best listened to straight through from start to finish as the songs blend together ala “Pink Floyd” albums.

    The WHO are a Top Tier band. They have tons of great songs. Who Are You was recorded in 1978. Quadrophenia was recorded in 1973.
