    • @ronforeman2556
      @ronforeman2556 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      The late, great John Entwhistle wiped the floor with all comers. He and Keith Moon constituted the rhythm section that convinced you there IS a God. John's bass playing was as all over the place and infectious as Keith's drumming. They broke all the rules: Rather than metronomically lay down the bottom end and beat, they improvised CONSTANTLY in response to Pete Townshend's performance and Roger Daltry's vocals.
      Live, The Who lived on the edge, never performing a song exactly the same way twice. Yet the band was always tight as the proverbial tick. Risk was its own reward. That's why "Live at Leeds" is such essential listening.

    I remember the first time I heard this song when I was in high school in the 70's, I was just left thinking that I had just heard one of the greatest songs in history. I listened to it, by the way I bought the Quadraphenia album as soon as it was available and listened to Love Reign Or' Me by myself, anyways I listened to it over and over on the 12 inch 33 1/3 record of course with my headphones on and cranked up to maximum volume and to this day never in the least getting tired of it. It's right up there in my opinion with Stairway To Heaven and Don't Fear The Reaper as my favorite songs of all time. This Who song isn't a 10 though in my view, it's off the charts, a 20 outa 10 or higher. Pete Townshend I think doesn't get in the music world enough credit for his just plain all around virtuoso song writing, the lyrics, the keyboards, the synthesizer innovation, the stings and of course his underrated guitar work. Brilliant is an understatement and the rest of the band were fantastic also! The Who just all came together in perfect harmony and they have enriched my life so, so much. R.I.P. Can't imagine not having music like this to grow up to. Music was so important to young people back then, so bands had so much support to really flourish.

    • @allbottledup9513
      @allbottledup9513 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ll defend today’s youth, being that I am one of them, and today’s music. That being said, there was a very clear shift around the 2000’s that changed how young people view music and what kind of music is popular. We still have great artists, of all genres, but they’re less mainstream. Our mainstream music is mass produced, low effort, low talent garbage compared to that of the past. What I notice more than anything, and it relates to your comment, my generation just does not value music the same as y’all did. Speaking in generalities, we don’t care about talent, complexity, innovation, skill level, or anything really besides “does it sound okay?” and that’s a tragedy.

      It IS a masterpiece. One of my absolute favorites of theirs, and any bands. The poignant clear mountain stream of Pete's voice contrasting with the powerful, and beautiful exultation of Roger's voice on the chorus! Plus the the melody, music etc.
      There for me is only one song that's higher than that -
      "Pure and Easy". There's TSIO finishing up on first listening, and suddenly there's Roge singing with such beautiful poignancy from a different song... I'm like 'WHAT was That?!!?!?!!
      Blessed to hear it Live 2xs on the Who's Next Tour.

    As the song finished it occurred to me that it would be good to know that this song was from The Who's second rock opera, "Quadrophenia", "Tommy" is the first one. It’s the last song and wraps up the whole thing, so that’s why the ending is so long and drawn out. It’s not just the end of the song; it’s the end of the opera. Roger Daltrey is definitely one of the very best front-men/singers in rock, but all 4 are standouts. You need to do Pinball Wizard next.

    I saw The Who on their 30th anniversary tour in Tampa, Florida. In the old sombrero stadium. We went up to the top of the stadium to "eat a sandwich", and they started playing Reign On Me. Halfway through the song it started sprinkling rain. Right at the end of the song it stopped raining. We were in awe of the coincidence. The Pinball Wizard started and they push out this huge silver ball into the crowd. It actually looked like a pinball machine from way up there.
    Awesome concert, awesome band.

    Their use of synthesizer is sublime and smart. You almost don't notice it cuz it floats in and out or comes to the front just when it needs to. Alex did at the end-that whistle.

    Soooo I guess y’all have never seen the movie “Reign Over Me” starring Adam Sandler? This is the title song. Movie is from 2007, so maybe a little old for both of you? This one was definitely a 10/10. I could see it on Alex’s face before it was half over, lol. I vote for BEHIND BLUE EYES as the next Who 10/10.

      YES! Great movie, and the use of this song was so brilliant. I don't know a lot of people who have seen that movie - good taste you've got there.

      "Movie is from 2007, so maybe a little old for both of you?"
      The song is from 1973 when I was in junior high school. The movie just used it 35 years later. A little old for you? ;-)

    The play between "rain" and "reign" in this song is incredible the way Pete intertwined the lyrics. Quadrophenia is a concept album written from the perspective of a 16 or 17 year old kid facing that part of life that we've all dealt with and had to endure. Despite some of the dark places and despair Jimmy experienced throughout the album, at the end he finally realized that the only thing that matters is love. And he wanted it to reign o'er him. If you guys are looking for your next 10: react to "Bargain" off of Who's Next!!!!! I'd call that a bargain.....the BEST I ever had....!!!

    Passionately, The Who drive, expand and ascend, taking us on a roller coaster of emotions. Daltrey growls. One of his best.

    When I was a teen, this was one of numerous tunes that were 100% MAGNIFICENT!
    And the interesting thing was, the first time you heard it (them) over the radio, you could have sworn you'd been hearing it for years... It always seemed to me like a magnificent song that had been in the air all the while and just waiting for someone to capture it and put it on record.

    Always loved the way the melody on the synthesizer captures the rhythm of the ocean, the waves pulling in and flowing out. You can feel yourself caught in the movement of the water.
