I looove the stunt die in this game! Also the way they handle magic seems very fun; I like how if you are a more experienced caster then your spells are harder to resist. Reminds me of Dragon Warriors.
Fantasy AGE is my second favourite RPG system for solitary play because the stunt system makes combat unpredictable. I would add that Mages can cast spells in armour but they have to pay a magic point tax, which is cool.
Yeah I prefer the 1e book for its plain white background pages. I wish they have a “print-friendly” version of their PDF. Still ordered the hardcover though. Still waiting for it to arrive.
I don't know of anyone else who gives a design and layout analysis of the books to the level that you do. I find that so useful and something I think about, too.
Great breakdown as always thank you my brother! That combat movement/action system sounds very intriguing I def prefer a little more flex to the narrative within a combat. And that setting sounds really awesome and flexible to play in!
Thanks. Yah, it's a high power fantasy game but escapes so much of the bloat in other High Fantasy games. Rolls are simple. Modifiers are small, but meaningful. And the stunt mechanic allows for interesting stuff.
For beginner roleplayers, or DnD players looking for something simpler and lighter, would you go with Fantasy AGE 2nd Ed. or with Dragonbane? Been eyeing both of them but not sure which is best.
For my part, Dragonbane, but that’s because I don’t enjoy high heroic fantasy as much. If players want a more high heroic fantasy game with familiar concepts like class & level then Fantasy AGE 2e. It’s still in the genre but the mechanics feel a lot faster and free.
I love stunts. My biggest problem is that you dont stunt all the time. I actually prefer genesys because its essentially stunts every turn. Having an unpredictable amount of currency to spend every turn just adds additional engagement for when combat devolves to autoattacking
@@DMTalesTTRPG the fantasy flight star wars games are run using the system that would become Genesys. My friends and I tried that system as a break from fantasy and we loved it. Highly recommend using the digital dice roller though, as counting up symbols is tedious if you're using real dice.
Hey, I just picked up the core rule book. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on what the next pick up would be? Are the bestiaries helpful even though they are 1E. Is this whole line looking at an update? Are the Dragon Age books a 1-1 compatible? I know I haven't got it to the table yet but it seems awesome.
AFAIK the 1e Bestiaries are compatible with 2e. There weren’t a ton of changes. I’m hoping they update the whole line! I know Fantasy AGE was born from Dragon AGE, but I don’t have any information on how much has changed over the years. Sorry! Very cool game, though.
I’m currently running out of the abyss. It was written and published by a similar sounding company, green ronin. Green roneen must be a parallel earth company.
@@DMTalesTTRPG is it unique to their company? I’ve never heard it pronounced that way. As you know a ronin is a samurai with no lord ( gun for hire as it were). I’ve watched a lot of classic samurai films and I have a board game that takes place during the warring states period. No one has ever said roneen. Not arguing, just wanted clarification. I could be wrong about the pronunciation.
I heard them using it and it confused me too. But the rhyme is the point. They did say folks will even say “row-nin” internally, but officially it’s “row-neen.”

It’s a cool system, to be sure.
Stoked to see a mention of Dragon Warriors! Heavily underrated game.
Love DW!! @@Sanguivore

Yah, fantasy AGE is one I need to play soon, somehow.
Thanks for reviewing this game. It's hard to find thorough reviews for it and yours is excellent. Go Birds!
Thanks! Go birds!!

Yah I didn’t even mention because of my struggles with the layout, but the background texture is a tad strong.

Thanks! Layout fascinates me. I wish I was good at it myself.
@@DMTalesTTRPG I'm not a wiz at it either, but I do have a hard time following a messy one, too.
@BarbarosaAlexander I can do basic stuff fine, but some of the layouts are just AMAZING.

Yah, high power fantasy isn’t my favorite genre, but this is a really cool game. Thanks for the kind words, sir!
I have to look into this came. Character creation is pretty interesting. Really great review. My first I’ve seen on this game.

Looking forward to this
I hope I do the game justice.

Everyone seems to love stunts! I need to try them out. I still haven’t looked at Genesys at all.

Thanks for the heads up!
Do I get to use a stunt cycle for the stunts?
Sure you can, it’s TOTALLY in the rules and everything. REALLY.

I actually contacted them to inquire about pronunciation… Green Roneen is their official one.

@kingerikthegreatest.ofall.7860 yah, they said it was to rhyme with green, but they say “row-nin” a lot too so don’t loose sleep over it.
@@DMTalesTTRPG thank you.
you got it.
....why do you pronounce Ronin: Roneeen?? 😂
Because I asked the company and they told me that’s how it’s meant to be pronounced.
@@DMTalesTTRPG That is fun in a rhyming kind of way... but really hurts my phonics sensibilities.😬

Because that is the correct pronunciation.
