    Just a small correction. Staedtler was founded in Nuremberg in 1833 by Johan Sebastian Staedtler… so over a century earlier than you imagined with “1950’s”, but yeah you were close there with “pretty much forever”. I love this brand and just recently was turned on to their 2mm leads and “lead holders” (which to me is really just a mechanical pencil for 2mm leads, but there’s probably a historical reason for that name). Thanks for the video!

      Hi Brandon! Thanks for watching and the clarification. Nice to hear another one fall for that mystique the blue pencil German brand has on others. How can someone not like Staedtler, right?

    Thanks for the video! I was wondering about the 788. Just bought a new 780 today to replace one from about 20 years ago (that I lost). Strangely, it feels lighter than my old one. Must just be my imagination..

      Thanks for reply Mark! I believe they are still same but maybe, just maybe metal parts could be a different alloy which could make them lighter. The 788 does still remain same (compared an 80s one with a current one).

    I've never seen a 788C in Australia, consequently I never knew they existed, until I went to purchase more 780Cs online. To keep the lead sharpened, I use a 70 yo. Koh-I-Noor 992 Bakelite lead pointer.

      Thanks for writing! Well I noticed that the 788 is not sold or common in other markets and Staedtler pushed its 780 model. To be honest I like more the 788 as the grip is good and less sharp or rough than the metal on the 780. Wow sounds like the Bakelite lead pointer is a true vintage gem! interesting you use that and not the Staedtler 502 cylinder!

      @@senorstationery5503 Thank you for replying. Yes, I can imagine the 788 better balanced being all plastic. I do have a Staedtler 502. It was this sharpener that started my Koh-I-Noor sharpener collection, due to my curiosity into its design concept and origins. That damn Steadtler 502 has cost me money.

      @@channelsixtyseven067 Staedtler just does the 502 currently and has been for years and it's still expensive yet it's now made in China!

      @@senorstationery5503 In my last post, I forgot there was the Fedra 49, no doubt alluding to the year it came out. fortunately, I have both examples of a white-capped one and a silver capped one, both NOS. I'm wondering if that was the original Bakelite sharpener and the Koh-I-Noor 992 was a rebranded Fedra. They are identical in every respect except the color of the pot metal cap where the pencil is inserted. The KIN is a pinkish brown, metallic color. There was a large cup-sized version of the Staedtler 502. Instead, I got two examples of a cup-sized Koh-I-Noor plastic sharpener, of the same concept, both NOS. Staedtler is no different to any other company wanting to maximise its profits by cheaper production costs.
      To this day, I still don't know how I got mixed up in this mechanical pencil interest. I've now gone down the path of the dreaded fountain pen interest by purchasing my first fountain pen - a Lamy Vista. I quickly realised, I only like transparent fountain pens. They are known as "demonstrator pens".

    Kaweco Sketch Up Clutch Lead Holder i would recommend this lead holder it is very expensive but its worth it

      I've heard of it and just Googled it and looks very much like a KohINoor I have. Same leadpointer in puch button, same thic lead, pretty much similar, also in full metal body. I think it's probably more the caché of Kaweco name but a similar diameter leadholder would do, doesn't it?

    How do I sharpen the 788 ?
    Does it have a sharpener on the back?

    • @senorstationery5503
      @senorstationery5503  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need a leadpointer like the KUM 233, Staedtler 502 or any 2mm leadpointer. No, the 288 does not have a leadpointer like the 280 push button.

    Yo compre el 788 pero me di cuenta que el boton negro no cuenta con el sacapuntas que si incluye el de metal, una lastima porque ya no queria estar sacando punta con el cutter, sabes si venden este accesorio por separado?

      Hola Romy! Nno se vende el botón afilaminas como el del Staedtler 780 (que de todas formas no recomiendo, es mejor un afilaminas de cilindro o bolsillo), por lo que te sugiero el afilaminas de cilindro Staedtler 502, si te gustan las puntas súper filosas aunque no es portátil, es más de escritorio, o bien afilaminas de bolsillo pequeños como el Eisen 118, Faber Castell 50/41, Mobius Ruppert 314 or the KUM Onit 233 o 250. Suerte en tu búsqueda! :)

      Iconic pencils! Which one do you prefer and why? I tend to use more the 788 as plastic grip is more comfortable than metal grip on 780. Also got rare 773 in all plastic and have been using that one lately! Thanks for watching! :)

      Preferably yes as the lead sharpener on push button is just for emergency, the Staedtler 502 lead sharpener sharpens better! Sorry for late reply!

    I think the button in the 788 is not removable. I had the 780 for a while and when I bought the 788 my first instinct to replace the lead was to remove the button, but I couldn't and I was afraid of breaking it, so I haven't tried since. Can you confirm if it is removable in the 788?

    • @senorstationery5503
      @senorstationery5503  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Miguel, the 788 button IS removable, maybe yours was a bit stuck but it can be removed. I checked with mine and can easily remove the black plastic button and you may also load lead from back. The reason the black button is removable is the fact that Staedtler sells the 12 units lead boxes with a color button included at top of box so you can switch the black button for other color of buttons depending on lead grade, for example, orange, pink, blue, etc so that's the original intention on the 788 model, so you may switch colored buttons for lead grades, and the plastic colored buttons included on lead boxes of 12 units also fit on the 780 leadholder but you won't have the lead pointer on the metal button originally included in the 780. Thanks for your comment :D

    The silver top has a lead sharpener (the hole) not a "pointer". (Your English is 1000x better than my Spanish.)
    I prefer to use their rotary sharpener (keeps hands clean & has 2 levels of sharpness) and I replace the silver top with the different-colour coded-tops that are included w/leads to help differentiate between them.
    They have been my companions since 1978 and anytime a tool has been made out of plastic and not metal-the results have always cost me money. (I still have my electric hand mixer and B&D drill from 1982...)

      Those Staedtler Mars Technico are an icon for a reason, on same level as in Germany is the Faber Castell TK9400. I also don't really use the lead sharpener on push button (don't really use any push button type actually, also prefer the Staedtler 502 lead sharpener) and few lead holders are as well made even today as Staedtler. Other than Faber Castell I enjoy currently using the Prismacolor Turquoise 10C as it's comparable to the Staedtler Mars Technico 780 and it also fits nicely on the Staedtler 502 for sharpening!
