Just an afternoon job building a basic skid plate for under the engine with a few pieces of aluminum. But this mechanics job got out of hand and soon we were spending days building a proper temporary bash plate to protect the motorbike from all the rocks. For Honda Transalp.

A project that got out of hand but it should keep Atlas safe since we should be on the fun roads again soo. Will it do or are you calling Bob?
I must revisit my opinion about this bash plate. I love it’s It fits Atlas like a glove.

Ain't that the truth. I had side projects for that afternoon too once the main project was done.

You got me hooked with "Make Alp great again" some years back. This vid showed how far you came since then in regards of videography, cutting, crafting, riding, storytelling. I think, I might pop a can of Tuna and revisit some of your older rides.
Oh, I just loved how Alp and all its dents and repairs where like a diary of your travels.

I used to keep all my original components, but never did restore.
I've always enjoyed "craftsmanship" with a minimum of tools... old antiques, primitive arts, hand built machines, blacksmith work...this was no exception, very nice job Pedro. In exploring "greater Asia" and things related to motorcycles on YT, I've discovered a relatively new "motorcycle culture" in Russia and Ukraine that, in some cases "blows me away", brilliant craftsmanship using the most basic materials and tools and in some cases, building complete engines from scrap metal and salvaged parts. Here's a couple channels that are "BEYOND AMAZING", guys that build their own engines...

Nice work! I wouldn't worry about shearing the rivets; the bash plate isn't meant for rock crawling.

Pedro, with the frame tubes being round you could have used rubber lined P clips.
Thankfully my XRV650 still has the aluminium bash plate, but I have dropped some fuses and small nuts and bolts and the always seem to drop and get lost inside the bash plate.
You could also cut a v in it and hit it with a hammer so you can still change the oil without removing the bash plate like on the XRV Africa Twins.

I use a piece of industrial belting to block debris on the high side of the plate. Conveyor belting works great👍
You might lose some nuts or sheared off ones with them sticking out but...meh. great success 💪🤠

One way to hold two thin sheets of aluminium together is to use small coach bolts as rivets. All you need is a solid lump of steel or a lump of hard wood (end grain is best), and a heavy hammer.
The trick with soft material is to cut the bolts to the optimum length, file flat, and use tight fitting washers on the end that you’re riveting over.
It’s better than having those nuts sticking out. They will snag ant tear the plate.
Great job on the bash plate. Beat to fit, paint to match! Maybe when time and place allows have it welded and remove all catch points (hardware). Nice job!! 👍👍 Patten pending! 🤣

Great idea protecting the engine case with sturdy engineering! Its no fun having a rock punch a hole thru it.... happened to me once on my dual sport.

Gracias. When you mentioned the plate shearing I went all the way. I would have used washers too with the rivets on the inside if it wasn't for the closed shops over the weekend since I didn't have the correct sizes. Though the heads did pop nicely thick and short. I think it'll do.

That's quite a masterpiece of sorts, Pedro. Actually it came out better than I thought you would end up with ... ha ha haaaaa. You could make and ship out some to order to better finance your future rides ! (But then you might lose your zeal for rides and head the other way)

You might think about using some angle iron to create slider rails on the outside of your bash plate, bolted on with the thru bolts to keep them from hanging up when sliding over an obstacle.

most of the plates could just have been glued with TEC-7... less nuts that can pop of when you hit a rock
but it look really nice...
Gonna make one myself, to my old NTV650 Revere.
I was eying some big tubes in the sealant section but wasn't sure what was good, didn't take the chance. Used some stuff to glue plates repairing the alu panniers years ago but wasn't too happy with the the long term results. Cheers and all the best with that project.

not the easiest bike to get that kind of parts for...
TEC-7 will hold, but with aluminum it is important to remove the oxidation and apply the mass immediately, before the oxidation starts again, so you glue to metal and not the coating the oxidation forms
Love the bash plate. Your videos are always entertaining. I was just going to wash my 1984 Honda CB700SC Nighthawk and ended up completely rebuilding the carbs yesterday. Go big or go home right!?
Great to see a moto vlogger getting his hands dirty ;) The design looks very good but I would prefer not to have some many screws "sticking" that far below. They may catch some rocks or branches and you will be flying over the bars ;)
And walking around vaguely smelling like how metal tastes. Yeah same, though picked me flying over having them the other way around pointing towards the engine. Should be alright, we'll see during the real trials.

For a non-weld, off site job, I'd have to say you filled the requirement sufficiently enough to prevent most incidents. Interesting construct procedure. Thanks for bringing us along. As a Utilitarian I have only one question; Why did you take the time to remove the paint? That seemed purely aesthetic with no viable return on time or money.
Cheers. Cut that bit of info out but not paying attention I started bending with the red side facing out and I wanted silver side out, so red had to go. Worth it it in the end for the clean look on a rough design.
@@iPedroMota No worries, sounds like a reasonable decision. Since you had something similar on Alp I suppose bare aluminum is fine, although any mechanic in the military would scold me for even suggesting such a thing. Albeit there isn't rust per se', chemical electrolysis is avoided at all cost.

Have heard of a Transalp that touched a rock on a trail in Iceland, the oil filter was crashed, and the engine lost all the oil !
I hope your new metal plate protects the oil filter ? ! 😉
Yeah. When I put that little plate on in Australia the main goal was to protect the oil filter. In the end I rode all the way to New Zealand with that plastic thing barely hanging on. Along the way I did put dents in the engine and under the header pipes but I did try to take it easy in the rough stuff, worried about catastrophic failure like I'd heard in stories like yours.
Pedro, have you heard there may be a possibility of a new TransAlp? I have grown out of buying new stuff, but this could be exciting. I’ll keep flogging my 2004 BMW Dakar for another ten years at least.
I wish you had a basic workbench you made my back hurt. Those bolts on the bottom are going to create snag points. Now that you have proof of concept get someone to weld part of that for you so you can take them bolts out of the bottom.
