I’m 25, I’ve been going to “straight clubs” and I would always be bored… since going to Akbar and now hanging out with my bestie andddddddd IM A NEW PERSON! THE LIVELINESS AND THE COMMODITY is so amazing!!!!!!! And I can’t go back! I love it and the music reminds me of my dad. He showed me diversity and the AKBAR is that… a huge love diverse community ❤️❤️❤️❤️
This place was the original Mother Lode back in '78. I used to make tapes for them back when I was DJing down there. It was a Levis bar back then. The dance floor space was another business. The current MoLo in WeeHoe was the original Eagle owned by a guy named Buzz. Before that, it was The Hub from the '60s. The current Eagle 3 is now on SM Blvd down the street from AKBar. Pays to be old; you know the real stories.

See you in 3 weeks !!! Gday from Australia. I’m finally coming back to Los Angeles and this is my fucking favorite place to sit and make me friends. The juke box ! Even the atm. I’ve missed all of you
Was .my fav neighborhood bar when I lived in LA. Heck! I used to walk there there Sat. Nites after work from Casita. Great place for drinks and dancing 🕺
You’re not ready to support yourself? Or you’re not ready to support people you love? Which is it? Or is it that you’re still attempting to cling to your long-held religious beliefs?
I've never been to Akbar. I stopped going to clubs just before Akbar opened, but it sounds a lot like a bar I used to frequent almost weekly called the River Club in Silver Lake as well as another bar close by called Woody's. The River Club is long gone replaced by a huge apartment building, but I think the building Woody's was in is still there. It's on Hyperion. We would usually go to both places on the same night depending on our mood. After the bars would close we would go to the Astro diner on Fletcher to have a bite to eat. Great memories. I'm 60 now, but plan to visit Akbar later this year for the first time. Looking forward to it.
That's how it happened. I first noticed guys disappearing from the dance bars in 1980. No one knew what happened to them, other than, "He got sick." The plague was in full force in LA by '82, and I got out of the club biz then. I look back at the damage caused to survivors ftom.that era. and it's a wonder that any of us, the ones who stayed neg, have survived. Millenials and zoomers have zero clue, and they don't want to know.
Well, I disagree somewhat with these guys. It's not true that everyone died and all the bars closed down. I'm 60 now and still negative, and was in the midst of the HIV/AIDS back in the 80s. Yes, I knew many people casually through the club scene that died, and a couple of close friends also passed away, but the club scene continued. It never stopped. My friends and I kept partying hard all through the 80s, but we all got smart about protecting ourselves. Now, I'm Latino and maybe it was a more drastic impact in the white gay community, so their story would be different. I didn't hang out in West Hollywood very much back in the 80s though I did go to Studio One and a couple of other places on occasion. I mostly partied in Hollywood and Silver Lake. Places like Circus, Plaza, Woodys, the River Club, Le Bar, etc. I stopped going to clubs on a regular basis in the early 90s. Actually, I think more gay clubs have closed in the last 10 years than did in the 80s. Which is very sad in some ways. It was so sad to see Circus close a few years ago. I had so much fun at Circus. Spent many a Saturday there as well as many Halloween and New Year's Eve parties.
@@jeanpicard1844 Well the naming is very strange. What's wrong to ask how it came about? Or did they create it from their heads. Symbolisn in naming places is very interesting to say the least.
Not EVEN Studio One. Neither was Rage, although they thought so. WeHo was over with when the AIDS pandemic hit. It has never recovered. Now it's a tourist trap with $14 well drinks and shizz music.

It so nasty now. Nasty if you don’t have every single same old same old opinion as the rest of the progressive democrats, nasty if you don’t hold the same crazy viewpoints as them.. nasty in every fucking way. And then they claim they did everything you did, before they were even out of middle school!! 🤣 gay people nowadays need to get a grip and stop complaining about everything. But I’ll def feel more welcome in a place like this… well… unless… unless they’re charging all white people a “reparations fee” for every white person that buys a ticket or cover, like Seattle does.

The origin of the name is curious. Akbar means "bigger" in Arabic. Did that play a role in naming the bar?
Does it have to? Who cares if it did, or didn’t? Does everything have to have a justification or reason?
