    Yours is the best tutorial on stripping the paint/varnish from wood items with intricate carvings I have seen. Most forget the idea of letting the stripper do the work by creating a moist environment and they forget the all important clean-up phase with mineral spirits using steel wool. Without it the project results will end messy, particularly if you will be staining the wood. I am using your bamboo skewers idea for those hard to reach places on a piece of baroque carving. Thanks!

    Great advice, especially the covering of the Citrus Strip with plastic - I always read about using regular food plastic wrap, but the painters plastic (like dollar store stuff) which is thicker sounds much better. Thanks for your videos!

  • @chelseyummali

    Just used Citra Strip for the first time. I have an intricate detail on my drawers and their fairly deep. I can't seem to get all the gew out. I'm wiping and using mineral spirits and picks, but I just can't seem to get it all off. I've noticed some has creeper into a few of the cracks in between the detail (obviously it was glued on) and the dresser itself. Any tips or thoughts? Should I just let it dry out?

    • @CoastalUpcycling
      @CoastalUpcycling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks for the question, yes let the piece dry out for a couple of days. When you come back to it, you may have to reapply the citristrip and start the process again. As for gunk getting stuck in the nooks and details, try using a small nylon bristle brush with mineral spirits and scrub out all you can. Once dry, you can start the refinishing. Hope this helps, good luck and thanks for watching 😊

    omg I bit such a huge chunk of work for my first project, I use decided ''I want this'', first time buying something off offer up for DIYing, and it's antique Stanley Furniture set with six chairs, china cabinet, buffet and an unbranded MASSIVE wood table with two massive 3-leg pedestal legs, and gears in the middle, like clock gears to open and close the table to insert the leaves. so it has veneer parts on top and then marble center, that's also in need of some repair if there's such a thing as refinishing marble LOL and the Stanley chairs have carved legs and top, some sort of different thing on the sides of the chair as I wash it with water and dish soap and it turns white, oh and of course it has cane detail centered in the middle of it all why not LOL :D I know the original owning family got to USA in 20s and there's images with the china cabinet from the seller since the early 1960's so the manufacturing has to be between I assume between 30s and later 50's or literally 1960, how do I know? there's model numbers on the chairs but I can't find them, can find similar with less detailing, like, having only cane or carved models, but not all of it in one peace. same with china cabinet, I see similar ones, but without the intricate carving details. who do I even ask? hmmmm I need a refurb friend :D

    • @CoastalUpcycling
      @CoastalUpcycling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, sounds like you've found a treasure!!! I'm not sure how you can trace the model numbers to find out the year. Many times a date is stamped on the back side of a dresser or buffet, maybe the china hutch. The most important thing is that you love the pieces, that's going to make the refinishing personal and all the better. If you have any questions on specific techniques, or how to start, please don't hesitate to ask, thanks for watching 😊

      Hi Carolyn, the only sanding I was able to do was on all the flat areas of the chest. As for the decorative carvings, I just used the citristrip, mineral spirits and lacquer thinner until everything was cleaned off. Hope this helps, thank you for watching 😊

    Is there a stripper that works best if you’re not worried about harsh chemicals?

    • @tinaknutsen
      @tinaknutsen ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are all harsh chemicals…citrus strip just has a orange agent that masks the chemical smell. If you check out the data sheet on all the strippers citrus strip health hazards is rated the same as the other brands. So whatever you use were a ventilator mask and have good air flow.
      I realize you asked this 5 months ago.

    Some videos I've watched suggest not to use steel wool if you're using water based products after. I believe they say pieces of the metal can cause rusting. Do you find this to be a problem?

    • @CoastalUpcycling
      @CoastalUpcycling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I hadn't come across that issue, but it makes sense. Particles of steel wool can absolutely come off and embed themselves onto your piece. When a water based product his it, yes it can cause rust spots. To combat this I will use a dry paint brush to whisk away any steel dust. Then I'll wipe with a tack cloth. This should help left any remaining dust. If after that process, rust still appears, spot treat with shellac based primer. The shellac will hide any stains wanting to bleed through. Hope this helps, thank you for watching 😊

    What can I use if I cannot buy Mineral Spirits due to where I live?

    • @CoastalUpcycling
      @CoastalUpcycling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      🤔...that's a good question. If I didn't have access to mineral spirits, there's 2 methods I would try. 1.) According to the MSDS associated with citristrip, (Material Safety Data Sheet), alchohol is an element in citristrip. I would try using ordinary over-the-counter rubbing alcohol to try and neutralize the citristrip and clean the piece. OR 2.) Citristrip will dry to a chalky consistency. This only happens when all the paint and/or varnish is completely removed. Once dried, the chalky citristrip can be scraped off with a stiff bristle brush. Again if there is any gooey gunk left behind, the citristrip will not chalk over. You'll have to reapply another coat of citristrip and scrape again until clean, then wait for the piece to dry out. Hope this helps, sorry I didn't have a better solution for you. Thanks for the question, and thank you for watching 😊

    How do you strip round legs on a piece

  • @adasharel1259

    I have ton of ideas for recycling all kind of materials and convert them to furniture and other items. I see potential in almost anything but my problem is that I know nothing about using power tools. I am kind of scared of them. I am 59 years old. Maybe it’s to late for me???🙁

    • @CoastalUpcycling
      @CoastalUpcycling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Ada, I love recycling old materials to make new pieces. The important thing to remember is to have fun!!! I can completely understand the apprehension of work with power tools...there are so many different tools that do different things, it can be quite overwhelming. When it comes to safety, most all modern power tools come with safety features designed to protect the operator. I would definitely learn about each tool, what they're best used for and the safety precautions for each. Here is a short list of some power tools you started: circular saw, drill, orbital sander...Some non-power essentials would be a sturdy work bench or table, clamps, rubber mallet, Japanese Pull-Saw, hammer, screwdrivers, and some sand paper (120, 150, 180 and 220 grit). This is just a small list, but you be able to build just about anything!!!! As you get more comfortable, try some other power tools and see what you think👍...please check out this channel Woodworking for Mere Mortals, by Steve Ramsey. He has great tips on the basics of both power and hand tools for woodworking and carpentry. Hope this helps, thank you for watching 😊

    Oven cleaner works too; raises the grain, but what doesn't? Spray it on; let it sit for ten minutes; hose it off. , Only use outside for obvious reasons. GREAT for details like carved legs, etc.; comes clean as a whistle with no scrubbing or scraping.
