We were stationed at Spangdahlem from 4/1997 to 8/2001. We loved it. We lived i Bitburg housing and I drove the B-50 everyday to work at the NCO club on Spang. The prettiest and most fun drive.
I remember this drive so clearly, stationed four years at Bitburg and my wife was stationed at Spandahlem so we lived in between at Philippsheim. Great time!!.
Thanks for this and all your Communities Around Spengdahlem AB videos. I was stationed at Spang from June, 1971 to June 1973 with the 52nd Security Police Squadron and this brings back great memories. I drove this road many times in my '65 VW and while there are changes most of it is as I remember.
Wow. I was stationed at Bitburg from 1984-1990. This drive brings back a LOT of memories. A lot of roads, towns, buildings remembered. I think the round-abouts were put in after I left though, I don't remember them. THANKS!!
Thanks for sharing. Was stationed at Spangdooly [sic] AB when the sport teams' mascot was the Sheiks and later became the Sabers. Supported A-10 Warthogs and F-4s. Sadly, I lost my friend on B50 in a car accident. From what I recall, the road was narrow and many curves. I recall, some of us used to have speed-time challenges from Spang to Bitburg or Trier. Back then, didn't have passing restrictions, roundabouts or radars. Truly enjoyed driving through the snow because it was a beautiful scenic route but a different experience driving through the fog. Brings back many memories.
I was stationed at Spang from 71-72,...A battery,7th batallion, 61st Air defense artillery,......bought a 1959 Mercedes 190D so my Army buddies and I could tool around the area,......had some of the best times of my life.
You gotta love those summer weather with cloudless blue sky's in Germany. Especially on a Sunday after heavy binge drinking at the disco on Saturday night. Prüm air station 1978-1981.
Memories for sure. My Dad was with the 52nd TFW, 52nd AGS 1983-1986. We lived in Trier, then in ‘84 moved to Bitburg. We stayed at the Eifel Park Hotel Till we got into base housing in Trier. I’ll never forget it.
I was there pre traffic circles. 87-89 at Bitburg. I remember once on the old road coming up on a farmer on horse & buggy. I was going faster than 100km. That series of corners must have been eliminated. Also there was a 90 degree corner a guy missed on a 900 Ninja that seemed to be missing as well. I guess you can't go back. The old road wasn't perfect but it was special.
Stationed at 36 TAC Hospital Bitburg Air Base from May '69 to Aug '70. Barracks was across the street and we were right next to road leading into Bitburg. There was a French Casern a short distance down the road.
Lived in the Eifel Apr 1976-June 2016 drove this Strasse scores of times plus a thousand the road has been improved; it is scenic and as long as one uses their mind it is safe. Miss the Eifel.
They made many improvements to that route. I was stationed at Spang from 1987 to 1989 in Security for 52nd SPS. Not only did I drive that route I used to walk it at times. We didn't have restrictions on passing. I don't remember the first roundabout. A lot more guardrail than when I was there and I don't remember a center line for most of the route. The Thai restaurant was a Chinese restaurant when I was there. Still lovely scenery. Little interesting tidbit, there used to be a tunnel from Spangdahlem to Bitburg. A german contractor remembered it, his father had help build the tunnel. The entrance on Spangdahlem was on the golf course, I don't know where it came out on Bitburg.
Now, unless something has changed since I left in November 2010, the building on the right at 8:39 in the video, is a restaurant/brothel....I remember driving this route often and there was always a red light on.
Use to drive this route all the time between April 1974 to April 1976. It has really changed a lot. Sounds like the Germans still drive it the same way, but the Italians were much worse. Still recognize some points along the way. Sad that Bitburg AB closed, but at least Spang is still there.

Awesome, I was stationed at Spangdahlem from 1985 - 1988 and made this drive weekly. Great memories!
I was at Spang from 1984-86, and not one single day has passed where I don't think of that base.
I've been down that road many times. It was nice to see someone made a video of the drive.

Bitburg 1979 to 1982. It is beautiful there...we had a great tour there but it great to get home.
Memories❤ at Bitburg housing, but traveled this road many many times.

Interesting when I was there, I saw farm equipment there a lot. So yes, could have been a restaurant/brothel. lol
I drove that road many times in 1956 to 1960 and years later juat about the same road way.

So hard to remember the surroundings on the trip. (Teenage boys you know)
But “ I DO REMEMBER” the amazing farmers farming up steep hills!!
Back in the day, there was NO restriction to passing on B50
Bitte Ein Bit
I made that drive almost daily from 93-96. They used to call it Blood 50 because of all the accidents Americans had back then.
There used to be a nice club off of this road
Made that ride daily from Erdorf to Spang 81-88
We lived in Matzen. We used to take the 257.
Called out the Thai place before the graphic---EXCELLENT food there
no potholes, no construction not US
Doesn't look like B50 to me. I've driven it. I lived in Huttengen
Sadness
