Max's Bitburg Adventure. I am almost 60 now, but I remember my time at bitburg like it was yesterday. It was the best two years of my life. I was there from May of 1989 to May 1991. I was a single airman so I lived in the newest dormitories (which are now refugee housing) right next the flightline and dining facility. 4:07 in the video, third building on the right. There was constant jet engine noise. You got used to it and were able sleep right through it. Within the first month or so of being there I decided because of bitburg being in the middle Europe and the incredible beauty and fun things to do nearby that owning a car was a must. I went out to a local dealership and purchased a used Volkwagen GTI. The most fun driving I have ever had was in that car on the German roads. At some point during my stay I crossed paths with a German girl and we seemed get along pretty well so we shared some REALLY fun times traveling to events around the area in that car. Trier several times. Really loved Luxembourg. Did Fasching in Cologne. Wittlichfest, Bernkastlefest and the Grand Daddy of all in 1990, with East Germans present for the first time in 40 years, the Octoberfest. Almost more fun than the human body can handle. We drank lots of beer together. Her way more than me. And she was much smaller than me. But she was German and beer was a part of life. I accepted orders to North Carolina in 1991. In hindsight, not the most intelligent decision I have ever made. Goldsboro, NC, while not the worst place in the world cannot even be compared, in any way, to Bitburg, Germany. I could have easily asked for a consecutive overseas tour and stayed another two years, but didn't. Almost anything after Bitburg would be a let down. And Seymour Johnson AFB certainly was that. Hot, humid. The base was spread over a large area and I had no vehicle and, unlike Bitburg, no bus service. I had blisters on my feet within the first week because of having to walk everywhere in that humid, sweaty heat. I left active duty in 1992 partially because of where I was living at. I expected the German girl to follow me to North Carolina, but, luckily, she was smarter than me and eventually decided to stay put in Bitburg. It was the worst heartbreak I have ever experienced and I am no spring chicken. So, because of the location, the incredible experiences, and that girl, Germany, in general, and Bitburg, specifically, hold a very, very special place in my heart. I hope to return someday and reminisce, meditate, and drink a beer or two. It is much quieter there nowadays. Ich liebe dich. Bitte Ein Bit!!! ('89-'91, 53rd AMU, Hydraulics)

Although, I was in the Army stationed in Bad Kissingen, W. Germany, I can still remember watching Pres. Reagan's visit to Bitburg AFB and the WWII cemeteries near there on AFN. It's a proud yet sad thought to think of the millions of US military personnel and their family members who have served and/or passed through this base and others like it, so that Europe can enjoy the freedoms that it has today. It was a great service, really for the entire world. I would gladly do it again, as I'm sure a many of others would.

Thanks for the footage. I was stationed there from 90-93 with the 5/7th ADA. At the 3:50 mark, I believe that building to your left with the white lettering across the front of the overhang was the NCO club, where (Run-DMC performed a few songs for us.) The grayish white building was a hotel I think. There was also a restaurant or something at or near the hotel that served and delivered a mean calzone pizza too. Thanks again!

I was stationed at a remote site in the tiny town of Clausen which was about 20kms south of Kaiserslautern. We had a guy in the unit whose wife was pregnant and staying with her sister on Bitburg AFB. As one of only a few guys who lived on site with a POV, I used to drive Bob Flowers over to the main gate on our days off. I must have done that more than a dozen times or more before he PCS'ed back to the states. It was mostly at night so I can't say I ever saw much of the place but a few years later I did tour the Bitburger brewery. Seemed like a nice town.

I was stationed at Prüm air station, one hour north of Bitburg AFB. I would take the shuttle bus early in the morning that would pick up the high school dependents who attended Bitburg High School at the housing area to be bus's to Bitburg on my days off. Later in the afternoon the bus will pick up the dependents at the high school and return back to Prüm . The air station had two round bus shuttle trips Monday-Saturdays. Many times I would go to Bitburg AFB to go on a lot of their tour buses to all parts of Europe including that long ass tour to southern Italy. Germany was the best assignment ever for me.This video shows some areas that I don't recognize but the one's i recognize are around the library, MWR, cafetria, NCO Club, BX and Audio/Video store. Prüm Air Station 1978-1981.

God, I have some great memories of this place. My ex-stepfather was stationed here. I spent my 4th grade year at Hahn and then we moved to Bitburg. So I spent my 5th grade and half of my 6th grade here at the elementary school. We lived directly across from the elementary school. At lunch time I would leave the shcool to go home and grab a bite and a few other things with girls sometimes and then go back to school. LOL. As a kid, I had so much fun here. The school dances and all. It's funny that on someone's vid showing the senior class of '94, I saw a girl that I had a crush on back then. Of course she was a 8th grader then when I was in the 5th. Her cousin and aunt and uncle were our neighbors. Good times. if you get a chance, could you do a vid of the housing area and go by the elementary school and get a shot of the housing across the street from it? Our building was by a steep hill on the side of the buildings. We used to set up tents and camp out there. Also when it snowed, used sleds.

I was at Spangdahlem, I've been back there a few times, most recently 2022. In 2018 I went onto Bitburg Air Base w/my German friends and we used the bowling alley, I tried imagining us Americans using that facility back in the day as we bowled surrounded by Germans. So nostalgic being back, it was an awesome assignment that I sorely miss.

Lived there in the early 60s. Went to elementary school in the basement of housing units. I lived in 18-A-3 on Burnett Court. The building is gone, but great memories.

I lived there from 1960 to 1963. I also went to school in one of the basements. We lived at 27-A-1, I too have fond memories. We lived in Menningan before a place in housing opened up. I would love to go back and see the place. I rode a little bicycle down a very steep road, it had no brakes. Guess who got very familiar with a large cow patty...

@@dusty2774 we lived downtown Bitburg, then moved to Wilsecker before getting base housing. I learned to ride a bike on a German multi speed bike before American based kids had bikes with multiple gears. I likewise played with Legos and ate Haribo Gummi Bears 10-15 years before kids in America knew what they were. Definitely great memories and friendly people.

What a pretty spot ,should be a college or university, It always makes me sad seeing abandoned and disused places, it also shows how wasteful governments are and how they get away with it instead of being forced into keeping and maintaining bases and receiving funding only if they can repay the treasury the original costs, I love the eurofighter typhoon street lights
