Special thanks to Laeeqa for explaining the music video controversy, specifically regarding the use of the Hindu deity Ganesh during Lisa’s rap. In the month it took me to review this, the image had apparently been removed from the video, but no formal announcement has been made by the company. The problem involved placing the statue of the god on the floor, a place of disrespect, and using a religious deity as a prop. On top of that, the scene mixes pseudo-“Arabian” imagery with pseudo-“Indian” imagery (quotations because I’m sure they are not accurate depictions of either) which can definitely contribute to the idea that different under-represented ethnicities are “all the same”, when they aren’t. While I’m glad the statue imagery was removed, I hope the team will issue a formal statement. I’m not sure what Lisa’s religion is, nor do I think it’s her fault, but the placement of the statue was nonetheless hurtful, unnecessary, and cavalier, and could contribute to the normalization of appropriation and objectifying cultures for aesthetic payoff. The FURTHER ironic thing about this is that there are controversies between India and China rn (I don’t really know the details) but one recent scandal was that on an Indian news channel showing images of China they mistakenly showed BLACKPINK and referred to them as “Chinese strippers”. Indian Blinks and others were quick to call out the news station and the videos of BLACKPINK were taken down, but especially with the removal of Ganesh, this might have been a bit “overlooked” slight. 🧐
@@Withasideofranch yeah there's a lot of military tension between the two countries primarily due to a recent border dispute (China was mad about India constructing roads along the border but China itself has been constructing roads in the border area too. There was also a stand off because China was trying to extend some border road). The situation has really escalated and now chinese apps, products and stuff are getting banned and yeah...that ultimately led to this blackpink fiasco.
That's the reason I unstanned Blackpink. I really like the girls and think they have amajin potential but if I stan them and constantly stream their songs then I'm indirectly supporting the cruel ways of YG. its like twice and red velvet and others who debuted around the same time as blackpink grew in their music and concepts but yg won't let blackpink grow in anything, i feel sorry for blinks. the bridge in how you like that is the best blackpink bridge.
Part of this could be solved by giving them some solid B-tracks. Twice’s A-tracks functioned on similarity for their first few years, and they were really solid songs, and their B-sides allowed more exploration. But with Blackpink, even during their first mini, we got something recorded years prior, so I’m hoping they’ll really branch out this year.
You can even see it in Gfriend's latest comeback! They've evolved slowly over the years so now their discography has a wide range of genres and sounds while all of it feeling distinctly "Gfriend".
Teddy is a good producer. He makes good songs. He has his sound just like every other producer out there. But YG has to stop using one producer for every song for one group. It makes everyone look bad
That’s exactly the thing. I used to harp on Teddy a lot back in the day, but a part of me remembers how much I loved his older work, and wonders if he isn’t feeling drained when it comes to Blackpink. Maybe he’s just as ready to move on. Being cemented to one or two artists and their prescribed expectations is bound to make things a bit stale over time.
The work he did for bigbang and 2ne1 is amazing. Even Gaga reached out to work with him, but he refused. I'm afraid that he might be tired of our girls :(
This is 100% true. Many YG groups have a specific producer that works with them through most of the eras. But there's always a change and many members even take part in producing. That makes the other groups, such as WINNER or iKON grow. BLACKPINK on the other hand doesn't even get the chance to make songs. I'm quite sure that they would. That's what makes the repetitive formula that Teddy uses stick out.
I feel like it's also because of the new producers that he has been working with like R.TEE, Bekuh Boom and Danny Chung. You can clearly see the difference when you listen to the songs that TEDDY produced with older producers like Lydia Paek and Choice37.
I think that maybe he's being pressured to recreate DDu x 4? Since it was the song which kind of shot BP to fame internationally, and tbh it is the best one out of their last three comebacks which sound similar.

YG is sexist as hell. They push the concept of their idols being "artists" but in their history, the women in their company don't get to release their own work. We know that CL was capable of creating her own music, we've seen that in her last batch of singles she released after leaving YG, but we never saw that in 2ne1's discography or her own work. You don't learn how to create music overnight, it takes time to practice and learn, meaning these women have been creating things for years now, but never got the chance to release it under YG
Nguyen Girl exactly! I don’t know much about 2ne1 or lee hi during their training period, but I know for a fact when BLACKPINK were trainees they wrote their own lyrics, remixed songs for evaluations, and came up with their on choreography. Jennie and Lisa wrote their English raps for their sure thing cover and they are a thousand times better than the English raps they are given for their Japanese songs. Every time I here “I’m a star but no Patrick” I cry. Like how does YG expect them to be taken seriously in the western market with English lines like that. (I’m not saying western recognition is important but it’s clear that that’s the goal)
@@jaeliz6840 imo, this is YG's way of exerting control/influence over their female artists that will last even after they leave the company. It's why it's a predicament when people say they want all of BP to leave YG and join a company together and be a group elsewhere. So much of BP is heavily tied to YG's "signature" style, marketing, and sound. Trying to replicate that without YG would be hard, and they definitely could do something completely different as a group but it might push fans who liked them before for their musical style or image. It's really rotten of YG when you think about it, stay with YG to be a successful group with no music or leave YG to do music but not achieve the level of success that can come from a big company with large investments.
Yeah I feel like that sentiment you said at the end is something that is weighing on BLACKPINK as well as blinks minds for when their contracts end. Since they have been blatantly mistreated will they stay? As a dancer, it also frustrates me that even the choreography is formulaic. It makes me so sad to see the girls being limited in their artistic ability, especially Lisa who is such an amazing dancer. I really hope that the album actually comes out on time and also shows more growth artistically.

Blackpink need more choreography’s like DKWTD. That choreo was beautiful and honestly one of my favourite gg choreographies of all time. Hopefully when their album comes out on October 2nd we will have a more diverse discography and a Jennie rap. I’m literally praying for a Jennie rap. My issue is people saying “it’s just a pre release” as an excuse. Pre releases are meant to build excitement towards releases, and we are talking about a group who hasn’t released in over a year. This is just as important as the title track itself and it try to brush that fact off is just denying facts. I love the girls, but for a group having years under their belt they deserve so much more than what they’ve gotten so far.

I remember how Hanbin (iKON) said Love Scenario almost wasn't released because YG didn't like it. He had to push for a long time and it ended up being song of the year and one of the most famous songs in korea. How do we know Teddy doesn't have different concepts and songs for blackpink, but YG rejects to put them out?? A lot of 2NE1 and Big Bang songs have been produced by him and don't follow that formula. Same with Somi's last comeback. He's perfectly capable of doing another type of songs and concepts, but I'm sure YG prefers to stay safe with the same concepts and formula for the girls music. As Mera said, as long as the fans keep buying everything that comes from blackpink, nothing will change.

I really agree! This song was better but still within that same style. Choreo stepped up but still lacking in my opinion but they made up for it with their charisma. The dance break near the end was hella anticlimatic. I dont know i just expected something different.
The fact that the song producers, directors, managers and everyone else that's managing Blackpink and their comebacks know that they can give out literally ANYTHING and it'll still win more than 10 trophies, receive over 100M views and break new records hurts.
Yup, and that's why they continue with the same strategy because they know it will work every time. This kind of strategy would never work in a small company but because people fell in love with the idea of Blackpink, YG can release anything related to them and fans will go crazy. It's quite clever actually since they don't have to do much at all to keep the hype up about them. Blackpink is a brand that YG will keep milking as long as it makes profit.

I remember reading a comment after HYLT dropped that said something to the effect of: "This song would make an amazing drag queen cover number." and that comment totally changed how i heard the song but also made me understand the issues I have for it. (warning this comment is kinda long) Like you said, BP's music has been milking that same debut cow for a long time, and while some people don't think BP's lyrics matter all that much, i think they tell a really important story in relation to their brand. Namely the lyrical message of BP songs has stayed at "I'm very cool, very pretty, and very rich" especially in the last few years. It's not always said as straightforward as that, but at the very least the sound of the production and marketing/MV image bolster the message. It's why I find their cover performance of Wonder Girls' "So Hot" to be the most /peak Blackpink/ moment, it was literally a song describing in great detail how rich, beautiful and untouchable they were and it killed. I think that message worked at the time because having that image when they were rookies was so new and refreshing to the kpop sphere. To see a rookie girl group come out with full confidence and no fear and be able to hype themselves up was a really new energy. GG's before that, especially when they first debuted, relied a lot on playing into other people's expectations/desires and not making themselves too overbearing, when BP came out and said "we're already great and no one needs to validate us" it WORKED, it blew a lot of us out of the water. The "i'm rich, hot, and cool" lyrics were just there to bolster the concept that this new girlgroup was confident and not to be fucked with. But overtime that message stagnates. 4 years later and I can't help but wonder; how many times and in how many ways will they tell me how much better, richer and prettier than me they are? Now that they're actually among the most paid, most hyped, most brand dealed, most photographed kpop celebrities the message rings so hollow. It doesn't sound empowering or edgy, it sounds mean, it's not a new girl at school coming in with sass and confidence, it's the most popular girls at school bragging about how they're the most popular. People talk about the "better than you" attitude that exudes from so much of their music, but the bigger turn-off for me is the "richer/prettier than you" narrative. Like I know... I'm poor and ugly... the songs don't make me feel confident they make me feel like trash. BUT that's also why I think imagining HYLt as a Drag Queen song makes the song and attitude so much more compelling. Because drag queens are usually marginalized folks in their day to day life who are putting on the role of untouchable confidence. Hearing a drag queen sing about how beautiful and rich they are is still empowering because of that marginalized positionality, because you know that they probably aren't rich or particularly famous but they serve it to you anyways as a fantasy where marginalized folks CAN be all of those things and be the hottest bitches in the world. When I go to a drag show, my gay ass feels excited and empowered to hear that, it's why HYLT covered by a drag queen would run circles around the energy I get from this comeback. Blackpink may have once been able to serve that same empowerment fantasy, just by nature of being a confident girl group and producing music that didn't sound like what most ggs were putting out, but that fantasy is gone now. They are the most popular girls in kpop school and the most interesting thing they could do at this point would be to come out with something a lot more personal, introspective, or even self-critical. Something that humanizes them and actually reveals some flaw or crack in the perfect sound and concept we've gotten from them, or just work that reveals any personality trait that makes them seem more three dimensional than the capitalist notion of female empowerment they currently present. BP's music is really really often used as background music for Chinese tiktok/weibo accounts on street fashion/high fashion videos, this is especially true for HYLT but D4 and KTL were used fairly often as well before this. That's what the music is used for in a context where they speak neither Korean nor English. In other words: the sound of Blackpink is fashion. Maybe Blackpink is past the point of doubling down on how much, as you say “better, richer, prettier” they are, but that doesn’t stop their music from continuing to find the right people. Honestly as someone who hates 'I'm better than everyone' kinda empowerment, I hope BP changes their song content, it's always about empowerment which is good if it's really actually empowering instead of "arrogance somehow". I once heard a directioner said that 'One Direction wasn't a band, it was a brand to sell and make money'. I think the same thing is with BP. Their brand is 'i'm so badass so cold so untouchable' and it sells for now and one comeback a year is enough to keep everything afloat. What is incredibly sad it's the fact that if YG won't change things, BP will leave nothing after their disbandment. They always will be remembered as a group with recycled songs, minimum discography and no originality. They are just quick and easy cash grabs for YG. I will just wait for their contract to expire, so girls can show us what they are capable of, because current situation is just depressing. All what Blackpink comebacks improve in are that the mv‘s have a higher budget. That’s all. Not growing as an artist, nothing. No better or harder choreography, no fresher sounds, no uniqueness. All the money gets into the mv so people stream on TH-cam.

Totally agree. My bias was Lisa when they first debuted. But sometime between ddu du and kill this love I grew more tired of bp but somehow ended up more attached to Jisoo. I don't know what it is but she's now my fave and I have no regrets.
Honestly, Teddy's style is so over. He's stuck in 2013-2017. Just look that he is creating for Somi and BP. KTL, Bithday, HYLT and WYWF. All of them sound old. I'm especially sad for Somi because she has a lot of potencial. I am in the process of making an unpopural opinions video and I believe two points will be targeted towards him. It's annoying how one person is holding down these idols. I want to like them but this musical stagnation got really old. As you said yourself, in 2016 listening to BP was something fun, especially for a young girl in high school who had terrible self confidence issues. As time passed I have grown as a person, finished high school. I am not the same person and I like different things. While I matured, BP's music didn't. It's the same old Teddy formula. I think BP's music has an experation date. You can't stay the same for 7 years. I believe it's gonna be their last comeback with this formula or they will fall off. We can see that the market is changing. It''s no longer 2016. We have Everglow, Mamamoo, G-Idle, Itzy, Twice, aPink and many more other groups who are doing their own spin on the girl crush concept. People don't need to wait more than a year to get a badass song anymore. Not only it's a time, but also a quality issue. The groups that I stated before are more diverse and not as repetetive. If YG won't re-envent BP's style their place will be taken by someone else. It's just a mather of time.
people like hylt because it’s a blackpink song. any song will do well with their name attached to it because of their popularity which is a blessing and a curse. i mean yg can stick them with teddy and have them release the same mediocre songs without having to worry abt reinventing or being new and fresh while still having fans.
Exactly...It's kinda sad at this point. Yg has basically been depending on blinks since d4 era, after that yg made d4 2.0 and blinks ate up that recycled song. And like you said, it can be a curse, or a blessing. It's definitely a curse for them now. I mean, they might come out with a good song but as long as teddy is the producer, I wouldn't expect much.

Haven't finished the video yet, but I think the thing that let me down the most this comeback was the instrumental. Listen to the instrumental to Boombayah, PWF or AIIYL, then come back to HYLT - there's a noticeable emptiness to it that leaves me feeling unsatisfied. On it's own, it kind of sounds like music for the loading screen for a video game. That being said, it's not bad. It's a Blackpink song. I can't be too mad at it. 🤷🏾♀️
Me too, it is sad that my favorites are from 2017 (playing with Fire and stay). Beyond that it is wash, rinse and repeat, especially from their last 3 releases.
As If It's Your Last is the only BP song that I think breaks this formula, and is the only title song that I think is the most "experimental" out of them. It's also my fav title track from them. I really hope their upcoming album brings something new to the table.
And apparrntly not the most liked(?) From what i recall, i remember seeing the comeback while yes was cute, it wasn't what "fans expect of blackpink" aka the brand that they can kick butt. It was 50/50 but we fast forward time and everyone loves this song lol. Sort of like with nct 127's touch. That song wasn't loved by many fans at launch yet i have no memory of this because many nct fans i know LOVE this song. Similar with blackpink ya know? Both groups didn't debut with "softer" songs and have an established sounds so doing a 180 for many fans won't work. The difference here us like said in the video, blackpink didn't havw the chance to grow whereas nct did. Now will the proper title track of the album be "pink" concept...my guess is no =/ ice cream was the substitute for that. (Not saying ice cream wasn't a good song. Heck i prefer it more than HYLT) My theory of course because that's the vibe im getting unless yg surprises us lol.

Look at Twice. They knew the cute style wouldn't last forever so they tried to update their music/style. A group I like who is versatile is Got7. They always try something new and keep their original style there. Black pink have so much talent but they don't try anything new. Do a ballad. Look at rose' s voice she is a artist with a guitar. Jennie writes and raps, Lisa could choreograph a dance, and Jisoo has so much talent. I hope the next comeback does something new.

I think those debut days contributed to a lasting feeling of “the good old days” when it comes to Blackpink, which makes it harder to work through the current situation - one comeback a year, similar styles each time. It was also barely an hour and a half. So overpriced considering I’ve paid the same high price for three hour concerts. It was just... mishandled
Emilia that’s not really a high bar... like Korea is pretty much the only country doing girl groups anymore except, like, Little Mix. But anyway, I’m more pointing out that they barely have enough songs to fill a set and were trying to fill bigger stadiums in more locations than were warranted. It's rather whether or not they're worth the time and money- since it is now quite obvious that what we have gotten so far is all we'll ever get. It will come dressed in different clothes and hair colors, but it's still the same. In the meantime trends are going to shift and new groups will arise. How long can BP remain relevant with this formula? I don't really know.
Kanika Roy I can only speak to the Barcelona show, but my friends and I had empty seats on either side of us, and the standing room was... kinda embarrassing, like 15 people deep then just open cement floor back to the seats. @Emilia they are, but also, that article was made based of number of people who attended the tour as a whole, and bp were the group with more shows (31) therefore, more people, while the 2nd place came close with only 19 shows, and the other groups on the list had the most as 20, so it's more of a quantity thing
I feel like blackpink is an idea more than a group of artists.(at least that's what yg tries to portray them as) They sell you this facade of badass girls who are moving on from hardships, who wear high fashion and have catchy choruses and gestures. They are marketed as models on their Instagram and in music videos and have reality shows, like blackpink house, in which they have this certain aesthetic (kinda hard to describe) sorta like vogue-is, girly chic) that makes you imagine living their lives. That's part of the reason they have such a mass following.
Yep. Badass, pretty and rich girls. It's kind of an idealistic vision young girls have for themselves. They are portrayed more as models rather than artists. It just feels like Yg's capitalistic agenda and using the girls to milk as much money as they can. The company caters the fandom with so less content that the fandom will automatically like it without thinking. There was no experimenting with concepts, choreography and it got really disappointing.

The fact that the main rapper rarely raps, their main dancer doesn't have dance breaks, and they don't experiment with their vocalists contrasting bright and dark voices DRIVES ME ABSOLUTELY INSANE.

the girls are sweet, and talented individuals. When given the right stage and new experience their performances shine (Coachella). But the concept of them is basically a marketing vehicle. YG is selling the edgy popular girl image to people, and people who want that are going to gravitate towards that. It makes them great as influencers, but as proper artists (or just musicians) it feels empty. Some of my favorite bp moments are lisa's dance covers on her free time or the few instances we can see rose in the practice room singing and playing the guitar comfortably.
Okay, to be honest, I came here expecting you to completely tear How You Like That apart, but I think I walked out of it much more understanding and at peace with the song. Am I still disappointed? Yes, definitely, but I think the bitter resentment I've felt for a few weeks now is kind of washing away, and I think I'm starting to reconcile and separate my own personal feeling about the track with its actual quality and functionality. I agree, and I do get that the song does grow on people after awhile, so maybe I'm the only one that still thinks that the song seems empty to me. I just can't seem to accept this song at all. I watched it three times, and I still feel nothing. I don't hate the group, I think they deserve all the love in the world, and they deserve way better, but I just lost touch and feeling towards this song and their other songs.

Their rebellious nature may keep them out of the top three & behind Red Velvet, but no group has shown more growth, both collectively & individually, than Mamamoo. Three of the four members are among the very best vocalists in K-Pop & Moon Byul has much improved vocals, dance skills & stage presence, while becoming a top rapper too. All could have successful solo careers if they wanted.
Exactly, Mamamoo has always felt as four soloist coming together, but without outshining each other. They could all go solo if they wanted to, they are such incredible performers and singers. And they had all of that since debut and they have only continued to grow as artists.
@Arielle Louise Baradi I'm not sure if I can actually explain it but if you compare their older releases (which had a really strong classy vibe) to their newer ones (which are more on that pop side) you can clearly see their growth but not only in their music but also in their overall stage presence and their confidence they seemed a bit awkward at first but by now all of them are really inspiring and confident women (at least out of my perspective) So I do think that they grew really much from their debut days to now and will probably keep on doing so

The number of points I agree with is unreal. I totally agree with how many other kpop groups who debuted around the same time as Blackpink, have matured, grown their style and concepts, unlike blackpink who have been stuck doing the same thing for the past 5 years. They're over halfway a KPOP group's lifespan, and unless they decide to renew their contracts, we'll be sitting after their disbandment with most if not all of their lifespan doing the same thing. A great example of a kpop group growing over the years is Twice. For their debut we had Ooh-Ah, and soon got songs like cheer up, likey, etc. These songs were fun, catchy, and captured the eyes of many young kpop fans with the cute style and melody. As these fans grew older so did their concept. Twice began exploring new concepts with Fancy, Feel Special, and More and More. They developed a more mature concept which were great for the fans since they had also matured ever since debut. You can also take a look at Itzy, who is starting with a girl crush concept, giving great empowering messages which really capture the attention of young audiences. In the future, I can totally see Itzy developing into a more mature or more suitable concept for their audience as they age as a group along with their audience.

Interesting how whenever the bp members do covers and different dances, you see how they opt for more interesting songs/dances that match their growth, but hylt doesn't do that. Like rose going for those slow asmr like songs, jennie going for super classical songs, lisa is dancing in a more artistic style rather than sharp and strong. jisoo hasn't done anything yet unfortunately but i still have hope. Also, the way jennie's voice sounds kinda theatrical in the tokyo dome concert is everything. they changed their voices to make the songs more interesting

There are millions of "unpopular opinions" videos who say things just for the sake of coming off as offensive or "honest" when they're just being plain rude and disrespectful under the guise of "it's just my opinion, you don't have to agree". But you *actually* back up all your explanations with facts and logic and I simply *love* it. he is a very talented producer and all his hits prove so, the problem is I think he's either pressured by the higher ups to keep producing songs like the previous ones because of how much money they brought or he's running out of ideas, which is understandable considering how long hes been a producer and how many songs he's produced

I’ve been distancing myself from the BP fandom since the release of Ice Cream. Not only was the song terrible, but the fans were so toxic that they spammed the comments of the MV with the same comment to stop criticism from ever being seen. That is just keeping yourself in denial and forcing uniformity into the fanbase by pretending that everyone likes it. And not to mention the fact that the fans are so starved for new content that they will drool over anything, regardless of its quality.

@@turtle7701 There's different types of spam comments. The one you're thinking of is one such as "everyone agrees _____ is the best person on earth/a gift" posted like twenty times in a row. It happens in any fandom I think. I've seen it during both the releases of Butter and Permission to Dance since I was watching from the countdown.
I love how you pay constructive criticism but in a respective way. And you always include the thing you enjoy in each comeback not only the things that "disappointed" you. I've seen a lot of fans use the argument "it's just a pre-release" when trying to defend the song from people saying that the song is bad/underwhelming. That argument really doesn't hold up to me, because personally I think a pre-release should be a song that will get fans excited about the album; the quality should not be affected by its release date. HYLT isn't really getting fans excited for the release in a "wow this song is great so the album must be great too" sense, it's instead making fans hope that the actual comeback will be better than this. Perhaps YG should've picked a different song to release early and build hype with, or they should've forgone a pre-release altogether and worked on the song a bit longer. Maybe YG will see the discourse surrounding this song and go back and improve some of the other songs on the new album to make up for the disappointment this song caused a lot of fans. Though I wouldn't be surprised if the new album and title track are just as formulaic as HYLT and their previous songs.

Repetition and stagnation in musicality should not be awarded
@@meghan5992 I'm not asking artists to be completely original for pete's sake. Blackpink however, is so obviously formulaic that anyone can literally predict what their music will sound like. Their HYLT teaser alone already told me there will be an empty chorus after the beat drop. That's the point you seem to miss from me. There is not enough variety in bp's music. Other unoriginal kpop groups STILL sound DIFFERENT every new comeback. Bp's music has not changed after 4 years, that's the point, the only two songs that sound different are Stay and Whistle. What's wrong with having just as many of those types of songs as their usual hype songs? That's why I call them a repetitive group, they can't even change the concept in an industry that heavily relies on concept change. Blackpink are lucky they are from YG who knows how to market to their fan base by starving it and then forcing it for fight for scraps after 1 year 2 months of hiatus, otherwise they would have faded into oblivion for being this repetitive (momoland went downhill the moment they rehashed boom boom) and that should tell you something. Music is subjective yes, but anyone with a brain can see how formulaic some artists are. Same way you feel entitled to listen to formulaic music is the same way I feel entitled to expect an artist to sound different every comeback and dip into their formula only once in a while. For me HYLT aged like milk. The stages were pretty boring to watch, the choreo is nothing different from what they’ve done in the past. The lyrics were cringey and the extra noises and the end during the dance break were so unnecessary. Something needs to change, the formula won’t work forever.

Ngl I honestly don't understand how black pink got and is so popular. And it annoys me that they could really be something special especially all the work that they could do for women empowerment (which is really needed in the music industrty) but they're basically just social media models. If you look at what amazing things bts have created ie music about relevant topics, supporting and creating charities helping the youth ect. Lucy May YG marketing. hype around BP was built even before BP formally existed. Jennie was introduced back in 2012, same with lisa and even rose through gd featuring. YG would always announce or release sneak peek videos called “future 2ne1” or “pink punk” and show glimpses of trainees, telling fans they would debut in 2012, which got pushed multiple times until finally BP debuted in 2016. it goes to show, so much of it comes from YG marketing and anticipation building. and I do have to admit, YG was the big 3 company that was really good at creating company stans who would anticipate these groups
For me, I think the reason why Blackpink got so popular, especially in the west, is because in the west their just a Korean version of Little Mix and Fifth Harmony, even if they won't directly say it. Why do you think they didn't accept BTS, because BTS broke the west's boy band norms and that's weird for them, unlike BP, they just followed what's the popular girl band trends and they accepted it.
They can't write their songs and create their own message if they're still on YG, at least BTS in BH can write and produce their own songs, something that has never happened with Blackpink

I love how you don't just brush over a subject. You take a deep dive into it and you leave no stone unturned. I also agree with the 24/365 opinion. One of the biggest problems with blackpink is they feel so far away from their fans(which is the fault of the company). They are sweet and down-to-earth and normal but we never see that side of them, just the cold badass personas their company pushes on them. They don't feel personable and that's a trait I really like in the people I stan
People in the comment section seem to have trouble distinguishing popularity from success. BP are popular (mostly because they have a lot of charisma and a well crafted image on social media, as well as the fact that the girls themselves are absolute angels!), but they are not successful. Their albums barely reached 300 000 units (which is very good, but a minuscule amount when compared to say, their views on TH-cam.) Speaking of their TH-cam, they have staggering amouts of views, but it's mostly due to the fact that there is so little content and therefore fans can easily stream in bulk (having to wait years also makes them very eager to give the girls more impact). I appreciate Teddy's work, but it lacks diversity, and while having a flavor unique to them is good, rehashing songs and the same concept isn't. It's repetitive and I am starting to get tired of listening to their tracklists. YG is stunting their growth and it boggles my mind that a company so successful could not see this mistake that they are making. Therefore I believe it is deliberate on YG's part. In my opinion, Stay and some of the rap parts are my favorite when it comes to BP, and SURPRISE! these were written by the girls themselves. If they were given the opportunity, I believe BP's music would sound more genuine and less generic or "for the cool kids". As much as I love the girls, I don't believe their dicography is the kind that will be remembered decades from now, and it pains me. It's good for the club (which is not a bad thing in itself), but it doesn't have an impact on you, it doesn't inspire you.

@Emilia When you type on Google "kpop girl group with the most digital sales", the top 3 is Twice (16 million), Red velvet and Mamamoo (10 million). Not Blackpink. They are at #4 with barely 9 million digital sales. When it comes to physical sales for female kpop groups, Blackpink is not even in the top 5: they are at #10. As I said, they are the MOST POPULAR, but NOT the most successful. In fact, their strength lies in streaming services and TH-cam. Why? Because they have very little content, so it's easier to stream it. They also have a stagnating fandom overall (teenagers are their target audience, with around 64% of their fandoms being under/around 20), which means these teens are more connected and have more time to stream. Other fandoms see their fans spanning across several generations, most of them being 20 to 40 years old. Therefore they are less likely to spend time streaming, but will buy more albums, endorsed products and merch since they are active adults.

Special thanks to Laeeqa for explaining the music video controversy, specifically regarding the use of the Hindu deity Ganesh during Lisa’s rap. In the month it took me to review this, the image had apparently been removed from the video, but no formal announcement has been made by the company. The problem involved placing the statue of the god on the floor, a place of disrespect, and using a religious deity as a prop. On top of that, the scene mixes pseudo-“Arabian” imagery with pseudo-“Indian” imagery (quotations because I’m sure they are not accurate depictions of either) which can definitely contribute to the idea that different under-represented ethnicities are “all the same”, when they aren’t. While I’m glad the statue imagery was removed, I hope the team will issue a formal statement. I’m not sure what Lisa’s religion is, nor do I think it’s her fault, but the placement of the statue was nonetheless hurtful, unnecessary, and cavalier, and could contribute to the normalization of appropriation and objectifying cultures for aesthetic payoff. The FURTHER ironic thing about this is that there are controversies between India and China rn (I don’t really know the details) but one recent scandal was that on an Indian news channel showing images of China they mistakenly showed BLACKPINK and referred to them as “Chinese strippers”. There was also a stand off because China was trying to extend some border road). Part of this could be solved by giving them some solid B-tracks. Twice’s A-tracks functioned on similarity for their first few years, and they were really solid songs, and their B-sides allowed more exploration. I used to harp on Teddy a lot back in the day, but a part of me remembers how much I loved his older work, and wonders if he isn’t feeling drained when it comes to Blackpink. This is 100% true. Many YG groups have a specific producer that works with them through most of the eras. But there's always a change and many members even take part in producing. That makes the other groups, such as WINNER or iKON grow. BLACKPINK on the other hand doesn't even get the chance to make songs. I'm quite sure that they would. That's what makes the repetitive formula that Teddy uses stick out.
I feel like it's also because of the new producers that he has been working with like R.TEE, Bekuh Boom and Danny Chung. You can clearly see the difference when you listen to the songs that TEDDY produced with older producers like Lydia Paek and Choice37.
I think that maybe he's being pressured to recreate DDu x 4? Since it was the song which kind of shot BP to fame internationally, and tbh it is the best one out of their last three comebacks which sound similar.

I don’t know much about 2ne1 or lee hi during their training period, but I know for a fact when BLACKPINK were trainees they wrote their own lyrics, remixed songs for evaluations, and came up with their on choreography. Jennie and Lisa wrote their English raps for their sure thing cover and they are a thousand times better than the English raps they are given for their Japanese songs. Every time I here “I’m a star but no Patrick” I cry. Like how does YG expect them to be taken seriously in the western market with English lines like that. (I’m not saying western recognition is important but it’s clear that that’s the goal)

It's why it's a predicament when people say they want all of BP to leave YG and join a company together and be a group elsewhere. So much of BP is heavily tied to YG's "signature" style, marketing, and sound. Trying to replicate that without YG would be hard, and they definitely could do something completely different as a group but it might push fans who liked them before for their musical style or image. It's really rotten of YG when you think about it, stay with YG to be a successful group with no music or leave YG to do music but not achieve the level of success that can come from a big company with large investments.

He had to push for a long time and it ended up being song of the year and one of the most famous songs in korea. How do we know Teddy doesn't have different concepts and songs for blackpink, but YG rejects to put them out?? A lot of 2NE1 and Big Bang songs have been produced by him and don't follow that formula. Same with Somi's last comeback. He's perfectly capable of doing another type of songs and concepts, but I'm sure YG prefers to stay safe with the same concepts and formula for the girls music. As Mera said, as long as the fans keep buying everything that comes from blackpink, nothing will change.

I really agree! This song was better but still within that same style. Choreo stepped up but still lacking in my opinion but they made up for it with their charisma. The dance break near the end was hella anticlimatic. I dont know i just expected something different.
The fact that the song producers, directors, managers and everyone else that's managing Blackpink and their comebacks know that they can give out literally ANYTHING and it'll still win more than 10 trophies, receive over 100M views and break new records hurts.
Yup, and that's why they continue with the same strategy because they know it will work every time. This kind of strategy would never work in a small company but because people fell in love with the idea of Blackpink, YG can release anything related to them and fans will go crazy. It's quite clever actually since they don't have to do much at all to keep the hype up about them. Blackpink is a brand that YG will keep milking as long as it makes profit.

I remember reading a comment after HYLT dropped that said something to the effect of: "This song would make an amazing drag queen cover number." and that comment totally changed how i heard the song but also made me understand the issues I have for it. (warning this comment is kinda long)
Like you said, BP's music has been milking that same debut cow for a long time, and while some people don't think BP's lyrics matter all that much, i think they tell a really important story in relation to their brand. Namely the lyrical message of BP songs has stayed at "I'm very cool, very pretty, and very rich" especially in the last few years. It's not always said as straightforward as that, but at the very least the sound of the production and marketing/MV image bolster the message. It's why I find their cover performance of Wonder Girls' "So Hot" to be the most /peak Blackpink/ moment, it was literally a song describing in great detail how rich, beautiful and untouchable they were and it killed.
I think that message worked at the time because having that image when they were rookies was so new and refreshing to the kpop sphere. To see a rookie girl group come out with full confidence and no fear and be able to hype themselves up was a really new energy. GG's before that, especially when they first debuted, relied a lot on playing into other people's expectations/desires and not making themselves too overbearing, when BP came out and said "we're already great and no one needs to validate us" it WORKED, it blew a lot of us out of the water. The "i'm rich, hot, and cool" lyrics were just there to bolster the concept that this new girlgroup was confident and not to be fucked with.
But overtime that message stagnates. 4 years later and I can't help but wonder; how many times and in how many ways will they tell me how much better, richer and prettier than me they are? Now that they're actually among the most paid, most hyped, most brand dealed, most photographed kpop celebrities the message rings so hollow. It doesn't sound empowering or edgy, it sounds mean, it's not a new girl at school coming in with sass and confidence, it's the most popular girls at school bragging about how they're the most popular. People talk about the "better than you" attitude that exudes from so much of their music, but the bigger turn-off for me is the "richer/prettier than you" narrative. Like I know... I'm poor and ugly... the songs don't make me feel confident they make me feel like trash.
BUT that's also why I think imagining HYLt as a Drag Queen song makes the song and attitude so much more compelling. Because drag queens are usually marginalized folks in their day to day life who are putting on the role of untouchable confidence. Hearing a drag queen sing about how beautiful and rich they are is still empowering because of that marginalized positionality, because you know that they probably aren't rich or particularly famous but they serve it to you anyways as a fantasy where marginalized folks CAN be all of those things and be the hottest bitches in the world. When I go to a drag show, my gay ass feels excited and empowered to hear that, it's why HYLT covered by a drag queen would run circles around the energy I get from this comeback.
Blackpink may have once been able to serve that same empowerment fantasy, just by nature of being a confident girl group and producing music that didn't sound like what most ggs were putting out, but that fantasy is gone now. They are the most popular girls in kpop school and the most interesting thing they could do at this point would be to come out with something a lot more personal, introspective, or even self-critical. Something that humanizes them and actually reveals some flaw or crack in the perfect sound and concept we've gotten from them, or just work that reveals any personality trait that makes them seem more three dimensional than the capitalist notion of female empowerment they currently present.

BP's music is really really often used as background music for Chinese tiktok/weibo accounts on street fashion/high fashion videos, this is especially true for HYLT but D4 and KTL were used fairly often as well before this. This comment is a great example of music being what you make it. Maybe Blackpink is past the point of doubling down on how much, as you say “better, richer, prettier” they are, but that doesn’t stop their music from continuing to find the right people. I think it’s totally normal for people to realize not everything is made for them, and for the drag queen who loves the hell out of this song, or the 15-16 year old girl who listens to it in between classes, that’s what music is about. Sometimes, the person who really makes music music, isn’t the producer. I loved this perspective, easily one of the best comments I’ve ever read.

This is what I’ve been thinking, I would love something more personal from them, the message they’ve been conveying in the lyrics of their songs for the past few years just isn’t it to me, but the songs are catchy which is why a lot of people can’t help listening to it. Honestly as someone who hates 'I'm better than everyone' kinda empowerment, I hope BP changes their song content, it's always about empowerment which is good if it's really actually empowering instead of "arrogance somehow". Since dddd their message have literally been the same. It's sad cause YG is definitely pursuing 2ne1 image for BP but 2ne1 was one tough group who showed and used vulnerability to their advantage while BP is just tough image, nothing more, even the girls in real life aren't actually tough at all. if we were to compare the musical trajectory of 2ne1 and bp, the year 2ne1 turned 4, they had already released 2 EPs and a full length album, and they were already showcasing a level of musical versatility that was hard to compete with (falling in love, do you love me, and missing you all in 2013 as promotion tracks!).

I once heard a directioner said that 'One Direction wasn't a band, it was a brand to sell and make money'. I think the same thing is with BP. Their brand is 'i'm so badass so cold so untouchable' and it sells for now and one comeback a year is enough to keep everything afloat.
What is incredibly sad it's the fact that if YG won't change things, BP will leave nothing after their disbandment. They always will be remembered as a group with recycled songs, minimum discography and no originality. They are just quick and easy cash grabs for YG. I will just wait for their contract to expire, so girls can show us what they are capable of, because current situation is just depressing.
Edit: I should've said it earlier: obviously every group is a brand to a certain extent, but in my opinion BP are the brand before they are musicians. Like Mera said: 'their instagrams are more active than their Spotify'. 1D was a brand with little to no artistic freedom, but they put out a lot of music so that wasn't that conspicuous. YG doesn't bother to do the same with BP, that's what make people say 'they are just models for brand deals'.

Its honestly so disappointing because TEDDY is capable of so much more. The work hes done for bigbang and (especially) 2ne1 is amazing. Even Lady Gaga reached out to work with him, but he refused so he can focus on 2ne1. This man is capable of so much better and I'm afraid that he might be tired of BLACKPINK. I don’t think blinks realize how much power they have. If they stopped blindly streaming and buying bp merch or albums or songs, yg would lose sm money. BP is keepin yg afloat at this point. Honestly, Teddy's style is so over. He's stuck in 2013-2017. Just look that he is creating for Somi and BP. KTL, Bithday, HYLT and WYWF. All of them sound old. I'm especially sad for Somi because she has a lot of potencial. I am in the process of making an unpopural opinions video and I believe two points will be targeted towards him. It's annoying how one person is holding down these idols. I want to like them but this musical stagnation got really old. As you said yourself, in 2016 listening to BP was something fun, especially for a young girl in high school who had terrible self confidence issues. As time passed I have grown as a person, finished high school. I am not the same person and I like different things. While I matured, BP's music didn't. It's the same old Teddy formula. I think BP's music has an experation date. You can't stay the same for 7 years. I believe it's gonna be their last comeback with this formula or they will fall off. We can see that the market is changing. It''s no longer 2016. We have Everglow, Mamamoo, G-Idle, Itzy, Twice, aPink and many more other groups who are doing their own spin on the girl crush concept. People don't need to wait more than a year to get a badass song anymore. Not only it's a time, but also a quality issue. The groups that I stated before are more diverse and not as repetetive. If YG won't re-envent BP's style their place will be taken by someone else. It's just a mather of time.

Haven't finished the video yet, but I think the thing that let me down the most this comeback was the instrumental. Listen to the instrumental to Boombayah, PWF or AIIYL, then come back to HYLT - there's a noticeable emptiness to it that leaves me feeling unsatisfied. On it's own, it kind of sounds like music for the loading screen for a video game.
That being said, it's not bad. It's a Blackpink song. I can't be too mad at it. 🤷🏾♀️

And apparrntly not the most liked(?) From what i recall, i remember seeing the comeback while yes was cute, it wasn't what "fans expect of blackpink" aka the brand that they can kick butt. It was 50/50 but we fast forward time and everyone loves this song lol. Sort of like with nct 127's touch. That song wasn't loved by many fans at launch yet i have no memory of this because many nct fans i know LOVE this song. Similar with blackpink ya know? Both groups didn't debut with "softer" songs and have an established sounds so doing a 180 for many fans won't work. The difference here us like said in the video, blackpink didn't havw the chance to grow whereas nct did.

Jennie writes and raps, Lisa could choreograph a dance, and Jisoo has so much talent. I hope the next comeback does something new.

Loving the members is so easy and fun, but loving hiatuses never is.
“Why YG has to lie when BP’s tours don’t sell out” this is so real, I saw them in Barcelona and the crowd was *scant* like huge gaps in the crowd and I bought my tickets the week of. It was also barely an hour and a half. So overpriced considering I’ve paid the same high price for three hour concerts. It was just... mishandled
Emilia that’s not really a high bar... like Korea is pretty much the only country doing girl groups anymore except, like, Little Mix. But anyway, I’m more pointing out that they barely have enough songs to fill a set and were trying to fill bigger stadiums in more locations than were warranted. It was so expensive (probably to fuel the “but we made so much money” argument) and was just disappointing.

It's rather whether or not they're worth the time and money- since it is now quite obvious that what we have gotten so far is all we'll ever get. It will come dressed in different clothes and hair colors, but it's still the same. In the meantime trends are going to shift and new groups will arise. How long can BP remain relevant with this formula? I don't really know.

I feel like blackpink is an idea more than a group of artists.(at least that's what yg tries to portray them as) They sell you this facade of badass girls who are moving on from hardships, who wear high fashion and have catchy choruses and gestures. They are marketed as models on their Instagram and in music videos and have reality shows, like blackpink house, in which they have this certain aesthetic (kinda hard to describe) sorta like vogue-is, girly chic) that makes you imagine living their lives. That's part of the reason they have such a mass following.
Yep. Badass, pretty and rich girls. It's kind of an idealistic vision young girls have for themselves. They are portrayed more as models rather than artists. It just feels like Yg's capitalistic agenda and using the girls to milk as much money as they can.
The company caters the fandom with so less content that the fandom will automatically like it without thinking.
There was no experimenting with concepts, choreography and it got really disappointing.

the girls are sweet, and talented individuals. When given the right stage and new experience their performances shine (Coachella). But the concept of them is basically a marketing vehicle. YG is selling the edgy popular girl image to people, and people who want that are going to gravitate towards that. It makes them great as influencers, but as proper artists (or just musicians) it feels empty. Some of my favorite bp moments are lisa's dance covers on her free time or the few instances we can see rose in the practice room singing and playing the guitar comfortably.

I agree, and I do get that the song does grow on people after awhile, so maybe I'm the only one that still thinks that the song seems empty to me. I just can't seem to accept this song at all. I watched it three times, and I still feel nothing. I don't hate the group, I think they deserve all the love in the world, and they deserve way better, but I just lost touch and feeling towards this song and their other songs.

Their rebellious nature may keep them out of the top three & behind Red Velvet, but no group has shown more growth, both collectively & individually, than Mamamoo. Three of the four members are among the very best vocalists in K-Pop & Moon Byul has much improved vocals, dance skills & stage presence, while becoming a top rapper too. All could have successful solo careers if they wanted.
Exactly, Mamamoo has always felt as four soloist coming together, but without outshining each other. They could all go solo if they wanted to, they are such incredible performers and singers. And they had all of that since debut and they have only continued to grow as artists.
@Arielle Louise Baradi I'm not sure if I can actually explain it but if you compare their older releases (which had a really strong classy vibe) to their newer ones (which are more on that pop side) you can clearly see their growth but not only in their music but also in their overall stage presence and their confidence they seemed a bit awkward at first but by now all of them are really inspiring and confident women (at least out of my perspective)
So I do think that they grew really much from their debut days to now and will probably keep on doing so

The number of points I agree with is unreal. I totally agree with how many other kpop groups who debuted around the same time as Blackpink, have matured, grown their style and concepts, unlike blackpink who have been stuck doing the same thing for the past 5 years. They're over halfway a KPOP group's lifespan, and unless they decide to renew their contracts, we'll be sitting after their disbandment with most if not all of their lifespan doing the same thing. A great example of a kpop group growing over the years is Twice. For their debut we had Ooh-Ah, and soon got songs like cheer up, likey, etc. These songs were fun, catchy, and captured the eyes of many young kpop fans with the cute style and melody. As these fans grew older so did their concept. Twice began exploring new concepts with Fancy, Feel Special, and More and More. They developed a more mature concept which were great for the fans since they had also matured ever since debut. You can also take a look at Itzy, who is starting with a girl crush concept, giving great empowering messages which really capture the attention of young audiences. In the future, I can totally see Itzy developing into a more mature or more suitable concept for their audience as they age as a group along with their audience.

Interesting how whenever the bp members do covers and different dances, you see how they opt for more interesting songs/dances that match their growth, but hylt doesn't do that. Like rose going for those slow asmr like songs, jennie going for super classical songs, lisa is dancing in a more artistic style rather than sharp and strong. jisoo hasn't done anything yet unfortunately but i still have hope. Also, the way jennie's voice sounds kinda theatrical in the tokyo dome concert is everything. they changed their voices to make the songs more interesting

I’ve been distancing myself from the BP fandom since the release of Ice Cream. Not only was the song terrible, but the fans were so toxic that they spammed the comments of the MV with the same comment to stop criticism from ever being seen. That is just keeping yourself in denial and forcing uniformity into the fanbase by pretending that everyone likes it. And not to mention the fact that the fans are so starved for new content that they will drool over anything, regardless of its quality.

I've seen a lot of fans use the argument "it's just a pre-release" when trying to defend the song from people saying that the song is bad/underwhelming. That argument really doesn't hold up to me, because personally I think a pre-release should be a song that will get fans excited about the album; the quality should not be affected by its release date. HYLT isn't really getting fans excited for the release in a "wow this song is great so the album must be great too" sense, it's instead making fans hope that the actual comeback will be better than this. Perhaps YG should've picked a different song to release early and build hype with, or they should've forgone a pre-release altogether and worked on the song a bit longer. Maybe YG will see the discourse surrounding this song and go back and improve some of the other songs on the new album to make up for the disappointment this song caused a lot of fans. Though I wouldn't be surprised if the new album and title track are just as formulaic as HYLT and their previous songs.

Their HYLT teaser alone already told me there will be an empty chorus after the beat drop. That's the point you seem to miss from me. There is not enough variety in bp's music.
Other unoriginal kpop groups STILL sound DIFFERENT every new comeback. Bp's music has not changed after 4 years, that's the point, the only two songs that sound different are Stay and Whistle. What's wrong with having just as many of those types of songs as their usual hype songs?

Music is subjective yes, but anyone with a brain can see how formulaic some artists are. Same way you feel entitled to listen to formulaic music is the same way I feel entitled to expect an artist to sound different every comeback and dip into their formula only once in a while.
Blackpink is heavily criticised because they are getting so much recognition for doing so little, plenty of kpoppers have mentioned this before so I don't get why you think it's a superioriry complex on our part for asking an artist to be innovative

For me HYLT aged like milk. The stages were pretty boring to watch, the choreo is nothing different from what they’ve done in the past. The lyrics were cringey and the extra noises and the end during the dance break were so unnecessary. Something needs to change, the formula won’t work forever.

Lucy May YG marketing. hype around BP was built even before BP formally existed. Jennie was introduced back in 2012, same with lisa and even rose through gd featuring. YG would always announce or release sneak peek videos called “future 2ne1” or “pink punk” and show glimpses of trainees, telling fans they would debut in 2012, which got pushed multiple times until finally BP debuted in 2016. it goes to show, so much of it comes from YG marketing and anticipation building. and I do have to admit, YG was the big 3 company that was really good at creating company stans who would anticipate these groups

For me, I think the reason why Blackpink got so popular, especially in the west, is because in the west their just a Korean version of Little Mix and Fifth Harmony, even if they won't directly say it. Why do you think they didn't accept BTS, because BTS broke the west's boy band norms and that's weird for them, unlike BP, they just followed what's the popular girl band trends and they accepted it.
They can't write their songs and create their own message if they're still on YG, at least BTS in BH can write and produce their own songs, something that has never happened with Blackpink

People in the comment section seem to have trouble distinguishing popularity from success. BP are popular (mostly because they have a lot of charisma and a well crafted image on social media, as well as the fact that the girls themselves are absolute angels!), but they are not successful. Their albums barely reached 300 000 units (which is very good, but a minuscule amount when compared to say, their views on TH-cam.) Speaking of their TH-cam, they have staggering amouts of views, but it's mostly due to the fact that there is so little content and therefore fans can easily stream in bulk (having to wait years also makes them very eager to give the girls more impact). I appreciate Teddy's work, but it lacks diversity, and while having a flavor unique to them is good, rehashing songs and the same concept isn't. It's repetitive and I am starting to get tired of listening to their tracklists. YG is stunting their growth and it boggles my mind that a company so successful could not see this mistake that they are making. Therefore I believe it is deliberate on YG's part. In my opinion, Stay and some of the rap parts are my favorite when it comes to BP, and SURPRISE! these were written by the girls themselves. If they were given the opportunity, I believe BP's music would sound more genuine and less generic or "for the cool kids". As much as I love the girls, I don't believe their dicography is the kind that will be remembered decades from now, and it pains me. It's good for the club (which is not a bad thing in itself), but it doesn't have an impact on you, it doesn't inspire you.

Because they have very little content, so it's easier to stream it. They also have a stagnating fandom overall (teenagers are their target audience, with around 64% of their fandoms being under/around 20), which means these teens are more connected and have more time to stream. Other fandoms see their fans spanning across several generations, most of them being 20 to 40 years old. Therefore they are less likely to spend time streaming, but will buy more albums, endorsed products and merch since they are active adults.
