It is hard to believe how often people in wheelchairs are just treated like we're in the way. My biggest pet peeve, though, are cars that stop, or worse park, right in front if the curb cut-in, ramp, whatever it's called, and I'm sitting there waiting to go up or diwn it, especially when it's raining or cold. This happens a lot at the grocery store.
My biggest ones (I put my full list on Gem's video, and there's over 30): -People deciding to move me without permission or even telling me (my parents are horrible about this, and even a tour guide did it to me once), whether to move me out of their way (that one made me really mad because it was a professional that did it to me from behind without a word, so it also freaked me out as well as made me mad) or to push me because I need them to but they don't make sure I'm ready before they start. -A max of one curb cut on almost every single intersection in my entire town except along the one main street (I can go down curbs backwards right now, but I hope to also learn to go up the giant curbs we have here so that the lack of curb cuts won't be a problem). Or sidewalks that suddenly end. -People passing me and crossing right in front of me, causing me to have to suddenly change course or stop short to avoid hitting them. Or stopping suddenly in front of me on an incline and just stand there - I've had to put my brakes on before just to keep from rolling into them. -My dad is horribly guilty of the leaning one, and it drives me nuts. He also rubs his hands on the handles, which makes his wedding ring scratch them (he scratched up my truck's steering wheel the same way, and I hate it). -Handicap accessible family restrooms that aren't labeled as accessible right next to ones that aren't accessible (I used one and my wheelchair fit perfectly fine, then I tried to use another one later because I couldn't remember which one I had used because they weren't labeled, and I couldn't get the door closed with my wheelchair inside, so I had to use a different one (turns out it was the one I used before). If I'd had my custom wheelchair at the time I would have fit perfectly fine (I'm getting it this summer, though, and I'm super stoked!), but the one I had (loaner standard manual that was quite a bit too big for me) was so long that it didn't fit. -Tiny push rim diameter on standard manuals - I have to wear gloves just to have a big enough surface to be able to grip the rims. I'm planning on either getting chunky push rims or push rim covers, just so I can actually grip them.
Sorry I've been so terrible at replying to comments on my videos the last few months - I'm trying to catch up now so I can then hopefully keep on top of them! Thank you for sharing your pet peeves here - hopefully it might help other people to understand how they should (and shouldn't!) treat someone in a wheelchair. It's horrible when people move you without your permission and feels so scary - sorry to hear it's happened to you as well. Ah yes, a lack of dropped curbs is so frustrating - it's like an obstacle course trying to find the best way around sometimes! It frustrates me too when people just walk or stop in front of you - I don't think they realise how hard it is to stock quickly in a wheelchair (especially on a slope) and how painful it will be for them when we roll into them! I honestly think some people just lean on a wheelchair without even thinking about what they're doing, so hopefully by us talking about it, it will make them realise that it's not something they should be doing. A lack of proper signage is a problem in so many places isn't it, and it's something small that could make a big difference to people. I hope you're able to get some chunkier push rims/covers so that they're easier to grip xxx
Thank you for your comment. I'm so sorry for the late reply - I've been terrible at replying to comments on my videos the last few months with my health being rubbish, but I'm trying to catch up now so I can then hopefully keep on top of them! Thank you so much - sending love back to you both xxx
I would imagine that not being well along with discomfort for long periods of time would most definitely contribute to a person having a lot of things that annoy them . Especially going out and about in public . It’s an endurance exercise sometimes when those things happen to us . Some days I can endure people better than other days . It can be difficult but keep having a sense of humor about it all . Human beings are broken creatures . Lol 😎🇺🇸❤️🕊

Yes definitely, I do think that feeling unwell/in pain can definitely make you less patient at times! But like you say - some days are better than others. And keeping a sense of humour is so important!
@@JennyCole1988 Yeah I have learned to just turn around and wheel away and just carry on with my day or even quickly come up with something comedic that makes them realize I am not down about my wheelchair.
I hate when people decided on parking in handicap parking spots because I have COPD I have congestive heart failure and because of that I cannot walk very far so I understand
Sorry for not replying sooner - I’ve been struggling with my health. Yes it’s very frustrating when people use Disabled parking if they don’t need it isn’t it, or judge people for parking in a space when they do have a badge. Sorry you’ve experienced this too xx
@@JennyCole1988 Do me a favor attempt to get to feeling better I don't even give people the time that day to explain their self if they don't have a placard or a license plate I just called the cops on them and let the cops deal with them I won't because I don't have the health to deal with it and not all disabilities are visible

My biggest pet peeve is when someone is in the handicapped bathroom stall, when there are obviously other stalls available.

MAYBE TRY PRINTING AND GLUEING 'STOP' ROAD TRAFFIC SIGN ON A PING PONG BAT AND HOLD UPRIGHT WHEN NEEDING PEOPLE TO STAND BACK ..OR GO
Omg I hate that when people ask about u when u r right there just sat in your wheelchair and it’s like suddenly u r invisible it’s just rude
Thank you for the video Jenny :-)

I am in a wheelchair as well and about 5 times now an able-bodied person is using the wheelchair toilet to go to the toilet! How damn rude is that?!
It's definitely frustrating, although I won't usually say anything in case they've got an invisible disability that I can't see x

Jenny, assuming what is normally others being respectful, shouldn't be the same as a pet peeve.

Be even better if you show us examples rather that say it
