You should consider doing narratives for video's. Your voice is very calming and simple. I enjoyed the demo. thanks

I am just thinking about getting into HO so I have little layout experience. But I have lived on & near the real railroad my entire life and JIm's results look good!

I believe that in order for the glue to wick through the balast, you need to wet the balast with wet water or alcohol before applying the glue.
If you just use the scenic cement without wetting the ballast first, The glue might firm up the top layer of ballast but not get down to the lower layers of ballast. I have never use scenic cement, I use elmer's white glue diluted to 1/3 or 1/2 strength.

Don't be so harsh, at least he's made this video and it works for him.

I like your method.I have also used the same sand you used as a filler. It saves on ballast and also gives a little accent of realism should some come through.Nice Vid.

You did not paint rail first. Rail stands out , get a dark brown paint and paint sides of rail first.
Did you sand the edges of the cork before you put track down. General comment code 83 looks a lot better. Use lamp back oil in paint thinner and apply on Ballest after it has dried for weathering.

Works for me. Video stays. Of course I am very careful around turnouts. I always make my points hot by soldering a 22 ga wire to the underside of the point near the pivot so I'm not worried about glue or water fouling the contacts. Water and glue will not hurt tturnouts and with the glue diluted 50/50, even if one sticks It is eas to break it loose with a little pressure.

wouldn't adding too much liquids dilute the dried glue? I had that happen before...I would use chalk instead of a wet medium down the middle of the track then spray a dull coat to seal the powdered chalk instead. Less water/liquid the better!

I notice that the steps vary depending if one uses cork or not.

@DieselSmoke92 yea you have to wet it down for the glue to seep in, or the glue will just stay in a clump

What you miss is begining model rr people watch this and think it is the way to do it. It is not. Their are many ways to ballest but this one goes at the bottom of the list. I want people to stay in the hobby and not get frustrated by old ways of doing things that have been put to rest.
What is good for one perple may not, and this case, is not good for anyone else.
Come by and I will be happy to show the best way to do it.
Problem today is too many people hide or code what they say.

It looks good Jim. But how do you get the sides of the rail to look old. They always look shiny and very fake.

Good video Diamond Jim but you neglected to say what the mixture percentages were for the wet water and the glue you used on the ballast after it was layer down

You have too much colour on the ballast.I suggest you one colour ballast from WS.I use medium brown or light grey ballast.Spray with scenic cement on the ballast at once. After ballast did dried...use earth brown colour powder with brush and gentle dirt middle of the tracks. Some slightly on the outerside of tracks too.At least...don´t forget to clean rail off from scenic cement with chemical gasolin or isopropyl alcohol.Done!!!

  • @arthurhouston3

Big no no. Do not put anything wet glue or water any were around Ballest before it is all in place and you have vibrated it, tapped rails with wooden end of paint brush, this is the worst way to Ballest track. You did not spray switch with wd40 first to stop glue from stickin. Please do hobby a favor and remove this video.
