IS QUILTING A DYING CRAFT? Observation + A China story

  • Critique and constructive comments are great - a way to learn and grow. Meanness and snobbery is a way to stifle and discourage. Let us commend, encourage and cheer on the next generation of quilters. Or the craft will die...along with us older quilters. There. I said it.
Join me for Truelove Family stories (which I have many, as a mother of 10 kids), Mothering Autism, with our Maxwell on our many fun car rides, and Free quilting class and sewing lessons! And as in a 'classroom' setting, my tutorials are approximately 1/2 hour+ long....So Join me in my home sewing room, out and about and trying to make all sorts of quilted goodies! Be aware ~ I like to chat and probably repeat myself over and over, (and stutter sometimes), and if this annoys you, then view elsewhere - but, if patient, you hopefully will learn a new method or technique and get an insight into a very large family and their crazy fun:)
And as always: Love From The Trueloves;)

Jean, I was very ill when my mother passed away and was not able to "properly" rehome many of her beautiful and treasured collectibles. I sold items on Facebook Marketplace and ultimately donated the remaining items. My health is fine now and I sometimes feel guilty that I was not able to rehome the items the way I would have liked. But then I see videos like yours today and tell myself that hopefully her cherished collectibles are making someone else as happy as they once made her. And, that makes me feel better. Thanks for sharing and loving that china as much as the original owner probably did.

Longarming should be judged in its own division. Not many can afford a longarm. Your quilts are amazing I love them both. You are such a beautiful voice of inspirition.

When does technique hamper creativity? Perfect is nice but how many of us have that perfect everything technique??? I'm a sometime quilter and enjoy putting quilt together for family or friends, I would never enter it into any show. If a new person puts a quilt into a show they should be KIND

Your observations about a more senior demographic and the need to attract more folk into the craft tie into the comment your viewer left about her pre-teen’s competition entry. These kids need kind encouragement - the draw of the smartphone and social media is so strong. Any kids who are interested in crafting, art, woodworking ANYTHING other than scrolling for hours have got to be celebrated. Not discouraged or made to feel less than. I think of quilt making as a practice, every day we get a slightly straighter ¼ seam, learn something new, share a little knowledge, find a better way to do something. Nobody’s ever made a perfect quilt, not even those fantastic ribbon winners. Sometimes it’s just something nice to aim for. Great video Jean, over the moon that you adopted some beautiful china, if anyone deserves a gorgeous dinner service, it’s you.

I don’t agree with the commenter that quilting is suffering in some way. Fat Quarter Shop, just to name one, sells thousands of yards of fabric each year. Many others do also. There are young designers and young new quilters becoming interested in learning all the time. I think I heard it’s a 5.6 billion dollar a year industry. So cheer up, I think we’re here to stay for a while! The quilt show hosts need to be less greedy, if they want that experience to continue. I do agree that the judge may have caused the pre teen girl to walk away from quilting. That would be terrible! There should be varied levels of judging quilts. Everyday quilts shouldn’t be judged with the show stoppers.
So happy for the acquisition of your “new” old lovely China!

I am so angry along with you and others about that poor child being judged so horribly! I hope this doesn't stop her from continuing to quilt. I believe (without even seeing her quilt) that she did an excellent job on it. At her age, it is wonderful that she found quilting. I agree with everything the other commenters wrote. You are a wonderful quilt maker; I admire your work. You get a first-place ribbon from me for making beautiful quilts and sharing them and your techniques with us. Also, I have to say, you are looking healthier every day, I am so happy for you! Keep up the videos and shares of your stories and family I look forward to every one of your videos.

Dear Jean, I didn't start quilting until I was 76 years old! Guess I'm a late bloomer. I think the expenses definitely hinder younger people from quilting. And many families survive because both husband and wife have full time jobs outside of the home. Just no time to pursue a time consuming hobby.

Hello Jean, I was horrified by the judges comment on the pre teen girl's first quilt. She had the courage and inspiration to do her very first quilt. How dare they put her efforts down! I would encourage her to not buy into the nasty comments from the judges. The same applies to you Jean, who cares if you didn't get a ribbon for your quilts or bury all the threads. You know something Jean, yes, those quilts on the show were excellent works, precisely cut, measure ect ect, but to be quite honest with you, I prefer your quilts out of ALL, especially the embroidered critters quilt. Yours are very personal, warmly cut, sewn and quilted with your smiles. Don't buy into any comments you received, continue to do your excellent work, you are a special teacher favored by any, and don't get tired sharing your family photos, BTW, Haley is the same age as my granddaughter, she's lovely and I think she takes after you Jean. Thank you for sharing what you experienced at the quilt show. You look so much better, I hope you continue to make good progress health wise. Love to you and all the Trueloves. Thelma ❤❤

The china…sometimes you just have to treat yourself, even if it’s something you don’t need it’s going to make you happy and smile.
Quilting…the prices are a problem, but I’m telling you people just need to get off of the cellphones. Nothing is more important to younger people than those phones. Life is passing them by and they have their faces looking down at their phones. It’s truly sad.

Jean, my mind was blown on the Sister Chicks quilting channel. She was showing us the 2024 Emmet, Idaho quilt show. Holy Moly there were some lovely quilts there. The narrator of the channel took us on a tour the way you do at the shows. There were the kinds of things there that I was expecting to see at the Oaks show. If you tune in to get the quilt tour, I feel you will come away as inspired as I was. It was a wow a minute. I sure hope we get to see some shows like this next year. Or maybe you just do a show of all your quilts. We will get the same effect! 😊

Thank you for addressing the aspect of judging. Yes, I too appreciate and admire the quilts that are works of art, they are stunning. However, for me, it's the quilts that are made for snuggling with family or sweet grandchildren, that I am drawn to. Or quilt tops that I find at estate sales or garage sales that are not completed because the quilter either passed or for whatever reason they are unable to finish. I take them home and lovingly finish them in my own time. I hope the pre-teen finds a way to overcome that harsh criticism and not let it stop her from going forward with her newly found craft. Oh, Jean!! I do love 'brown furniture' and I LOVE your new china - it is exquisite. Thank you for sharing your sweet, sweet story and photos too.

When I go to quilt shows, I see many older white women, in my 50's I am one of the youngsters.
But sadly I witnessed a woman in her 30's who was not white being told she probably could not afford the show entry at Quilt Canada, our national show. She was being gate checked by a volunteer, who assumed she would not be interested in the quilts or could afford admission. This was a show that was featuring quilts from another country where the people are not white.
Our guilds, shows, shops need to be welcoming to all. We need to take our craft to schools, intercultural centres, libraries, everywhere people meet.
And we need to embrace all textile arts. I was on a textile tour in Jordan this time last year, the embroidery and weaving arts there are incredible.
Locally bag making is popular and one of my LQS has a huge range of bag making supplies, patterns and classes.
Quilting is an expensive hobby, here in Canada fabric is around $20/m and everything else is expensive. But many of use have extra machines, fabric we will never use, that can be donated to new quilters.
Quilters like Chris English do incredible things with thrifted fabrics.
EPP is accessible for those who cannot afford a sewing machine or have not space for one. Many young people, especially here in BC Canada, live in very small spaces and simply do not have room.

But I just love making them & giving to my Grandchildren & 2 great grands.I want to make them for as long as I can. I'm a widow & have severe Rheumatoid Arthritis. I was blessed that my mom had a huge stash of fabrics & I bought fabric when my 3 sons were young , but I'm just finding time now to do it. No one seems interested in learning how. God Bless you , your quilts a gorgeous!! Keep making them .

Quilting is not dying or more expensive. The expense is marketing, getting money from you (revenue) so they can make a living. Nothing wrong with that except if it keeps one from doing an enjoyable past time because of the expense. Quilt shop ";quality cotton" costs from $13-16 per yard, depending on the designer. High quality cotton thread (the brand that starts with an A and ends in l) is overpriced. Nothing wrong with polyester thread. When you learn of "do's and don't s" in quilting, consider the source, are you being marketed to? Use your common sense and research why the rules. For example, press to the side instead of open seams, was the rule for hand stitching seams, and this would strengthen the seams. Not anymore.
Polyester thread is better and long armers only quilt with polyester thread because of the low lint and effects that can be had. What's wrong with a poly-blend fabric? Longer lasting and more variety. The cotton only purists most likely don't make all their clothing with cotton fabric, cotton thread, and organic fibers. Check the labels. Factory made cotton clothes are sewn with polyester thread. Our fore quilters used what they had, such as flour sacks, feed sacks, old shirts, old underwear, old dresses, sheets, whatever to make quilts and didn't have high quality brand name thread, or batting, often, old flannel, old sheets, old blankets, for batting. Crazy quilts were a mixture of fabric types, from cotton, satin, velvet, wool, silks, and much admired.
I found at Hobby Lobby their Sewology Brand 100% long staple Egyptian cotton thread, large size spool for $1.99, compare to name brands the same to $10-12. I bought 60"x80" fleece blankets at JoAnn's in wonderful designs for $15 on sale. These make wonderful quilt backs, the top is clingy to the fleece, no spraying batting, and minimal pinning. Quilt beautifully into a lightweight warm quilt. Who says you need expensive quilt back fabric or expensive batting or expensive "minky" quilt backs? Make what works for you and your budget.
As to entering juried quilt shows, I don't think the judging is the correctly done. Is the judging for technical? Then it's for professionals. The judging should be on artistic creativity. How you feel when you see it? Is it "Wow" on first sight. Or "it's okay" but look at the technique, the buried threads, quilting pattern, the miters, the organic fabric/thread? Juried art shows are judged on artistic creativity and the beauty of the painting/sculpture, not on how well the quality of the canvas, the stretching technique of the canvas on the frame, how well it was gesso'd, the quality of the paint, the type of brushes, etc. It's judged on how the overall work looks and is interesting to the beholder.
Quilt show judging wouldn't make it in the art world judging. How many gorgeous, creative, artistic quilts have been bypassed, because of minor technical flaws. My advice is to enter your quilts (if you would like to) in none juried quilt exhibitions. I have studied many quilt show entry rules and researched the winners. More often than not (the big shows, not local guilds) the winners are professionals, so you don't stand a chance. But there are shows with non-juried categories besides the juried entries.

I love the story of your china. And, the person selling her grandmother's china knew it was going to a home where it would be loved. And, looking at the pictures, it is. I was a volunteer with the Red Cross, and I ran many shelters. People mourned over the loss of their belongings is quite real. I couldn't bear the thought of losing my photos. You know, the kind you took before cameras. I have thousands of photos of my girls, documenting their lives. You could watch each one, in the photos, who liked sports, who liked music, who was the writer. I kept each parent teacher conference, and each report card. I couldn't imagine missing them, or losing them. Now, picture day, they send home a link to the photographer, you can have them print it, or you can print them using the link...or send it electronically. Then carry it around on your phone. I like holding my photos, but, they're safer on your phone. 😊❤

Jean, I recall how distraught you were when you lost your china; your new set is beautiful. I, too, love brown wood pieces and trim; so many people painting beautiful brown hardwood furniture and trim that farmhouse grey ...makes me shutter! I inherited a Dutch-style hutch & buffet that belonged to a neighbor we called "Grandma Ivah"; she used to retrieve photo albums of her family from behind the buffet door and show me pics of the dresses she made her daughters. The treasured pieces are now in my sewing room and contain fabric & quilting supplies! Perhaps I'll send along a pic one day for Ian's quilt room segment. Wishing you all well.

Nit picking the construction of equally gorgeous quilts must be the way to determine the winner…? I learned, hand quilting, to bury every start and end of each thread. But, this was on a quilt frame, hand quilting. I can hand quilt better and faster than machine quilting. But, I machine apply my binding. My home economics teacher was the judge st the County Fair for many years, she still may be doing it. They literally use a magnifying glass on machine quilting to check how consistent the stitching is. If the machine quilting is done on an automated quilting machine, they are merciless. They look for the tension, color of thread, etc. My clothing that was judged, I let them know it was my own pattern, by mixing and matching pieces from several patterns. I don't know if that mattered or not. But, they checked each hem, made sure I evened out the elastic, if there was any, and kudos for stitching a piece of the top into the back of the pants, and a piece of the pants to the back of the shirt. 😊❤ But, having her as my teacher, I knew what she was going to be looking for.😊

My long arm is mot computerized. When I bought it, that was my choice. I wanted the quilting to be my designs, not a machine. If my quilts were judges beside computerized ones, I’m sure mine would be pushed to the back. Quilts are so personal so when you enter them into a quilt show, you open them and yourself to criticism. I have seen some of these judgings and have seen some I felt were not judged properly.

Jean I fully agree with your comments on quilting and feel we should be encouraging young people instead of putting them off. I'm so glad you got some more beautiful china and the cabinets are so lovely displaying what you love. It's the little things that make us happy isn't it? xx

Oh Jean!!! My heart is so happy that you have a set of china to admire at your want. Jean, it is so beautiful and so very you! My gosh we not only look alike, we both have such a love for china. As soon as I saw China in the title, I had to call to my husband. I often tell him snippets from your lovely stories. What a smile you have given me today. Thank you Jean, Elizabeth

When I was in my late 20's I would go to our ladies at the church once a week to work on hand quilting, only learning how. Yes they pull that knotted thread into the middle of the quilt. I did that. I had a friend help me do a school house quilt by hand. I went to a class you can finish one afternoon. Lol that was a joke, I did not know what I was doing and felt so dumb to go ask the lady teaching. It was a mess. My friend is no longer living and she taught herself to quilt with cardboard things for cutting out. She fixed what I was trying to make and would stop everyday after work and would work on the quilt. She finished it for me and she wanted me to keep for myself, but I gave to my daughter. I thank you so much, you make beautiful quilts and so glad I found you and watch your videos, Jean.

Hello, I just wanted to say that imperfect perfections are what makes a quilt perfect. My perfect imperfections are my personality showing thru. I hope the young lady does not give up on quilting due to the hags that wanted to be so harsh. Shame on them!

You are a bright light in this crazy world. Thank you. So glad u r feeling better. Quilting is my therapy. Perhaps we can introduce it to all the young people dealing with anxiety and depression just like horse therapy or other modalities. They can bring their own flair to the craft.

Jean, I agree that quilting can be expensive but I also know from watching a new company expand wildly during covid that quilting is not a dying art. There are young new quilters and some older ones who like you make quilts to be used and loved and will never be hung on a quilt show wall.

Hi Jean I think it would be great with a quilt show for everyone used quilts homemade quilts (which are so hard to make perfect )
Mine are not perfect and I think the shows should include beginners and makers
We are not perfect 😍 love your family and seeing pictures ❤
I can do without a ribbon the most important is that the person receiving it loves it ❤ today I was first on the bell 🔔

My teacher would never have done that to a teen, even a person in their early 20's. You can tell if it's someone's first try. She would never have been so severe in her judging.😮

Not a dying craft at all.. all hobbies have peaks and valleys ..scrap booking was hot for years then dropped and is now coming back, the amount of knit and crochet enthusiasts under 30 is off the charts.. quilting will never be out, it is just not as affordable as it once was so u find most are within a certain revenue stream that can afford the costs of the hobbie unless a younger has a grammars stash they can it

I have seen videos and articles on quilts that have won and they say that the thread and buried and never cut. also the bindings have to be done a certain way or it won't win. it is a whole different world for the winning quilts I understand. I guess like the tennis world and wimbledon winners. different players then the rest of the world. I am not that good at quilts to win but I love your quilts!! You do a beautiful job!!

The gees bend quilts are from 1700-1800. Those judges would have a hay day on them. They were and are history!!! They diffently were not perfect but they were art.

Love your new china and cabinets and especially the support you get from your lovely husband! I was sorry to hear about the harsh criticism the young girl received from the judge at the quilt show. What a way to discourage her further participation in our wonderful craft. I hope that does not happen. It is funny that I used to be such a perfectionist in so many ways but as I have gotten older (74j I now have decided that “done is better than perfect” and am not so hard on myself. I still use the seam ripper if things are way off, but I can put up with some cut off points or seams that don’t quite match up because once it is quilted it won’t matter. Besides, the people who will get my quilts will never care about those things.

I’m so glad you found the new to you china and cabinets! I was so sad for you when you discovered the loss of your beautiful gifted china!!! I know the love the brothers and sisters showed by giving you and Ian such a beautiful gift meant so much to you. Ian is a wonderful husband to understand your feelings and do what he can to make it better ❤❤❤
The judging thing is a tricky one, there is no justifying those that judged a preteen harshly. We’re encouraged to take counsel well and benefit from it, but harsh criticism is not necessary and makes it hard for a person to take it and improve. I love that you keep your quilting goals in mind and are able to take the critique with grace and decide whether it is appropriate for you. Making quilts to show love for our family and friends and satisfy the need to create is the best goal (in my mind) and one that encourages new quilters to learn. That’s what you do here Jean , and so many greatly appreciate that!!! ❤❤❤

I sure hope that Young lady doesn't give up quilting because of those judges. Quilts are not dying out unless you are entering them in shows. I live in rural Illinois and we stay busy quilting. I love you so much the way you do things Jean, please keep up the good work.
