• My Iraq War experience...
During my service in the ARMY, I was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I was then attached to a Civil Affairs Unit that allowed me to go outside of "the wire" and perform operations on a daily basis that did not just put me in danger, but also gave me a chance to see how the people of Iraq lived, and also see some of the Historical Places scattered around our area of operations.
Around this time, the area around the Babylonian Ruins was no longer under US control and handed back to the Iraqi Government to control. The area was relatively safe and I believe it was Iraqi Police who were in charge of the Security of the site. At the time I filmed this, they were pretty much thinking that the site would be a great tourist attraction someday. The Civil Affairs Unit I was working with took a trip out there to check out the area and see how things were looking. As you can see, we ended up taking an impromptu tour. Ali our interpreter did his best to tell us about the site, plus a little bit of soldier humor thrown in. Enjoy!!!
Wow, it's good to see my city with an old videotape, thank you for this video.
Thank you! I took this video around December 2005. Do you live there now?
@@JangoMike Yes I currently live in Hilla Babylon
Awesome. How is it and how are you? Did they ever open up the site as a museum after all?
@@JangoMike The situation is good and beautiful, I am fine, thank you, bro, yes it entered the World Heritage List and anyone can visit Babylon
This makes my day to here! Thats great to hear! Im so happy for you and your people. I have nothing but love for the people of Iraq!
These simple iraq war videos shot in a old non sophisticated style should be crammed into something and may be sold or archived somewhere i just love them when i find them
My original plan with my footage was to put it al together like a "Skate Video" in thr 90s, with skits and all...but i nevrr got to. So TH-cam seemed like a fitting place to put it in 2007. Glad its getting love now!
when i was a kid i had a neighbor that went to Iraq multiple times, i was 4 at the time. that was when i realized i knew what i wanted to be when i grew up.
i wanted to be like you guys. i joined the army 2 years ago and it has been the best decision of my life. thank you for your service. i hope this comment doesn't make you feel too old XD
Congrats on making it into the Military and fulfilling your childhood dream! I hope you find what you are looking & find success regardless! Save your money and use your benefits for school while you can! Cheers 🤘🎸🎣🎵🎶
P.s. your comments doesnt make me feel old! Im in my Prime 🤣🤣🤣

I was just a kid when all this was going on and remember my parents watching the news and me not understanding any of this.
Yes. There was an entire generation that watched this in real time from home. I would be out on missions all day, then at night in my bunk with internet writing emails to my family and downloading music.
As a civilian that is something I know nothing about and never will. Truly thank you for your service and sacrifice.
It was am honor to serve and i appreciate your comments & watching the video
I hope everyone in that vid made it out ❤
As far as I know mostly everyone I was with made it out. Some went on to more deployments & some like me went home to build our lives. I hope our Iraqi friends are ok tho. They have had to endure some hardships since we left.
2:21 The Tower of Babel was probably just a Ziggurat as there were many in Mesopotamia. The minaret in Samarra is thousands of years after Babylon.
Thank you!
It looks better than most modern architecture found in Britain 😂
You guys have some rad castles tho and Stonehenge right? Id love to see that someday
@@JangoMike i do agree, the cathedrals and castles here are beautiful but they ultimately take inspiration from islamic architecture.
They are there for war but it feels like a tourist visit
At this time, the area was handed back to & secured by the new Iraqi Forces because it is a historical & significant site. Yes, our job was literally to assist them in making this site safe, secure and to be able to allow visitors to come see. Just like a museum. This trip was a follow up to see how its going. No "War" here at the time.
@@JangoMikethat’s insane so you guys basically were doing what the Mexican military does for tourist sites in Mexico just guarding everyone and the site all day long . Seemed like a chill time just for the time being .
@@DbolOnlyGangster At this time, US Forces were no longer guarding the sites. They had been handed over to the New Iraqi Government Security Forces. We would pop in from time to time & check in with them to see if they needed anything.
It’s a reason why ancient Babylon was never rebuilt.
Saddam rebuilt some of it. Poorly....but they tried.
The War of terror era in the 2000's feels just like yesterday.
It really does. Those memories are still fresh in my head
1:36 The original Ishtar Gate is in The Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
I appreciate the wisdom and you taking the time to share.

3500 years ago this was New York, the richest city in the world, this is where Alexander died in 323 BCE when it was still a wonder of the world, the Etemenanki (the "tower of Babel") still standing, which Alexander started to rebuild anew.
It sounds like the people in the area are taking good care of this site still and are doing well..lots of Iraqi citizens post on this video and have positive things to say. Its a historical & special place
Saddam Hussein did a good job preserving this place. He was a dictator, but he did a good job preserving ancient Iraqi history. Unfortunately the Iraqi National Museum was completely looted during the war, some of the oldest artefacts of civilization disappeared for good. @@JangoMike
have read and studied up on this very subject, interesting indeed. ty for the comment @@NorceCodine
Cool to see the soldier using a tactical vest idk how he is gonna reload fast in a battle eith rebal troops though intersting video too

As an Iraqi citizen, I wonder: Were you really kind to our people????
Yes i was.
@@JangoMike Were the people there nice to you??
All of the Every day average Iraqi citizen, family, village etc were all very friendly, welcoming & all around lovelly people. I really enjoyed meeting then ans spending time with them.
@@JangoMike ❤This is very nice to hear this
Helping the Iraqi people is one of my proudest moments in life. I pray for them all the time
Sweet video and holy hell, I did not know that ACU's issued in DCU even existed! Hope everyone made it back.
These soldiers did not expect that they would see the Babylonian civilization even in their dreams
🎥👀💪
@@JangoMike Are you a former soldier with the US Army? How long did you stay in Iraq? There were some soldiers who committed crimes against innocent people, and I am certain that these people in America were nothing but cowards, but they committed these crimes under the power available to them in the American army. Unfortunately, they were not held accountable by the US Department of Defense, and I also believe that they were not held accountable by their colleagues when they They watch them kill people in cold blood.. This is what war is, unfortunately
I am a former Soldier in the US ARMY & i served in the Iraq War. I never committed a war crime, or saw one committed by any units I worked with. There are some cases of soldiers doing it & getting brought to justice for it. That kind of thing is not common or tolerated & is dealt with swiftly.
How was your relationship with the people there???
The People were amazing. Friendly, welcoming and hospitable. They would always invite us in for Tea and to Eat. Lots of big familes, tons of kids running around. Devout to their faith and families. I truly cared for them and did my best to help them during my time there.
Holy iraq
There were some sacred sites out there for sure
Wow I was just a little kid during this I remember dinners where parents talked about and me not understanding any of it
Its been a hot minute....lol
2:36 UCP guy? I will never understand why DCU and Woodland were replaced for THAT.
Yes. They were transitioning uniforms around April of 2004. Since i mobilized thru an IRR processing unit, i got DCU, but the CA guys i was attached to came from somewhere else, they got all new stuff.
Babylon was Headquarters for the I Marine Expeditionary Force from April-August 2003. I lived in the curators building and my Marines in Saddams palace up on the hill which I believe to be the same hill that the tower of babel was located.
Fantastic video. Well done. Semper Fi
Awesome brother! Always good to hear from fellow service members who had a direct connection to this place. Glad you made it home!
que año fue esto? 😗

The begining of civilization
Where the Tigris and Euhprates River meet. Very cool place.
@@JangoMike Indeed. History is a great story to look back on and learn from.
I HATE the helmet in the thumbnail. Wish they stuck with the PASGT.
Did you serve in combat with a PASGT as part of your gear?
@@JangoMike No dude, I just prefer the look of the PASGT. Big and bulky, like a tortoise shell. The ACH sits way too high on the head. Its a dorks' helmet.
There is a reason they phased out the PASGT. The way the flak vest is worn with the front & rear neck attachments during the time frame of the Iraq War was very difficult to shoot from a low or prone position. The PASGT would end up covering your eyes from being pushed up against by thr flak vest and neck protection extensions.
Its not supposed to look "cool". Its supposed to function. I dont want my vision impaired when someone is shooting at me. I served in the Iraq War, this is my video, so take that wisdom how you like. Cheers 🤘🤘🤘🎵🎶
@@DestinyAwaits19 it’s war, not a fashion show!
@@JangoMike I don't care. The PASGT was a better helmet. And that's the bottom line. Fuck high and tight.
As an Iraqi, I am proud of our civilizations 🇮🇶❤️

Taking them on a tour in a war zone with people in body armor with M4 and thinking WTF is going on around here 😂
We were working together with Iraqi Security Forces to maintain security of the site after US Forces handed it back to them. It was mostly safe around this time so we were following up to see how the site is doing & what they need. I thought it would be cool to film the walk thru & have Ali our translator do his little schtick narration. Lol Thanks for watching! 🤘🤘🤘

Ive got a few more vids but im not able to release them yet. I need to remove some copy right naterial on ome because YT blocks it completely. اني من العراق مواليد 2006 الحرب متى انتهى وشنو سويتوا بالعراق؟؟
I left Iraq in April of 2006 for the last time so the "War" for me had ended. As far as US%Government & UN Policy . . . I have no idea. Over time it all became beaurocratic nonsense. I was attached to a Civil Affairs Unit and our job was (in summary) being a liason between the US/UN Forces and the Iraqi people, winning the hearts & minds of the people, helping them as best we can from services, medical, planning, building, infrastructure and most of all, helping them help themselves to take their lives & futures into their own hands.

Been to Babylon there myself in 2005. I took many pictures. I will never forget an IP officer telling thank you for getting rid of Saddam as he was shaking my hand.
What unit were you with?
@@JangoMike I was with a THT out of Kalsu.
I was at Kalsu for a little bit. I was there when they set up that boxing ring and had the "Smoker" One of my guys (Samoan dude) boxed a Marine and it was epic.
@@JangoMike I remember the boxing ring. That went away before 4th ID came in. I spent about 98% of my tour at Kaslu. Better than being at Victory.
I was with a CA Unit so we bounced around Najaf, Karbala, Hilla, Kalsu & Victory
I was in Iraq at the same time. Stationed at FOB Latifah.
Awesome! Glad you made it home! Where was FOB Latifah?
@JangoMike it was south of Baghdad in the heart of the Trangle of Death. Right off Route Jackson in the city of Latifah. We were a mixture of Tanks and Infantry. I was a tank driver doing route clearance.
Thats really cool man! We mostly operated between Najaf, Hillah, Karbala and would go to Baghdad once a month to check in, report and resupply with our Brigade HQ.
When was this clip filmed?
Around Christmas of 2005 is when I filmed this. Its been posted for awhile but has gotten a ton of views lately....lol
