    On the feed types, the differences between the National Rail Enquiries (NRE) and National Rail Enquiries Alternative (NREA) feeds is that the former uses NRE's own API whilst the later uses the open data rail feeds & doesn't have some of the limitations of the direct feed.
    Disclosure: I run & provide the National Rail Enquiries Alternative (NREA) ;-)

      Hi Peter, Interesting, can you tell us more about the limitations of the direct feed?

    • @PeterMountUK
      @PeterMountUK 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@CallingAllStations The main one is the number of requests you can make to them, if you make too many requests to them they will either limit them or start asking for money.
      As I use the raw pushport feed from them I don't have that limitation as the requests from clients (e.g. these boards) come to my severs rather than them so I can handle rate limiting separately - the boards are unlimited.
      As I have the raw data I can also customise the responses so there's filters on what's returned or handle the calling points in a cleaner way.
      At times there are outages & when that happens if I don't have current data then I do sometimes also revert to the timetable (which Darwin updates daily as well), times that's happened is when they deploy a new version (usually around 10pm) every so often.

      @@CallingAllStations You should do a skype interview with Peter, and make a video, so we can learn the history of how and why NREA was set up and how it works.

      @@CallingAllStations Peters fantastic feed also adds additional features like head codes, terminating services, last report and arrived status (probably more but cant think of them off the top of my head)

    Some day (hopefully) I’m going to get one of these and configure it for Ashtead Station in My Home Village of Ashtead, a place I left in 1967 and which I’ve never been able to revisit.
    Ashtead Station holds particular significance to Me because My Father was a Train Guard and passed through Ashtead frequently.

    That's pretty neat. Looks like a company out of the UK was able to successfully create what "NYC Train Sign" tried to do several years ago and just wound up ripping off a whole lot of people. If they offered a way to pull data from the NYC area, I'd line up for one of these. Well executed.

    6:26 why does it say ‘AREA 51’, just after a COVID-19 safety message that you’d find in a station lol.

    Great video.
    Keep this on at night so you know when to tell your date to get out and catch the last train home.

    Think when you did the piece; the TPE service terminating as Morpeth was done ' as a favour' to Northern who weren't running their ECML services. Also at the time, and still to this day, the Liverpool to Edingburgh via Leeds, Huddersfield and Newcastle - which normally calls at Morpeth had been curtained at Newcastle as part of the COVID timetable changes. But yes depeast Yorkshire has a direct link to Morpeth

    TP going past their big stations, Morpeth and Recar now destinations, good for smaller towns.

  • @johncrwarner

    Isn't the Morpeth train service on the Huddersfield settings
    Just the Trans Penine Express service to Newcastle extended
    Aren't they ultimately planning to go to Edinburgh?

  • @Luftschlange

    These look really great indeed. I am strongly considering to get one, but I was wondering whether there is also a way to configure the board directly by connecting to its local IP rather than creating an account online and configuring it from there?

    • @yetanothername1131
      @yetanothername1131 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will always need the internet to get the feed, so i can't see the point of using local IP configuration.

    • @Luftschlange
      @Luftschlange 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but my point is about not needing to create the account. I just like to minimise creating accounts and sharing data with online services where possible, and in this particular instance I don’t see why an online account is necessary for the board to function

    • @raildepartures6069
      @raildepartures6069 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Luftschlange The board firmware it self is very dumb, it just makes data look nice, all the magic happens on our servers so this is why your account is needed. It also gives us full control of the board. If everything lived on the board it self. It would be ripped off within days. Everything also needs to be kept in sync with our database as that's where all your settings and all sorts of other data is stored. So yes technically possible to talk direct, From a architectural / security point of view it needs to be done on out servers :)
