  • World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King is considered to be the GREATEST of the WoW expansions. With a rich storyline, the frozen continent of Northrend, Arthas, Death Knights, dragons and more, Wrath of the Lich King had it all in droves! As a Death Knight fan, of course Nixxiom is a fan of this expansion, and so today he's telling his story of his time playing Wrath, his thoughts on this time period of World of Warcraft, and what his plans are going forward for WotLK: Classic.

WotLK was indeed the pinnacle of WoW. Will I play it? I'll try. But even though the game is the same, the players are not. You can't replicate the true xpac experience.

I played warcraft 2, warcraft III Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne and then I started playing wow during late vanilla, 2-3 months before TBC release. Played the games in that order so I was a massive lore fan and knew everthing about the wow world. I would have played WoW earlier but I was like 12 years old and I had no chance nor money (lol) to get a sub. So for me, TBC and WLK were the only xpacs which I've played 100%. Starting this journey when I was 10 years old with Warcraft 2 and finishing it with WoW WLK was the best thing ever. I felt like the cycle/journey was complete. I think that is the reason for which I have also quit wow back then and never played it hardcore again. My favorite all time characters were Arthas and Illidan and I got to fight them both. What came after WLK had no more meaning to me. I don't think I will play the classic wlk. WLK and that old wow in general was for the late 2004-2010 period. The world has changed and the people are no the same anymore. No bad feelings or anything, I do hope that the re-release will be a hit, but it just won't be for me. As I've said above, my cycle was complete back in 2009 :)

Having a fully leveled paladin exploring Northrend trailing Arthas' movements and being able to play a death knight was the coolest f***ing thing in my life at the time.

Blizzard should canonically kill off the players every 3 or 4 expansions. That way they could avoid all the power creep in the lore where we keep on fighting against bigger and bigger threats. Like in Wrath when the Lich King killed everyone on top of Icecrown, that should have been the 1st canonical player death.

    • @larry4325
      @larry4325 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You'd still keep the character, but you'd go back to being a random adventurer instead of the Champion of Azeroth.
Plus maybe they could put memorials in the capitol cities that play a synopsis of the last few expansions to help keep the story in perspective for newer players.

Because Arthus “saw only darkness” I was pretty sure they were gonna bring him back at some point, because his death did not fit normal or Warcraft lore. I even bet my son that they weren’t done with him yet. I I was really excited when it was hinted that he would come back in shadow lands. I bought the expansion just so that I can see him again, hopefully. When they completely marginalized him and turned him into just a little wisp, telling him to just fade away and be forgotten, I was so angry that I swore I would never touch another blizzard product. I haven’t.

    • @Forty2de

Did you forget about Muradin? Or Stratholme? How was Arthas in any way redeemable?
      He *chose* that path.

    • @TrafalgarWaterDLaw-dl5cm
      @TrafalgarWaterDLaw-dl5cm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Muradin wasnt by choice. When he picked up the blade it demanded "a" soul. Not specifically Muradin. In fsct it claimed Arthas soul instead and just knocked Muradin out.
Arthas thought him dead and ventured to kill that being that threatened him and his people.
Stratholme too was an act of desperation as there was literarry no other way at that time.
They didnt have time to get reinforcements nor block the city. Or in time convince the townsfolk that they will turn into grotesque monsters that will eat each other. As very shortly after he does his purge you already get overun by undead.
Its dark and violent but thats the point of Arthas. He does love his people and tries to do what was right by all means nessesary hence pre Frostmourme he was more of a hot headed Anti-hero that by losing his soul and falling for his hatred for Mal'ganis lost his soul and became extremely cold, grey skinned and a pseudo Death Knight.
When merging with Ner'zhul this dark Arthas then dominated his wanna be puppet master and went on as Lich King.
After the sword breaks and the blue hue is lifted he suddenly gestures and speaks very emotionally with his father.
Asking "If its over" indicating he was also getting his soul back as the Sword shattered and thus like Sylvanas later became his old self in his last breath.
What made Arthas so loved is that he wasnt your typical power hungry haha world domination/destruction villan. But a fallen prince thst was played by mastermind demons. That like satan in the Religious texts used his own ambitions and feelings to get him right where they wanted him.
So its possible that like Garrosh the fact he did bad things with good intentions means he too would end in Revendreth.
Zul'jin is there too for some reason thou, and all he did was fight for his peoples lands against cruel conquerors who build their city ontop of their holy temples.

It really was the best expansion, it had the most players, the peak of 12 million right before Cataclysm ruined it. It had the most patches, the most dungeons, battlegrounds, raids, the best talent system, the most spells, I never felt bored with it, I stayed subbed through the entire 3 years. When I wasn't in Halls of Reflection the hardest dungeon at the time, I was jousting at the Argent Tournament and there was some pretty good rewards there, epic level weapons and mounts. That was the most satisfied I've ever felt playing WoW, no other expansion comes close.

I entered Outland as a Hunter among an army of Death Knights, and enjoyed some of the hilarious group compositions. I was in the first group of people to play WotLK at Blizzcon (I skipped opening ceremony when I saw the flyers lol). Was about 16, my Dad brought me. It was such an awesome experience, and really was a core father son memory (my Dad met Mark here, and had no idea who he was long story). Giant murlocs on the ship, seeing the achievement system, and being allowed to play for over an hour made me so happy. This expansion was the sweet spot of modern improvements on the game, while keeping the oldstyle feeling of WoW. I cant wait to be diving into it again when it re-releases.

WotLK was the best expansion in my opinion, too. It just felt epic and meaningful in ways other expansions haven't. Like you, I started WoW not having played WCIII, but I picked it up soon before TBC launched because I wanted to know more about Illidan and Kael'thas. When WotLK was announced, I was super hyped to explore the other half of WCIII's plot. And I wasn't disappointed. The scale of the story, the player's direct involvement with progressing across the zone toward Icecrown Citadel, the music, the flashback quests to play AS Arthas, the new lore with the vrykul and tuskarr, the dragon stuff, the Titan stuff...it was just a smorgasbord of everything I love about the Warcraft universe. WotLK was also a crossroads for me, as the guild I had raided with since the launch of the original ZG in vanilla fell apart, and the guild I ended up in after the dust settled was the guild I stayed with until late BFA. So many good memories of that era.

It's crazy how much of the first part of this experience was like my own. I had been playing WoW since its launch, but I had struggled to find a guild and get into much raiding aside from Karazhan and ZA. I was determined to go all the way in WotLK, because I loved Arthas and I wanted to see how his arch that begain in Warcraft III would end. I stuck with it and learned to really play the game--not just my class, but also how to play well with others, which is something I struggled with. By the beginning of Cataclysm I had finished farming my shadowfrost shards and obtained Shadowmourne, my ultimate goal.
I never reached those heights again, and I know it won't be the same in WotLK Classic, but I think just being back in some version of that expansion will bring my memories to life again in a big way and I can't wait for it. There will always be one true king of WoW, and for me that is Wrath of the Lich King.

During lockdown I learned about your channel from my wife who is a longtime WoW player. She tried countless times to get me interested in the game, even helped me make a character. I tried but only had patience for about one evening. (I think it became clear during the quest thingy where you had to collect fucking pig noses...) I have never been a MMO guy. I prefer a more standard JRPG or horror/sci-fi single player type of game. Also, I'm one of those rare nerds that really dislikes LOTR and similar, Western style magical fantasy "Elves and Wizards and Orcs, Oh my!" type stories. She did manage to turn me onto the comedy side of the WoW fandom though. Your videos especially and others like Pint and Asmongold (I mostly enjoyed all the inside jokes and events he did with his chat) inadvertently led to me knowing way more WoW lore than I ever intended. Now, with Wrath classic coming out, I see that you feel as excited about it as my wife. Oddly enough, I'm kind of stoked for you guys, mainly to see all the content you creators put out once it releases. Anyway, sorry for the length of this, Adderall is a hell of a drug. Thanks for all the great laughs and content. I'll be here cheering you on from the sidelines as you guys get all the DPS points(?), do all the, "tank and spank raids," and ninja everyone's loot! Arthas may have done nothing wrong, but what he did right, was touch all our hearts. 😂 Peace!

Joined at the start of BC, leveled up some toons and did BGs at max level. Since I spent a lot of time trying every class to see what I liked, I was woefully behind for BC raids... and when I found out and just how much I had to do to be able to raid, I decided to stick to PvP. So it was with the launch of Wrath that I decided I wanted to push for raiding... I could get in on the ground floor this time. And man, was it sooo much easier to get into. This made a huge difference on my server and raiding guilds started popping up everywhere. It was nice to have less of a barrier to entry and a nice starting point to dip your toes in.

The first RTS I played on LAN was Warcraft 1. The first game that got me into Warcraft lore was Warcraft 2. The first videogame story that changed my life was Warcraft 3. And much like you, I fondly remember the first time I ran up the road through Brill and stood before the gates of Lordaeron.
I RP-walked through that bi*h, retracing Arthas' steps and feeling it all come alive around me. The drawbridge, the belltower, the courtyard with the rosepetals, doors to the throneroom, and then... I had chills everywhere as young me took the last steps toward the first throne. Cathing the splatter of blood on the flagstones in the corner of my eye, my heart raced. This was it, HE had been here!
That epic ended when I stood before the last throne, the Frozen Throne, having slogged my way up Icecrown Citadel, and faced the ONE King. Years had passed, and I had come to live through it all, no longer a raging noob overwhelmed by the world, but a grizzled veteran of many campaigns. It was a bitter sweet moment when he fell.
An Karanir Thanador, Arthas. No king rules forever. But man, you will never be forgotten.

I started in BC, and was so noob, that i was trying to fill all tree talent rows, and was a mage throwing fireballs frostbolts and all as combos, frostbolt to slow, then a fireball for damage and dots, while searching for capes with the most armor in them, man, no wonder i was getting destroyed in most pvp encounters i had, so after some time, knowing an expansion was coming was completely new for me, and it was so impressive to me seeing all the new zones, i had stopped playing the game for some time so i didn't see the pre launch events, but jumped in after some months and i loved it, seeing all the new skills, the new mounts, and specially Northrend, man this game is big, and it did take a gigantic time of my life :), and i love it.

Its nice to see a video thats just someone reminiscing about wrath and not bitching about changes. I like how you mentioned talking about the lore with people in game and in person, and even socializing in general. I also started playing in BC and no lifed Wrath. I was 18 and a noob, and to be honest I used the game as a glorified internet chatroom in addition to battlegrounds and world pvp. Wrath and WoW in general was a vital part of the golden age of the internet, when people actually talked and discussed things in forums, early social media, vent and in games. Wrath was in many ways the end of an era, since it was current around when the golden age of the internet ended in 2009. I'm looking forward to the re-rlease since wrath is my second favourite game of all time, but with the changes to the internet and especially social media since then, I'm not expecting the players to be the same as they were in 2008-2010.

I started in wrath. WoW was my first MMO and just the total sense of wonder. I remember a time when the 3 guys i met while leveling on Teldrassil. We went to Auberdine and saw local defense chat blowing up that we were under attack. My 3 new friends and i decided we needed to defend it! There we stood. 4 level 14 night elfs.

Can't get blues with out going into said dungeons. The vicious cycle of Early TBC. Yes I was in several guilds.. and sooner or later they disband sadly leaving the Wife and I to become duo solo players. Nice video Nixx. Good to see back.

I really loved WOTLK! Even though I was only 12 years old and not as fluent in English at the time. I really did not understand what the hell I was doing back then so I never raided in WOTLK unfortuneately, but I hope I will be able to do that this year. If only I still had so much time to play a game as I did back then.... :(

7:40 sounds like what made it such a fantastic time for WoW was largely due to your life situation. You were in school, playing with your friends and seeing wow for the first time. That, mingled with nostalgia leads to the newer expansions not being able to compete with the "glory years".

This is the game/expansion that made me learn english in order to understand the lore, I was amazed at what I saw. at the time I was like 12/13 years old. I've met a guy in game that took the time to teach and explain to me what the quest givers were saying through skype. The guy was in his late 30s, after a while he went offline and was offline for like 11 years, last time I checked. Really amazing what a game can do for a person.

I have fondest memories of wrath as while I did originally start only in classic, at that time I was sharing both my PC and the game account with two brothers. Adding to that mom shouting at us to go to sleep at 8pm, it was hard to play a lot.
It was only in Wotlk where I finally got to play a lot and join the guild and attend every raid. It was a mid-rank guild that did 25 man raids, but we had a special elite squad doing all the achievements for 10-man. And those 10-man raids in wotlk are what made my fondest memories of WoW in general.
Adding to this the fact that I loved the lore surrounding wotlk, it was truly the best time for WoW for me. But with Arthas dying a lot of my lore for wow died as well... or rather, it was truly a proper ending for the storyline I originally fell in love with. (W3 being my first entry into warcraft universe)
Past Wotlk I could never seriously get into Wow lore again and that alone made the following expansions bleak in comparison.

I began playing just about 2 months shy of Cata dropping. So *technically* I played Wrath.
In fact I was so busy with exploring the world and trying out the various options that I didn't even get a chr to max level until WoD. Legion was the first expac I played actual endgame content. I made and played my first DK during Pandaria. (finally had a chr at 55)
Now I have 8 alts at max level, 15 more in the 50-55 range, and my main is a Blood DK.

For me I would say WotLK was my first real crack at WoW. Course I played vanilla and TBC, but that was on mommys and daddy's credit card. WotLK was the first expansion that I was in full control of my account and could play it as much as I wanted. And it was glorious. I remember buying an account that had a level 70 undead warrior on it, because my original account had gotten hacked and all my shite got yoinked. So there I was, leveling an undead warrior across the frozen wastes of Northrend. It was awesome, not only was leveling such genuine fun (much different than my time in vanilla and TBC) but the lore. Holy shit. Cant wait to play this game again

The difference was i was never really into PVP, but i loved the PVE, zones, Lynch King, friends i got from there. Some of those friends i got from WOLTK i still talk to, to this day, and some i have even met IRL. I have always jumped on the game in hopes of getting the same feel i did when i was in Wrath, but sadly, i never got that feel ago, so i hope Classic WOTLK gives me that feel again.

I started wow in 2007, WotLK was wow maxed. The zones were awesome, the quests were fun and the lore was on point. It probably helped that I was in high school and had the time to play, but still. It was the conclusion to the story I loved, filled with all my friends. The characters had emotional weight to them. Blizzard needs to figure what made their team so great at that time and redo it.

I was exactly the same, the noobiest of them all in BC. Only did world PvP and battlegrounds, not even that many dungeons and didn’t do any raids. That changed in WOTLK though, so it was a great time for me. Getting a Netherwing was my fondest memory - i even remember the night Michael Jackson died because it was while I was grinding for the reputation points, finding those eggs. So I blasted out some MJ tunes while grinding

I had just graduated high school and got to play WoW every day. And I did.
My character at the time was my original paladin and by the Light were we overpowered. I remember exploring the zones, running the whole Wrathgate storyline, I actually felt like a hero.
It was when Ulduar and Val’anyr was announced so I decided to make my druid. I never went resto but I found something special as feral. She turned into my main until mid-late Pandaria and she’s still one of my main three characters.
I can’t wait to play Wrath again and make my paladin and druid again. Maybe I’ll make a human version of my Worgen rogue.

I've played on and off throughout the entire history of the game since December 2004. Today, I skimmed my achievements on a whim. Note that I've never played intentionally to complete achievement except for getting flying in those expansions that required it. (I never completed it in WoD)
For what it's worth, my Vanilla achievements are full, and I have majorities of the TBC and Wrath ones but my achievement completion drops off significantly after that with a slight resurgence in Legion.

This is the expansion that did see my worgen hunter come true. He became the marine he is today. He got in pvp and a ended to level 90 becoming the dreaded mob breaker in Battle grounds then I came back to shadolands and survival spec changed for the worst I thought. Now it's my best spec for downing many alone be it in PvP or PvE. I got to fight the good fight for Gilneas and Tilderssil. Sharpened my barbed scyth and used it to jump on the largest of levatating bosses to bury that blade hilt deep into their very core. I became a new brand of fighter actually moving in unexpected ways around harnessing speed ravaging a mob not just maximizing but actually creatively fighting and making the enemy go ballistic disoriented not due to cc but just cos it came unexpectedly out if no where. Real tough top notch players would lose focused and I could bring my team to turn things around. That was exilirating.

I started playing right near the end of Burning Crusade, and so the first full expansion I took part in was Wrath. To this day it remains my favorite expansion; I love the continent of Northrend, I love the arctic aesthetic, the story, everything. I'm a bit of a casual player, to be honest, and so the lore and the grind have always been my big to-do, and Wrath allowed me a lot of fun with that. Since then, none of the expansions have really matched Wrath's nostalgia for me, but I do have to say that over the years, Cataclysm has grown on me quite a bit. I know that could be a statement of controversy with some people and it certainly took me a long time to swallow the changes that were made with it, but now if I had to choose an expansion with any kind of ability to compete with Wrath, it'd be Cataclysm. Messing around with my troll shaman, just goin' about doin' my business, seeing the new zones. I love it nowadays. Anywho...

  • @malsirian0880

I think it’s awesome you got into the lore and story the world is based on. That’s the whole reason these games exist, to live and experience a virtual world, to become immersed in another world. Which is exactly why (I think) the mmo genre has been declining, they aren’t as much a virtual world as they are an online game.
WotLK was cool but it was also the beginning of the end for WoW. The challenge was reduced, and the experience became less like existing in a virtual world and more about gear attainment. Tbf, WoW was never all that hard but WotLK took convenience and the trivialization to a new level.

I played Hunter and DK back in the day and I lived in Sholzar Basin, hunting for that elusive Loque'Nahak spirit beast, it took me months, but I got it. later on, I set out to catch all of the rare spirit beasts like some Pokemon freak, if you get that reference. This was back in MoP or something. Cata brought a few more. but to this day, my hunter still has it and it will continue to have it, forever until the servers shut down. DK was my first tank, I tanked Vault of something something often, the one in the PvP zone.
to this day, I think Wrath has 2 of the coolest cinematics in WoW, the Wrath gate and of course, the death of the Lich King scene.
it's called Invincible, not Invisible **facepalm** and it was Arthas's horse, he called it that.
