I can't imagine having to go fetch water and carry it up to the house all the time. Plus back in the day they didn't have things like washing machines or even indoor plumbing, so they had to wash all their clothes by hand in basins as well as bathe that way. Things have come a long way in terms of quality of life. There's a lot to be thankful these days if you really think about it.

I could sit and listen to them all day! I was a couple of generations away from the hard life they had but I heard lots of good stories about the old ways from my parents, grandparents and great grandparents. I think they should be proud of their hard work because it made them strong and gave them independence and a strong work ethic! Kudos to you, Tipper, for such a wonderful interview!

It really pains me to see their generation almost gone. Generation Y and Z have no clue, with exceptions, of course, about sustainability and the hard life. Progress has made us shoppers, not choppers. From hunter-gatherers/agri/hort to Uber and drone delivery. Lord, help us is all I can say. Despite my doom and gloom, it was a joy to step back in time and remember my childhood in the hills of East Tennessee. Thank you, and I always love content.

Just think how much the world has changed with technology and "progress" in the last 10 years. My Mom is 82 and herr world as a child and mine (I'm 46) were two different places. Still yet an all together different place from what kids grow up in now. I can't imagine what people like the Flowers family have seen and done in their lives...what a fount of wisdom they could teach from! So glad you're doing this series so we can learn, too!

I enjoyed this so much! Sounds like stories my family used to tell. My grandmother was born in 1878, and although her 11 children are now all deceased, their way of life was similar. My grandfather had a saw mill and a threshing machine, as well as farming. Most everyone who could afford it and had a little gumption worked several jobs. I'll always be grateful for that hard work ethic they passed along.

Oh my the flood of memories the Flowers sisters sun bonnets unleashed.
My grandmother made and sold sun bonnets and other needlework to supplement her income.
Visiting my grandparents required getting on a boat rather than in a car and all the ladies on the island wore bonnets outside.
This was in the late 1960s to mid 1970s. Reminds me that the tide changes twice a day but small town ( island ) customs and curiosities change slowly...if at all!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane Tipper 😊

This wonderful family the Flowers have so much wisdom from their experiences of growing up without all of the luxuries of electricity, plumbing, grocery stores, etc. They are more humble and grateful than a lot of us who had all the luxuries. They also are much stronger than a lot of us for growing up that way.
I love how they worked and went to church with their neighbors. Quite a few of my neighbors don't even speak English. I tried to communicate with them and it didn't work so well. I just smile and wave now.

Prayers for granny and her continued treatments. I’m glad she’s tolerating them so far. I am a stage three colon cancer survivor. 14 years now. Apropos to nothing, we have a flowers family here in North Carolina near Raleigh. That is a old time moon shining family. Lol they’re kind of infamous. But we have a flowers plantation here that is a huge development. You’ll have to ask them some time politely if their kin to the flowers in Clayton NC.

Terrific interview, a precious family. Hard work does keep one out of trouble. Very sad to see how easy we have it today. Tobacco was still being grown here in northern NC when my boys were growing up. Tobacco paid my husband's college tuition and my boys were able to buy their first trucks, a blessing that they know what hard work is. Looking forward to hearing more from this family.

Great video 😊 I can't wait to see the rest! I just love hearing our elders talk about the past and how different things were back then. I could listen to them all day
