on that key level it is actually SLOWER to ground pound. You lose about a half a second pounding, you can really see the difference when you compare ground pounding to falling in the time it takes to clear rows of empty spaces when two people are playing. It is a similar speed reduction to the crouch jump vs. running full speed in 3dworld.
I note both of those first levels are from Japan. THIS is what happened to a generation that got the lost levels as a main release. ALSO I suspect the SMM creators that preferred the physics and whatnot were forced to move to SMM2 and are having a time garbaging it up.
