      @@blaze1148 Almost, but EMI is actually the correct term here. EMI, or Electromagnetic Interference, refers to the disturbance this device would likely cause to nearby electronics. A rotary spark gap switch generates significant interference, which is exactly what I was pointing out. "EMF" refers to the electromagnetic field itself, which to be clear *is* present here, but isn't the main concern in this context.

      @@Completely_Fluxed I ran into the same issue with my coil, ended up changing from ~30kV ZVS driven flyback to a ~4kV dual mot setup for much cheaper caps. Found some on eBay auction for $30. Definitely not enough to get it tuned well for my primary, but I got some decent arcs out of it. Microwaves ran me $15 each, so definitely worth the change for me. The rotary gap was much harder to get consistent due to relatively low voltage. A voltage doubler would have made it much easier. I have a video of my previous setup and my final coil running if you’re interested.

    You can strongly increase interruption speed. Use two magnets perpendicular spark gap. Сhecked in practice.

    • @Completely_Fluxed
      @Completely_Fluxed  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Good point. Does this help to quench? Can you get close enough to have effect, without arcing to magnets? I will try. I have heard this, but haven't had strong enough magnets. Really want to try.

    • @SieraLeon
      @SieraLeon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Completely_Fluxed Magnetic field breaks arc faster, noticeably faster. You should sharpen the fixed ends and sharpen the rotating shaft. Make the distance not great. On the one hand, a short distance will help achieve faster interruption, on the other hand, it will decrease breakdown voltage. Now take 2 small neodium magnets and set them against each other for attraction. It is necessary to set it so that the distance between the magnets is small and there is a spark gap exactly in the center of this distance. Discharges will occur more often, this will allow you to spin the bar faster. This is unlikely to affect the duration of the rupture front. I don't use spark gap for the tesla coil at all, only FETs. The key of two back-to-back included works very well. Read about AC mosfet key.
      Fot these you need 16 magnets. Be careful not to spark the discharges on the magnets. Try varying distances.

      @@azekia basically if you need a *lot* of voltage and/or current to some degree to be pulsed quickly, this is how you do it without breaking the bank. it's noisy as hell (both electromagnetically and audibly) but it works. one place you can find these is in tesla coils as this kind of circuit is great for firing the primary (high current low(er) voltage side). the trick is turning your circuit to be able to charge in the time between pulses. since you can adjust how much voltage is needed to hop between the rod and the bolts, you can set your minimum voltage by just adjusting that gap. It's surprisingly consistent if your humidity isn't acting up.
      I'm guessing how these work is the rod is just in the middle of the hub of the rotor, and the spark is actually going from one bolt, across the rod to the other. that's a hell of a lot easier than engineering something that can handle current and voltage, and spin while not destroying itself.
