  • This video, created by combining images taken at different scales, starts with a wide-angle view of the Orion Constellation and zooms in towards the heart of the Orion Nebula, above which the Running Man Nebula can be seen. As the zoom continues, the stars of the Orion Trapezium Cluster become distinguishable from one another.
For the best viewing experience, the highest available resolution is recommended.
The first two images seen during this zoom sequence (the wide-angle view and the image of the Orion Nebula) were created by me, while the final image shown (the Orion Trapezium Cluster) is owned by ESO. Here is the original description shared by ESO:
"This photo shows a colour composite mosaic image of the central part of the Orion Nebula, based on 81 images obtained with the infrared multi-mode ISAAC instrument on the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) at the Paranal Observatory. The famous Trapezium stars are seen near the centre and the photo also shows the associated cluster of about 1,000 stars, approximately one million years old."
You can access the image owned by ESO from this link: www.eso.org/public/images/eso...
The image is also available on Mark McCaughrean's profile: www.flickr.com/photos/markmcc...

Pretty darn cool. I've managed to split E and F (Trapezium is A, B, C, D) on a crystal clear and cold winter night with an 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain. Orion is one of my favorite spots in the night sky.

Nice one! I'm way beyond just resolving them with my DSLR, which has an image scale of 4.4 arcseconds per pixel.
