Not sure if you noticed, but while Luke is being tempted by the dark side, he is wearing all black. This is my favourite Star Wars movie and one of the best endings ever. I love that Luke doesn't defeat the Emperor by swinging his lightsaber around, he defeats him by not giving up on his father. That's so powerful. Also, I really liked seeing the despecialized edition, because in the newer editions they added in a really melodramatic "NOOOOOO!" from Vader when he throws the Emperor down the well that spoils the moment for me.

  • @brysonkilborn6404

    A couple points:
    - One of the reasons Yoda explicitly confirms Darth Vader as Luke's father was Lucas had noticed that many didn't seem to believe it. Even James Earl Jones when he read the line immediately thought "He's lying!" Because, of course, bad guys lie.
    - There is a deleted scene of Luke on Tattooine building his new lightsaber in Ben's adode. He's in shadows and hooded and acts in a bit of a sinister fashion, making you wonder if he's turned to the dark side.
    - You can see the literal progression of special FX throughout the three movies. The battle of Endor sequence was MIND-BLOWING at the time, and it holds up.

Beautiful reaction. You caught on to much of the best parts of this episode, including Luke’s penultimate moment of looking at his hand and realizing that this path of anger would lead to him becoming his father. Victory for Luke was so so different from most of the 80’s “action heroes” and hi who usually won through violence. Luke beating Vader down was actually the moment he was closest to losing because he was closest to falling to the Dark Side. His victory is actually the moment he throws his light saber away and refuses to give in to his own anger. It was a unique way for a hero to win the day that felt special when I was a kid. I was surrounded by Stallone’s and Schwarzenegger’s who always blew up the bad guys. Luke just stops hope, breaths, and stands up to the villain and for what he believes in. Powerful. Good job as alwais

The significance of Luke's reaction to Vader's mechanical hand was directly tied to the vision he had of Vader into the cave when training with Yoda. In the cave Luke saw himself under the mask, and when he cut off his hand and made the connection with his own hand, he saw again his future self if he followed his father to the dark side. That gave him the perspective to resist and be true to himself and his training, once and for becoming a true Jedi.

  • @rustincohle2135

Luke's hand was severed by Vader in anger (the Dark Side) and was replaced with a mechanical hand. Vader's hands were also severed and replaced by mechanical ones and Luke proceeded to cut one of them off while in a rage (the Dark Side). In that moment, Luke realized that he proved the Emperor's point in how easy it was to be seduced by the Dark Side, and that Luke was on his way to becoming his father and taking his place. It was a very sobering moment for him.

@@Jbluez1 Right, that's why Luke stares at his mechanical hand for like 10 seconds and then it immediately cuts to Vader's now severed mechanical hand. Luke was metaphorically and physically like his father. That moment says so much without speaking literal words. I meant to add that part to my explanation but forgot. It's also why the OT is so much better written and made than future SW movies because it respected the audience's intelligence enough without having to overexplain the meaning of the scenes in dialogue like most modern movies do today.

I love that you were able to get the original theatrical edits. I haven't seen those since I was 10 or 11 when they were on VHS. I'm most familiar with the 1997 Special Editions as that's the set I bought myself as a teenager. Some changes I like, some I really hate, so it was cool to get to revisit some despecialized scenes again. I really think these films are best on a first viewing as a non-specialized edition. Especially as a filmmaker looking back on them. These movies literally were what got me interested in filmmaking so I owe them a lot.

My family went to a preview screening of Return of the Jedi when I was 4 years old. It's my earliest memory of seeing a film in the theater. My mom's favourite story about watching return of the Jedi was me reassuring her not to be scared of Jabba because he's just a puppet.

  • @butterfly17095

I saw the original trilogy when I was 10 (I'm 33 now). My mom got the 20th anniversary VHS box set for her birthday and we watched one a night for 3 nights in a row. I immediately loved them, and I remember sitting next to my mom watching ROTJ at the end panicking when the Emperor is electrocuting Luke, asking her "Is Luke gonna die!!??" cause seriously, Darth Vader lets his son get electrocuted a LONG TIME before he intervenes. I remember being absolutely terrified of the emperor! Loved the ewoks, they're so cute!
As for the scene when Luke cuts off Vader's hand, I think there's a lot to it- like, Luke sees that he's doing just what the emperor wants, also there's the fact that this is clearly not the first time Vader's lost that hand since it's mechanical, plus Luke's just done what his father did to him in the last movie. It's like he sees that it's a cycle of violence and resolves to put an end to it, or at least no longer participate in it.
The prequels get a lot of hate and I do think the original trilogy is better, but I'd be very curious to see you react to the prequels. There's definitely good aspects to them.

A note about Luke's apparel throughout the trilogy... In A New Hope, we see Luke in all white most of the movie. This represents his innocence and humble upbringing when he is catapulted into "a larger world". In The Empire Strikes back, we see him in grey. This is to show his vulnerability and how he could be tempted by the dark side. In Retyrn of the Jedi, he wears all black showing that he is straddling the line between light and dark. After the Emperor is destroyed, Luke's tunic is opened at the top showing a triangle of grey. This represents his moving away from the pull of the darkness. Funny how just a simple choice of wardrobe can tell a story.
