    so...i just got notified from my school that all kids must make a small project of their own and we can choose what we will build...and my thoughts instantly came into planning a wooden engine and omg you got it exactly like i had planned on doing it. i really hope i make a perfect copy of it till the end of the year

    I once had a wooden car. It had a wooden chassis, wooden body, wooden interior, wooden wheels and a wooden engine. Problem is the damn thing just wooden go!

    im a mechanic and that is the best description i have ever seen of how an engine work. keep up the great work, and great wood work very clean.

    This brings back a lot of memories. I was 13 when I rebuilt one of these engines (my dad started me in mechanics at about age 6) out of my dad's 48 Willys Jeep. It had become more of a mosquito repellent than an engine with all the smoke it was blowing out. Got all of the parts for a complete rebuild from J.C. Whitney. :)

      I had a number of people ask for help on how they might get started with automata so I wrote an e-book. It's listed on Amazon.com:
      www.amazon.com/Wood-Automata-Tips-Tricks-Schweim-ebook/dp/B004NEVZ7Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1416771425&sr=1-1&keywords=wood+automata

    Neat setup makes me think of how the briggs mowers are setup, i guess they would have a similar look considering how the piston and valves are done. Just wonder how effecent this set up was vs the over head cam setup with 4 valves.

    someone asked about the disadvantages of flatheads versus overhead valve engines-- flow... basically an overhead valve engine flows the air better into and out of the engine, and more air+fuel into the engine, and more exhaust out faster and easier= more power. In a flathead, the air has to make another 90 degree turn as it comes through the valve, across the deck to the cylinder, and down the cylinder bore on top of the piston. It has to make the same path back out through the exhaust valve. Overhead valves have a much straighter path down past the valve into the cylinder to the piston head, and back out straight up through the exhaust valve. The more times the air changes direction, the more inefficient the engine, or said another way, the straighter the air path, the less resistance to flow, and the more efficient it is. So why build flatheads at all?? Cheaper and easier to build-- less machining, fewer parts, at the cost of some inefficiency. As technology improved to build engines, flatheads were replaced by pushrod overhead valve engines, and eventually overhead camshafts (although there were inline airplane engines in World War 1 that had overhead cams driven by a vertical timing shaft through bevel gears-- highly efficient but very expensive to make)

    Flatheads have good low end tourqe. And have a very complete burn of the fuel. The l134 was replaced with the f head because flatheads run notoriously hot due to the intake and exhaust valves being so close to one another

    can you tell me what the gear ratio is on the camshaft gear is?

    • @kenschweim6159
      @kenschweim6159 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The camshaft has to make two revolutions for each turn of the crankshaft. Therefore the timing gears must provide a 2:1 gear reduction.

      Cam runs at half engine crank rpm unless you build a dual lobe camshaft and run it at 1/4 crank speed ..yes that has been done, unsure why but I surmise it was probably an attempt to remove torsion issues with an aggressive cam profile at high rpm. Not an issue with a Wood motor that can’t actually run.
