I have been doing some metal work and wood work as a hobby for many years and I can really appreciate the design and construction that has gone into this project. By the crank of one handle so many things operate. It must have taken along time to create this very interesting piece of work, WOW 👏
If only more people would put time into make mechanisms like this and less time into video games and such the world would be full of wooden contraptions. You sir are a Genius
I wish my grandfather were still alive to see this. He spent his whole life either running a farm or serving in the Army. When he finally retired for the first time in his life he had nothing to do. I have a feeling he used to break things just to fix them. Something like this would have been right up his alley. Well done sir and hats off to you
The world needs more people like you sir. Everything anymore is bright lights and shiny metal, and if you can't access the internet on it, it's not worth it. I wish I knew how to do things like this to show my nephews.
Amazing work Sir. No metal included shows that ancient civilisation was able to build machines that were capable of many tasks we are now used to with motor powered machines. I really see the work behind ( thinking, drawing and so on), can't really tell you how much I like your work and how much respect I have for you Sir. Congratulations and thank you for sharing.
Ken, you can be/must be very proud of your "Convolution". There are so many things that you did that you did so well that I don't know where to begin but the wooden chain was right up there. Well done, Ken. I'm guessing your grandkids love to play with Convolution. Very impressive!
Greetings from The Netherlands, and deep respect for a clear video of a flawless woodworking project that shows all the great mechanics of the world. You inspire many people, and encourage many creative projects by showing this video to the internet. Thank you Ken, thank you.
Fantastic work, Ken. I've seen a few of the mechanisms in books. Some are new to me (like the clapping hands: that's awesome!) But the way you tied it all together is brilliant. I love it. Bravo Sir! Great craftsmanship. Great execution.
Very impressive. I can't imagine how long it took just to think it up and design it. Never mind to build it. The chain alone is awesome. Then the drive shaft, I could go on and on. People just amaze me and Ken you are surely one of them. Great job thanks for the inspiration and the humbling .
Actually it does something. It shows all common mechanisms used in the world. And you can see how they operate. Your a brilliant man for building this. Thank you.
Great work Ken, I'm a wood worker as well and I know you had a blast making this as it turned your hair white. Lol ...Love it...I hope some young bucks out there will see this and be inspired...I salute you sir...
I planned on having four mechanical activities on one side. I tried a number of different mechanical things searching for those that would be most interesting to watch. I did pre-plan driving them all with a wood chain. I can't remember where I got the clapping hands idea but it allowed an involvement of a number of fun things to get it working. I saw some metal eliptical gears and there were awesome to watch so I had to do it with wood and there was some empty space.
That is a piece of ART that belongs in a museum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder how long it took you to build that? the hardest part seems to be all of the teeth on the gears that spin around must be very precise!!! Excellent
really cool stuff, It's very interesting to see how precisely all the gears are synchronized to work together and at the same time apply their movement to separate applications. Very well done thanks for sharing.
Shades of Rube Goldberg!! Very nicely done. A good source of mechanical movements is Hiscox' "1800 Mechanical Movements and Devices" Available from Lee Valley, though you might find it elsewhere.
this is awesome it does nothing but it facinates the observer and im sure it was a thrill to build and an achievment in heinsight i hope you continue to add to it as the years go on and more mechanisms become available as there is still a lot of space within your convoluted box! may i suggest a helicopter on top with a spinning top next to a bi-plane on a stick that flys in circles with a working propeller...just maybee??? mum I want a box like Kens! lol P.S. nice pointer by the way
@calliopeguy although if you were to drive a new line off of the primary drive it would not put any tension on the chain at all, it would only increase the effort needed to turn the crank to drive the new face. more complicated = awesomer! not that is not awesome enough PS i watched your cpr1 video aswell...nice!!!

Grandpa, I'm so proud of you :) Look at all this people with so many great comments!! It's so wonderful to see other people appreciating your work.

You know what's more awesome than this project? The man who made it. You sir, are a legend!
I'm sorry - this isn't just woodworking. This is a piece of art. You are an artist, and this should be saved for a museum... Keep it up. Great work!

You sir are a jewel of our time! I know computers while you know your hands and how to mold the world. Thank you for sharing.
Amazing. Pure genius. Just bought your book “Wood Automata Tips and Tricks”

Sir, you are a true craftsmen in every sense of the word. Excellent work!
beautiful work Ken !
This guy takes boredom and senselessness to a whole new, awesome level.
Fantastic work, Ken. I've seen a few of the mechanisms in books. Some are new to me (like the clapping hands: that's awesome!)
But the way you tied it all together is brilliant. I love it. Bravo Sir! Great craftsmanship. Great execution.
I have learned from my error. This man has my respect, and I regret ever hesitating to give it.

Whoa, awesome. I love nifty contraptions like these, they're always a joy to look at. :D
Blows my little stoner mind every time.
"it does a whole bunch of things that don't make any sense" I love this guy already.
"And that's my project".
And what an excellent project it is!
Actually it does something. It shows all common mechanisms used in the world. And you can see how they operate. Your a brilliant man for building this. Thank you.
Wow. That is amazing. As an amatuer woodworker, I can truly appreciate your hard work.
You give us all hope for our retirement, what an amazing project!
Leonardo da Vinci would hve been fascinated by this project! Great clean work! I'm amazed!!!
Great work Ken, I'm a wood worker as well and I know you had a blast making this as it turned your hair white. Lol ...Love it...I hope some young bucks out there will see this and be inspired...I salute you sir...

i also wanted to mention that your mechanical engineering skills are very impressive as well.
Ken I tip my hat to you. Fantastic work.
Man, you deserves a Nobel Prize!!!
This is the best thing that makes stuff happen that I've ever seen.
Amazing ! .. I can't imagine how much time that must have taken, I'm in awe of your accomplishment.Good job.
Beautiful. Not easy, but very simple. Simple mechanisms are something every child should learn. Ken, you're the shit! :)
WOW!!! I love it! This is amazing, both in the skill display and its esthetics. Keep it up!
You Sr. are my new inspiration. Wonderful craftsmanship. Congratulations!
This took some serious craftmanship, well done.
Brilliant display of mechanical movements rarely seen today.
That is a piece of ART that belongs in a museum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder how long it took you to build that?
the hardest part seems to be all of the teeth on the gears that spin around must be very precise!!! Excellent
This is truly amazing, maintain your passion for clockworks like this :)
this. man. is. a. Legend :D Its really cool to see something like this made 100% wood. great inspiration for some projects
Wow this is like a perfect way to crash course gear engineering in 4 minutes! I learned so much from looking at this.
the egg-shaped wood-gears amazed me, they actually FUNCTION ^^
really cool stuff, It's very interesting to see how precisely all the gears are synchronized to work together and at the same time apply their movement to separate applications. Very well done thanks for sharing.
this belongs in a children's museum.. ti is awesome.
Very inspiring Ken. Look forward to seeing more creativity from you. Go for it!
Great job. I'm an engineer myself, and I have to say I'm impressed!
well done fellow im a joiner my self and just cant even begin to imagine how fiddley making that was.
32 people passionately hate flannel apparently. This is one of the best videos on TH-cam by far.
Excellent project Ken, thanks for taking the time to show it.
Posted your video one year ago (10th of june). Such a nice piece of art! Thanks a lot! greetings, Manu
Nice work, every school should have one of these to encourage the future engineers
My hats off to you Ken!
Wonderful exhibition of talent and skill. Bravo!
Great job Ken!! You can be very proud of it!
Just here to say you are an awesome person, sir
Hi, I'm a student for chemical engineering. You made me crack open a lot of mech E. books.
Damn. How do you even come up with a vision to build something like this. Absolutely amazing.
Toronto.Canada
Fahad
I guess you built this as a bit of fun and to entertain... Well I certainly was. So thank you and keep it up.
very nice set of mechanism demos ken :) it being an all wood build is even cooler.
He's the voice of the Engineer. Sentry going up!
Excellent work, Ken.
A genius with wood. Beautiful!
This is incredible. Nothing more can be said, really.
Good job Ken. I like your "Convolution" a lot.
Thank you Sir, essential types of mechanisms are collected in a simple excellent video.
very very well made and creative. must have taken a lot of planning. Two thumbs up! lol
Awesome! I would love to be able to make or even own something like this. I am fascinated with wooden toys.
This is just fantastic Ken!
That helped me start my day with a smile! Thanks.
Great job Ken, very cool.
I love it.
lots of work, patience and skils involve..
Very impressive sir. Excellent design and execution.

Extremely impressive. Bravo good sir!
This is super levels of awesome. Thanks for sharing!
This guy was clearly an engineer in his profession.
Wow that chain is very impressive.
@calliopeguy although if you were to drive a new line off of the primary drive it would not put any tension on the chain at all, it would only increase the effort needed to turn the crank to drive the new face. more complicated = awesomer! not that is not awesome enough PS i watched your cpr1 video aswell...nice!!!
awesome. you got a wonderful creation there. i go to my wood shed now.
i am in awe. Genious work here!
