      I know this is just a liiiittle late, but they "deal with" you because they care. Perhaps they didn't quite know what they were getting into when they took this career path, but the good teachers, the ones who do their job amazingly well, will continue to care because despite the hardship they know that their job is rewarding and that it's necessary. I'm not a teacher, so it's possible I'm speaking out the ass, but that's the only reason I can think of to deal with such a stressful and financially unrewarding career. If you're a student who tends to be a bit difficult to deal with, then please thank your teachers for their effort, especially if they go above and beyond the call of duty, like some of mine did when I was in High School.

      mockingjay I don't know if I was the worst student for teachers or the best. I never did any homework (or very rarely, and only for those teachers who really checked them). When homework was checked verbally (teacher asks the questions, people raise their hands to answer) I raised my hand, not because I had done anything in home, but because my edietic memory (I think that's how it's spelled??) had my back and I just remembered from last class.
      The same memory made me get better than average (not saying the best of all, but better than most people) grades, without even reading for the tests (exception being biology, which I sucked at, but was still too lazy piece of doo doo to read).
      That was my primary schools (age 7 -> 15) and my high school (age 16 -> 18). Now I'm studying mathematics in College... My teachers did like me as a person but most likely not as a student..

    "As a teacher, sometimes missing a day of work is more of a hassle than just going..."
    I felt the exact same way as a student. Keep in mind, I wasn't the perfect student, but I have always treated school like a 9 to 5 job (or 8 to 3).
    Outside of studying (occasionally haha), my aim was to cram as much work into the school day as possible. Students and even teachers don't often realize how much time is actually wasted in a given school day. I hardly ever thought about school after the last bell rang, but I busted it during the day. Worked great for me.

      My school is shit (learning wise), I missed 3 weeks due to being really sick and I just had to do 1 hour of catch up at home. I caught up with 3 weeks of work in 1 hour and I understood everything I needed to know and was no longer behind. That means I can get through 1 semester of work and learning in a month instead of 4 months, and that's being nice.

    A few random thoughts.
    What's missing from this is that a teacher's workload is potentially infinite, and practically all-consuming.
    There is *always* something you can that will help someone in your class.
    The only limit is your conscience.
    Should you improve your lesson tomorrow for Billy?
    You really care about Billy because you really care about all the children in all your classes - even, or sometimes *especially*, the disruptive ones).
    Or should you just relax and waste time on the internet?
    For a few years you can and you will improve the lesson for Billy - but it's not sustainable. Eventually without downtime - at Billy's expense don't forget - you will burn out.
    Most teachers I know, especially the younger ones, think about the job pretty much all the time. Wake up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet - you're thinking about work for the reasons given above.
    And for this you will get at best no or token thanks and in a lot of schools you will be treated with contempt, Senior leadership will routinely tell you you're not good enough.
    Politicians will treat you with open public hostility.
    Different teachers obviously have different experiences - but I've seen that basic scenario play out dozens of times.

    • @Supuhstar
      @Supuhstar 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Woody Eckerslyke Sounds remarkably like Grey's rant from HI

    • @Ulkomaalainen
      @Ulkomaalainen 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      +Woody Eckerslyke I never had any problems with colleagues, bosses or public figures about my job - but then you have to start to not take public criticism personal, especially when everybody sees your "short days" and "long holidays", not seeing that being in place isn't everything. Parents sometimes have complaints, sometimes justified but often not IMO, but that's a different story.
      But I found out pretty quickly that caring too much is a double edged sword. Maybe because I didn't start out as a teacher but worked in the banking business (technical organization, not individual client interaction) before: in many jobs you can get away with a grumpy day. You sit in your cubicle and hammer at the keyboard. You go to the workshop and just get things done. This doesn't work if your primary job is interacting with other humans. Even less if you are in a position of power over them so they cannot stop you.
      So relaxing yourself (not physically, you need to do some sports in your spare time) is very, very important. And will help Billy. And will help his classmates.
      Of course this doesn't mean not thinking about Billy at all. But there's only so much you can do on a single afternoon for him. So go the bricks way. "5 minutes for Billy" isn't working as well as "5 minutes getting acquainted with the PC" since you also need inspiration, but take your time when you are relaxed. Take a walk in the park. Let your mind wander while relaxing.

He was so organised that that he could deal with three extended essays on top of all the classes that he had. I did IB and had a three person class but for our Jan mocks he had to mark 15 essays of roughly 800-1000 words each at the same time he had to mark A-level work across two classes as well as keep up with GCSE homework. Want to say thank you for posting this. I'm a high school student who started organizing in similar manner based off of this video. Since then I have a much more manageable schedule and even though it doesn't really help me get through my homework faster it really did help me get into a better groove of going from assignment to assignment. Overall I feel significantly less stressed and deadlines for assignments are nearly as scary to me anymore.
    Thanks a ton!
    VA

    Unless those students are young Grey, who chooses not to do homework because it's too much time and effort for only 10% of the final mark, so he skips homework and reads some books instead.

    • @NextToLastManStandin
      @NextToLastManStandin 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Teacher here. No problem with that calculation. Just learn by whatever means necessary. BUT, we do try pretty hard to make the whole package (including homework) work to the goal of max learning with minimum effort. In a well-arranged class, skipping homework may have a cost that is not worth paying, even for bright sparks who are ready to take those calculated risks, like CGP Grey in the (guessing) 90s. If you can skip my homework and still learn everything you need to, I'm doing it wrong.

    • @NoriMori1992
      @NoriMori1992 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Then most teachers are doing it wrong, because homework provides little to no benefit, especially compared to the amount of stress it causes and time it consumes, and especially if you give too much or if the student is already doing well. I would modify your last sentence to be "If you *can't* skip my homework and still learn everything you need to, I'm doing it wrong." Students already spend 5 hours every weekday at school - forcibly, I might add. If you can't teach them what they need to know using the time that you have them in front of you, someone is doing something wrong (though it's not necessarily you; honestly the whole school system is to blame for this). Giving homework is cheating; you're not allowed to physically keep them in the classroom longer, so you keep them in it psychologically, stealing time you're not entitled to.

      @minioop2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@NoriMori1992 Are you just getting into high school or something? Or at least, at the time that you wrote this? This is completely wrong. Homework is an important part of an education, *any* research will prove that to you. It is not theft, and it is definitely not an unessential aspect of schooling. Reinforcing concepts learned in the classroom through homework is key, especially with certain subjects like math. Hopefully, this comment was written when you were young and just hated homework because it is, admittedly, a huge drag.

    I'm in high school but I still watched this because I enjoy your explanations! I really think it was this year that I realized how much time my teachers put in even OUT OF their work day to get assignments graded/essays read/classes planned. There was one teacher I had in my sophomore year, though, that i REALLY didn't like-because he just didn't seem to care whether or not we understood the curriculum and would read ESPN articles while we did the homework. It was honestly my lowest grade EVER.

    Might be slightly offtopic of this video. But in my opinion, the way public schools treat and handle homework is a waste of the students and the teachers time.
    Assigning homework to a student that already excells in the subject, or part of the subjects, you are assigning them homework in just wastes time the student could use to learn subjects they are less good at.
    Correcting this homework then also wastes the teachers time that could be used for other things like creating interresting lessons or thinking off ways to teach certian students more effectively.
    Instead, giving students a selection of homework like material that covers what ever you are currently teaching in that subject, and then having regular small tests to see which students have, or have not learned what was assigned to them, would be vastly more efficent for the students and the teacher.

    • @seanegan8150
      @seanegan8150 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Homework is a decent way of studying. It's easier to remember something you wrote down rather than something you heard or saw. Of course, homework is useless when there's too much of it, it just becomes boring work that you need to write out and it all just fades away in your brain due to its dullness. A small or moderate amount of it is alright though.

      I think Grey has said that he never once called a parent in his entire teaching career (though I might be misremembering that). Whenever someone asked him to call a parent about something, he just ignored it, on the assumption that if the parent really needed something, they would eventually contact him. Apparently he was right, because as far as I know he didn't get any angry parents on his ass about it.
