The first time I heard this song I was walking back to my car down a street in San Fransisco around 3am. Everything was dead silent.. At first I didn’t know where the sound was coming from.. It kept getting louder, and closer to me until I finally see this hipster kid riding down the street on his bike with a little speaker. I stopped him to ask what song it was.. If I didn’t ask, I probably would have never heard it again. Bless you man, wherever you are. Bless you.
Just a fun story for this of you who still visit this video. I saw the voidz in 2016 and the crowd was shouting "human sadness", Julian replied "kind of a weird thing to shout for..."
Not entirely related, but he came to a free festival that used to take place in México, and when the concert was over everyone was yelling "otra" (another in Spanish) and they all returned to the stage and played Human Sadness. I SCREAMED as loud as I could and got so emotional about it.
I literally force myself not to listen to this song for a long time to experience the moment I listened to this for the first time over and over again.
Perhaps partly because it reminds you that even though you are suffering, so too are others. There is value in not feeling alone, even if it's just a feeling. Don't they say great art comforts the disturbed (and disturbs the comforted)? So too does this song
It's like the guitar is crying, this man really knows what's he doing. Literally everything he does. every fucking single thing. could be magic at this point imo...
It's like everything that was meant to make you go "yEAH" is replaced with notes that make you stay in a constant state of complacency, slowing bringing you up to just slide back down
Its currently 11/06/2024. I just discovered this song last week. 10 years 2 months and 4 days too late on this Masterpiece. But better late than never.
First time watching this video I saw this comment and thought it was decent but definitely not worthy of being the most played song of the year. Here I am 3 months later and this song is probably going to be my most played song of 2020 lmao.
From the moment you discover this song, you suddenly stop listening to other songs in the same way, even the ones you adore and have been listening to for a lifetime. This song has everything that music, in its definition, should make you feel, for me countless and indescribable emotions
It was a pity that they didn't perform the song on that day in Bologna, right 🙂(I am the guy who asked you for the videos you took and I just recognized your profile picture immediately)
@@evanrichter3893 I understand, most of the time i feel like they just sing cause they can sing lol they usually dont have a vibe with the song theyre singing and dont try to portray anything with their voice other than that they can sing pretty lol, Julian is a genius for this
Just saw them play this live in Minneapolis with my dad. People around us were roasting them saying the music sucked and I felt so sad. My dad turned to me and said “they just don’t get it, do they?” I love my dad.
Glad this album got you through it and I wish you and your mom all the best.😃 Btw, isn't it amazing how music can help us through tough times. I bet Julian and the rest of the Voidz would love to know this. I mean, they are all nice guys and I'm sure they'd be thankful they could help you through such a rough time.🙂
Once you discover this masterpiece, you cannot help but listening to it on repeat, while crying, laughing, dancing, feeling melancolic, with new emotions surfacing each time you click on 'repeat'.
I remember hearing this song right after my gf broke up with me, I was so depressed and this song kind of captured that emotion in a glass bottle and helped me out. Now about a year and a half later, I'm all good but when I hear this song I can feel that scary, eery, depressed feelings I had when I first heard it. Makes me feel a bit down but I can't seem to love feeling this depressive entity once more..
+Andrew Andrade I almost feel same... I heard this song during a specific period and I can't explain why when I close my eyes listening to Human Sadness, I can feel exactly like the first time... Whenever I play it !
This song expresses exactly what I’m feeling, the emptiness, the despair, the loss, the rage. I feel like someone finally understands me. And I’m not alone, voiceless, in this pain anymore.
No one is alone. There are far more of us... if only we'd unite. Perhaps we could rid the world of Evil.. but Evil has us all busy with it's new gadgets, propaganda, movies, music... distractions... pick your poison, of course. Where one goes, we go all. It'd be best we all go to it in harmony. Our species may thrive from unity.
My synopsis: the video shows several people who are obviously not happy with their lives and don't know how to fix it, trying everything from drugs to prostitutes, but never truly finding happiness. The white glasses show the blindness we have when we see these people, we think they want to be this way. We can not see what is behind their eyes. They dont understand why they are this way, and may never. That is human sadness. The inevitable realization we dont know who we are here or what we can do to find out who we are.
Me and my gf saw Julian Casablancas + The Voidz live in Portugal last year (2018). They were the last band to perform that night. When they started, half the crowd had left because most of the people were there to listen to hip-hop. The sound was terrible during the whole concert, I guess the sound engineers are not used to mix a real band nowadays, with real instruments... There were around 100 people at the concert at that point. Julian couldn't hear himself on the stage, he left several times. At first, he seemed happy and joked about it, then he got mad as he had to interrupt most of the songs. At the end, some people asked him to play "The Strokes" and they began to play "I'll try anything once". Halfway through, he stopped. Once again, he couldn't hear himself on stage. He left. Some more people left, but the rest of us started asking for this song "Human Sadness". He came back and suddenly the Voidz played this song. It was incredible. The sound became nice. When they finished, Beardo came to me and gave me his guitar pick. I didn't ask for it, but I guess he saw me dancing the whole concert. I'll never forget this concert, I have the pick as a symbol of that day. They were amazing despite all the troubles at the beginning of the gig. Thank you for this concert
Great story! I LIVED vicariously thru it as I read each word. thank u for sharing!!! I love Julian and both his bands Voidz and Strokes. THIS SONG is probably one of my top favorites. Though I relate a whole lot of permanent highschool, 11th dimension and pyramid of bonez.
You´re right! In some parts I feel so much chaos like everything is happening at the same time in a messy and panicky way and then it calms down. I love this song
@@karenpaulina8848 I love how it begins with this hopeless but yet embracing bass and sound, and both guitar and voice are turning more and more desesperate and chaotic until it just all collapses. Very... human(?
honestly human sadness is one of the most complicated and intricate pieces of music ever. It’s bliss and that baseline is orgasmic. Its sound is very strange and sounds like a broken instrument but it’s as if those broken instruments sound better than the real ones and these guys master this sound. It’s sounds broken like and emotion I can’t describe. It’s an masterpiece
@@darkslivery-_-9096 then whats the Edit about? Anyway, I do agree with you about the song being Next Level regarding the composition, the arrangement, etc.
Same here but at first my tears weren’t coming out only drops came out but then later on I just had enough until I exploded and screamed on my pillow and then all tears and sad emotions bursted out
7 years later and I still just marvel at the greatness of this song. I was in a very dark place from 2011-2016. I was spiritually dead inside and full of resentment from stuff I went through and the love of my life dying unexpectedly, in the middle of us being in a huge fight. I had so much regret and self blame and no will to live… I remember when my life finally changed and I broke myself out of that mental prison and found so much inner strength, self love, forgiveness to myself and others, realized I had been living in a victim mentality, and my whole life started going rapidly better in every area. Lost 70 lbs, got off of methadone which I was on for 8 years, got off Xanax, quit drinking. Cut out toxic friends… learned to be fully independent and self sufficient and love myself… That journey to freedom reminds me of the Voidz and The Strokes. I was listening to them like every single day. Julian’s art is powerful and it truly helped me heal. And I’m eternally grateful for it.
More strength to you. There's a channel called turning the tables where this guy gets hia dad to react to a bunch of music. You might like their Strokes reactions. I saw them just this week. Cheers!

This helps me get through my fiancé’s death. Last year he died 2020 on Christmas Eve morning I found him. Laying there. In bed. I think about it everyday. The story of the video was conceived by Casablancas, Warren Fu, and bassist Jake Bercovici and explores several storylines of human sorrow and anguish, portrayed by each member of the band juxtaposed against footage of the band playing as the apocalypse occurs on Earth. The video was inspired by the story of "the band that played on" on the Titanic as the ship sank. The end credits feature the demo of Human Sadness that Casablancas composed for the 2012 short film "The Unseen Beauty", a profile on Casablancas' step-father and artistic mentor Sam Adoquei. The music video took over a year to complete.
For me, I love how this song went from "hmm, that's interesting Julian..." to something I listen to nearly every day. So many powerful emotions packaged into chaotic, fresh sounds.

This song is my all-time favorite. It took me 18 years of listening to the Strokes to finally end up listening to Human Sadness, and then to this full clip version. Listening to it too much kind of takes a toll on me so I try to limit it to 1-2 times a day. There are hundreds of songs I am addicted to, but boy this one is in another league. Fans of The Strokes always end up here, as it looks to me that this is the most quintessential piece Julian ever made. Take a look at the Live versions (like Dublin live) where fans are just crying while he sings it. Thanks Julian, Jake, Alex, Jeramy, Amir, for this masterpiece, work of art. And thanks to all the people here with these comments. I never post comments, but comments here on this song are always a delight. Love you all

Very true. I went to their concert a bit over a year ago and they played this song as their encore. I still look back on the clips and it makes me want to go back in time and relive those moment of pure bliss. The voidz will forever be my favorite band! I hope we do hear more from them. I also love their concert jams.
Today I was in the car with my mom and listening to this song in my earbuds and she tells me "I hate when you play music in your headphones, you could just play it in the car speaker. I have a very eclectic taste in music." so i played it for her and she just sounded so confused, and her face when Julian started singing with all the distortion was hilarious.
@@judd5662 I remember my sister laughed at the glitched loop at Everything in its Right Place by Radiohead during a car trip. Days later, I played it again in a different stereo and she vibed to it. I guess you should try that too.

This song is ineffable. It's the anthem of life, both explaining in the vaguest but most captive terms as well as fully encapsulating the complexities of life's dualities. It's visual display is equally as spectacular. Capturing humans in their rawest form in the struggle and chaotic confusion that is being human. That is exactly why it's both dynamically hopeful and full of despair at once. It's the essence of why we need every range of event, emotion, good, bad, and all spectrums of everything in between. It's what helps us see why life is so fucked up yet still somehow beautiful. Thank you for this song It genuinely is on a much higher level of consciousness.

Violence is clearly a strong theme here. More people should watch this, as it's an excellent commentary on what is going on in the world today. Violence that is only becoming worse through, war, video games that simulate war, television broadcasts that either show war, talk about war, theorize about war, etc. The video shows that this obsession with war impacts our daily lives as well, whether it be the relationships we have with family members and partners, or even the way we view ourselves. With the militarization of our country, comes depression, and it's no surprise that more and more people are diagnosed with it these days. In the middle of all this we have Julian, a frustrated young man who feels powerless to make a difference, though he so desperately wants to. You can imagine these scenes of violence blurring together in his mind, and it all becomes too much to handle. For me the sunglasses played a very significant role in the video. You can look at them as being a commentary on how blind the average person is to the state of the world today, or they could also represent the "frustrated young man" closing himself off from the world. It's probably a little bit of both, but I chose to go with the latter which makes the ending probably my favorite part of the video. We see that the end of the world is imminent, and Julian for the first time seems to become aware of the scene around him, and looks like he's going to take off his sunglasses, but then doesn't. He wants to do something, but feels that there's no light at the end of the tunnel. The image of him sitting there, as the world ends around him is probably also a commentary on depression, as that's what it can feel like. No doubt a grim view of our current world, but a very accurate one, and one that I'm glad is being shown. Just a beautiful work of art.
Jeff Leach Music Why portray us as so helpless and as victims? The point about not letting ourselves be distracted is a good one.. but why not be stronger about that? Why not show what we could be doing instead...
MisterFuturtastic Because I think Julian represents the everyman. We all have periods of confidence and the will to make a positive change in the world, but we also have periods where we feel helpless. These days with social media, fear mongering news, and click bait articles, it can be hard to feel like you stand a chance at making a change. Just imagine yourself sitting in your house, surrounded by all this fear and hate. There will be times when it all becomes too much to handle and you may feel like you're just helplessly sitting there as the world crumbles around you. It's a painful viewpoint, but a realistic one.
I thought these songs will never ever exist again. I just don't know what else to say. It's very deep and political. And not in the traditional way. It's a song that calls for truth and hope. And it's all way back to the escence of making music.
I don't cry easily. I really don't cry at all. Aside from physical pain, I've now cried three times in my life. Julian Casablancas (and The Voidz), I have to buy this album now. I have to. This song my me cry uncontrollably for some reason after the first 60 seconds. Bravo... COME TO AUSTIN TEXAS. LIVE! I MUST HAVE IT LIVE ONE DAY! Casablancas, I will never miss another of your visits to Austin, never EVER again. This much I promise, as for more than . I owe you that much. You've touched my soul as few musicians and artists have. You belong in the hall of the greats, such as Beethoven, Bach, Mozart and Leonardo da Vinci. As a writer and creator, you are a constant source of inspiration, and will be for the rest of my life. And to The Voidz: I didn't know who you were before reading a comment from another follower of Casablancas music, I found this video and while this is the only song from the album I have heard thus far, I can certainly say that Casablancas didn't do it alone. You guys have all made a 32 year old man cry. I'm not really certain yet if they were tears of joy or sadness, but the harmonics were just out of this world. I really hope you guys go far. Like, interstellar distances. You've made a fan for life off just one song. As far as the first 2 plays from beginning to end, I couldn't hear or understand the lyrics. All I heard was the music and the harmony from your instruments and Casablancas digitized voice. My mind. Blown. Thank you for that. For giving me the hope in Humanity. That we are not simply regressing into oblivion. Into the "mainstream void" that is just so vapid. You are on my list of absolute wonders in this world. If an alien civilization touched down and said in plain English, "Why should you be allowed to survive? How are you worthy of life, amidst your chaotic and absolutely horrid destructive nature?" I would give them this song. I would put all of you forth as a beacon of humanity. I beg you, please keep providing us with this beauty you refer to as music. I will buy your albums. I will visit your concerts, be they in auditorium or dive bar. I just might be convinced to purchase random merchandise which I have never done in the past. MUSIC! Don't fade away! Give us more of this love called music. You have something special here. Again, a 32 year old man has cried and is not embarrassed to admit it. SPECIAL. I love you guys. ~Fan for life, off just one song I've now listened to this song countless times, over a dozen. It has made me cry 3 times and I'm speechless. I truly do not thing there are words in the English language that identify this situation or emotion. Love? Perhaps that comes closest. At some point I'm sure I'll watch the video, and then after that begin to understand the lyrics. I'm certain I'll cry again. LOVE.

Not entirely related, but he came to a free festival that used to take place in México, and when the concert was over everyone was yelling "otra" (another in Spanish) and they all returned to the stage and played Human Sadness. I SCREAMED as loud as I could and got so emotional about it.

I was in a very dark place from 2011-2016. I was spiritually dead inside and full of resentment from stuff I went through and the love of my life dying unexpectedly, in the middle of us being in a huge fight. I had so much regret and self blame and no will to live…
I remember when my life finally changed and I broke myself out of that mental prison and found so much inner strength, self love, forgiveness to myself and others, realized I had been living in a victim mentality, and my whole life started going rapidly better in every area. Lost 70 lbs, got off of methadone which I was on for 8 years, got off Xanax, quit drinking. Cut out toxic friends… learned to be fully independent and self sufficient and love myself…

[Intro]
Put money in my hand
And I will do the things you want me to

Vanity overriding wisdom
Usually common sense
Should I delete it
You said you’d read it
You promised you would never ruin it with sequels
I wait for you on and on
[Chorus]
Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field
I will be meeting you there

Wanted you… didn’t ask for nothing
Wait for you on and on
And I don’t need your tie, I don’t need to, tired of saying it

Ahhh, it’s all my fault

I just want to say that it is all my fault
I could never spit it out
I don’t wanna fix your tie
Never want to say we’re sad

He wanted it more than me, I suppose
I was in a rush to wait in a line
Now I hear echoes of my old self
This is not the way to be
All at once
I lost my way
[Verse 5]
Is it not true, the things that we did?
Come here at once and look what they did
Come here shut down and tune in tonight
Learn the words that they teach you without you realizing it
Come here sit down and watch some tv
Mine all mine
Wait your turn
Cross my cross
Slice his hand
Not your son
Not your friend
Not your enemy
I rely on the little things to get me by
Conscious says “I’m ok”
You don’t hear what they say
“He’s not my son, search his home”
Off to war
It’s time to go hide inside
[Verse 6]
Soft skin
Weak chin
Just walk me through it, tell me what to do I’ll do it
Hurry hurry, that’s my baby
Ohh, do what you can
All the time - he waits for me
And now we talk from time to time
Hits you on the head when nobody’s there
Then he says “Come here could you fix my tie?”
It’s never gonna be
To be is not the way to be
Show me where to go don’t get angry so quickly
Fuck depression
[Chorus]
Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field
I will be meeting you there
[Outro]
Understanding is more important than love
If not money will always trump justice
All is lost
I’ll find my way
So I say
To be is not to be
To be is not the way to be
Thank u fr have a fan-fucking-tastic day

Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field
I will be meeting you there
Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field
I will be meeting you there
Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field
I will be meeting you there
[Verse 4]
He wanted it more than me, I suppose
I was in a rush to wait in a line
Now I hear echoes of my old self
This is not the way to be
All at once
I lost my way
[Verse 5]
Is it not true, the things that we did?
Come here at once and look what they did
Come here shut down and tune in tonight
Learn the words that they teach you without you realizing it
Come here sit down and watch some tv
Mine all mine
Wait your turn
Cross my cross
Slice his hand
Not your son
Not your friend
Not your enemy
I rely on the little things to get me by
Conscience says “I’m ok”
You don’t hear what they say
“He’s not my son, search his home”
Off to war
It’s time to go hide inside
[Verse 6]
Soft skin
Weak chin
Just walk me through it, tell me what to do I’ll do it
Hurry hurry, that’s my baby
Ohh, do what you can
All the time - he waits for me
And now we talk from time to time
Hits you on the head when nobody’s there
Then he says “Come here could you fix my tie?”
It’s never gonna be
To be is not the way to be
Show me where to go don’t get angry so quickly
Fuck depression
[Chorus]
Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field
I will be meeting you there
Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field
I will be meeting you there
Beyond all ideas of right and wrong there is a field
I will be meeting you there
[Outro]
Understanding is more important than love
If not money will always trump justice
All is lost
I’ll find my way
So I say
To be is not to be
To be is not the way to be
Gracias maestro

The songs in the last minutes please
This song is ineffable. It's the anthem of life, both explaining in the vaguest but most captive terms as well as fully encapsulating the complexities of life's dualities. It's visual display is equally as spectacular. Capturing humans in their rawest form in the struggle and chaotic confusion that is being human. That is exactly why it's both dynamically hopeful and full of despair at once. It's the essence of why we need every range of event, emotion, good, bad, and all spectrums of everything in between. It's what helps us see why life is so fucked up yet still somehow beautiful. Thank you for this song
It genuinely is on a much higher level of consciousness.

@@IsaacPerez-hp3yc the lyrics were on the description anyhow
I absolutely agree with you. Best said ever! The meaning is really deep and yeah, I wish more people would see it.

~Fan for life, off just one song
I've now listened to this song countless times, over a dozen. LOVE.

This in my opinion is equal to the Bohemian Rhapsody The Queen I mean that makes you feel music as emotional and sensory extension even beyond the rhythm, words or character, have surpassed music as speakers and headphones and have permeated our feelings as flesh and bones ...

Listen The march of the black queen, is better than Bohemian Rhapsody
This is exactly what I feel... I never understood the hype for Bohemian Rhapsody, but what people describe feeling listening to Bohemian is what I feel listening to this masterpiece...such an underated great song
Don'[t get me wrong, I like the strokes and all this stuff more, but the main difference there is that Queen had actual musical talent.

I’ve been in denial about my condition for the longest time having seizures from stress and anxiety for 4 years now, it very confusing, and painful until you come to the realization that the reason for all the pain is yourself and the only way to get help is to reach out for it.
