I like how he begins with life being a game, suffocates us in the history of OUR world, transitions to the drowning of human life, and ends with our accomplishment of space only to restart the 'game' of life for the next species to pick up (whomever or whatever may be.) Beautiful video. Sidenote; that outro is the saddest visual/audio clip I have ever witnessed. So happy in the moment of incredible loneliness. Much like the world around us in our darkest hour. The 11th.
i cannot describe the feeling this song gives me. Julian seems to painfully feel every word until he reaches the emotional climax on the last verse, and then the song ends with a vague sense of hope. this man is truly a living legend, an icon of our times.
I'm not an emotional guy, but after hearing this after a bad week I wept from the feeling it gave me. Never got that from a strokes song so I instantly knew it was special.
The end of the world is your life and how it ends. Different times are coming. I've tested myself, living off the grid and outside in the woods. The end of the world as you know it, see it as a liberation from your invisible prison, wich you call your life. Work is slavery for being stacked up in a fancy looking tower.
The Strokes were oringinally going to change the name of the song but fab told them not to, saying both the Mets and the song evoke “something that you set your heart to and that you love unconditionally but that continues to disappoint you” and that convinced them to keep it.
My best friend died in a tragic motorcycle accident three days ago and this was the last song he asked me to listen to. Now I'm here drowning in tears in every line and thinking that maybe it was his way of saying goodbye, repeating a thousand times, I needed you there, I needed you there but I didn't know, I didn't know😢
that's tragic. i wish you the best, man. let yourself grieve, surround yourself with positive people, and keep up with your health (drink water, that's super easy to forget under stress). i can't do much as a stranger on the internet, but i hope i can provide you with a bit of positive energy. take care of yourself, much love 🙌

2001: Someday they'll miss the good old days, someday... someday. 2020: Gone now are the old times, forgotten(...) Old friends long forgotten, the old ways at the bottom of the ocean.
this is, in my opinion, one of the greatest songs ever written and recorded. To think they wrote it some 10 or 15 years after their "heyday" and then proceeded to win awards for the album. It is just incredibly beautiful and creative and altogether moving.
I'll admit, it is a good song.....but honestly I like 'Soma' more....or 'You only live Once'. To each their own, but I've always preferred catchy songs to emotional ones. I do agree about 'The new abnormal' though.
Agreed. It has this timeless grandiosity that can only be captured once in a long, long time. It makes you feel sad yet optimistic and in awe of having experienced a perfectly flawed existence that you would not change. Great track.
Last Christmas Julian walked into my store and I geeked internally knowing who he was. I helped him get his stuff and he didn’t know I knew it was him. Before he left I let him know “Ode to the Mets got me through my break up so thank you.” He smiled we both laughed he thanked me and he went on his way.
when you realize the stuff you used to imagine in your head when you were a kid and had that thought of "this could be a nice movie" but gave up thinking some adult probably have a better idea going on and when you realize you're the adult who gave up on your dreams then suddenly ode to the mets videoclip is the realistic version of literally all of your dreams and everything you had in mind that you didn't know how to put it out not even the feeling of it. thanks whoever is involved for knowing me better than i know myself.
When this album released, I legitimately thought it was the end for me. I had genuinely thought I wasn’t gonna live to 21. I wanted this to be my last song. Then my mom got back into the Strokes, and that’s when I started the association that this song wasn’t my end, but a beginning. It’s still a struggle but I’m getting better. Stay safe out there.
I personally think that this song, Selfless, and “Why are Sunday’s so depressing?”, are some of the best alternative rock songs I’ve ever heard in my life. That being said, Adults are talking and Brooklyn Bridge are also next level songs too! Incredible album as a whole, one of the best I’ve heard for the alternative rock genre in many years.
I didn't like "Not the same anymore" when I first heard it, but now it's one of the only songs I play on its own. That and Sundays. I still love listening to the whole album but these songs stand out for me as singles.
I feel you. I was trying to recover from a broken heart and after 9 months this song made me transcend all stupid things in life. Kinda travelled back in time and told my past self that everything was gonna be ok. No drugs needed, just music.
@@whothennow24 So many things man... In my country hundreds have died due to typhoons, then millions lost homes, the pandemic caused unemployment, children are struggling with education, poverty, even more deaths due to the virus... 2021 was a rough year. 2022 still is. But I'm glad I'm still alive to listen to The Strokes' new music. Love them a lot. We'll survive.
Its going for "epic song" though so it will always wins in best song battles. Songs like Is This It or the Modern Age are not trying to be magnum opus's but are great in ways that this songs can never measure against. Effortlessly cool. Casual. Ode To The Mets is constructed, crafted, produced... you can feel that it has a lot of thought behind it. Its like a Led Zeppelin song battle between Going To California and Achilles Last Stand. Pointless. Still love it all though
The whole part starting with "Old friends, long forgotten" might for real be the most beautiful vocal performance Jules has ever given. It's in the running. Beautiful and sad and nostalgic all at the same time
Since "The New Abnormal" came out in April, I've probably listened to it 20-30 times. I think this is their most "complete" album so far. I can hear how they have grown musically, thou they still retained their signature sound (like in "Bad Decisions"). I love how they left in Julian's comments made during the recording ("Drums, please, Fab..." "False...break..." etc.). Rick Rubin's influence is clearly felt on this album, but in a sense that he gave the guys courage to experiment, like with "At the Door" (the song has no drums for the first 3 minutes or so, but has some of Julian's best singing ever, with an ominous keyboard hum throughout). Also, making it their first video from the album takes some balls, when they could have gone with much safer "Eternal Summer", which is such a great tune. So great in fact, that even the fade out ending sounds so good, it could have been a hit song all on it's own. For me, it's a mix of waiting so long for their new stuff, and that what they recorded seems to be exactly the music I needed to hear at this stage of my life, that makes this album so good. Also, I'm the same age as them, so I guess that too is one of the reasons the music sounds as if it was custom tailored for me. In case you missed it from reading my comment, I REALLY LOVE THIS ALBUM from start to finish! Now all I have to do is to wait for this pandemic to pass, and then hear them live...(maybe in 2021).
It's like you've read my mind and said all of this before I could. The New Abnormal if my favorite album right now, even though I know the first two are better and feel much more nostalgic when I listen to them. I've listened to The New Abnormal so many times I'm sure that years from now when I play it again, I'll remember of 2020. It's basically the soundtrack for this year in my life.
I completely agree that it feels as if it was “tailor made”, I’m sure it’s the same for all the true fans but the timing of the album and the title makes me think that The Strokes truly have their fingers on the pulse of society or that Julian is simply a genius and the world needs to wake up and realise it. Phenomenal album

You just encapsulated exactly why this song rings so true to me, thank you! This is the melody of my soul and although its a little sad its also so damn beautiful - gives me hope for what is to come
I remember reading in an interview (2010) that Julian Casablancas wanted to write a song for the NY Mets; he eventually got to do it, and as they stated in "5guys talking about things they know nothing about ep. 2" at some point he wanted to name this song just Ode, but Moretti convinced him to keep the word Mets. Julian said he wrote it while waiting for a train after the Mets lost a match, and Morietti pointed out that it alludes to "something that you set your heart to, and that you love unconditionally but that continues to disappoint you".
Oh yeah for sure! It's... it's a little bit strange for the title but still, at least it IS interesting. That is a fixture of lots of Strokes songs/videos. It's pure, simple originality! 😏🎶
That's a pretty good idea, but since they'll still make more music maybe they'll reference this track on their actual last closing song, like Ode to the Strokes or something lol

Lyrically, I consider the climax of the song to be a 'call to arm' for our generation. A truly painful, beautiful and inspirational wake up call to let go of our nostalgic past and collectively navigate our way through this time together.

The last verse is something I wish I was able to write. There's so much in that line that's impossible to express completely. Thank you, Jules and the boys....
The Strokes are so damn introspective on this album. I feel like they've reached into my soul and pulled out some deep emotions I didn't even know existed. You feel like you have to lay down in a quiet room after listening to it.
Tonight I learned an old friend of mine just died. That last bit that goes "Old friends, long forgotten, they all wait at the bottom of the ocean. The only thing that's left is us" hits differently. I can't keep losing people, I don't know if I have it in me to keep going regardless. Take care of your friends, you never know when you're gonna lose them.
i’m sorry for your loss, grief is one of the hardest things to go through as humans. stay strong and keep going, there are still plenty lessons to be learned through all the good and bad! hope things get better for you soon ❣️
I can relate. I just lost one of my closest friend and this comment of yours had me crying a lot. I hope that you're coping well even after all what happened.
This song is about Julian's relationship with his father. His dad died in 2013, shortly after the release of "Comedown Machine," so the material on this album is first stuff Julian would have released with The Strokes since his father's death. His dad was a pretty big deal in the modeling world and likely cast a long shadow. He probably traveled all the time and was not very present while he was home. This is a common story for people (like myself) who grew up rich in NYC. Something that is unique to rich NYC culture is that life does not revolve around children the way it does in the suburbs. Kids like Julian grow up fast and jaded in NYC and they have the freedom of 20 something yuppies when they are 15. It's a bit of a head trip, because on the one hand your parents have given you this amazing life that everyone wants, but on the other hand they are never around and it's pretty clear that spending time with you is not their priority. Julian's early music really captured the thrill and pain of growing up like that, and it's great to see him reflecting back as an older man, and finally getting his Grammy in the process.
Up on his horse, up on his horse Not gonna wake up here anymore Listen one time, it's not the truth It's just a story, I tell to you Easy to say, easy to do But it's not easy, well, maybe for you Hope that you find it, hope that it's good Hope that you read it, think that you should Cuts you some slack as he sits back Sizes you up, plans his attack Ah-da-da Drums please, Fab And I got it all, I got it all Waiting for me down on the street But now you gotta do somethin' special for me I'm gonna say what's on my mind Then I'll walk out, then I'll feel fine Yeah, I'm under his thumb, I'm on his back I will not show my teeth too quick I needed you there, I needed you there But I didn't know, I didn't know Go alone I'll go alone We'll go alone I'll go alone Back from his trip, he's at the door When he gets back, he's on the phone Innocent eye, innocent heart No, it's not wrong, but it's not right Innocent time out on his own Not got gonna do that, I'm out of control I was just bored playin' the guitar Learned all your tricks, wasn't too hard It's the last one now, I can promise you that I'm gonna find out the truth when I get back Gone now are the old times Forgotten, time to hold on the railing The Rubix cube isn't solving for us Old friends, long forgotten The old ways at the bottom Of the ocean now has swallowed The only thing that's left Is us, so pardon the silence That you're hearing is turning Into a deafening, painful, shameful roar

this is literally how i always imagined a music video for this song if it wasn't gonna be the mets losing against the giants. everything flows into place like in the do i wanna know music video but with their own little touch that is... the strokes. everything flows into place and it doesn't stop. just like the song. it just goes on and when you get to the ending... it is just magical.
@@Wiley_CoyoteThe Mets were named the Miracle Mets in 1969 for how they got to the World Series and won after a storybook ending. I get such mixed feelings listening to this song, it's sad and nostalgic but at the same time it has some kinda rage and ambition to it and that makes it beautiful
i now realize that i have never truly lived.. never made such a conection with friends, girlfriends, family, places, times.. this song brings memories to me but are empty im there with my friends but i was never really there, i cant feel any nostalgic, in other words i feel like i have nothing to miss.. and this is really dissapointing
Emptiness may b the point. He has a band called the voids.....being disappointed is a feeling by the way....he wants I to feel what he is feeling. BIG time disappointment, emptiness, alienation, all of it...amongst the most lovely of images!
I usually never comment on TH-cam. But this song.... this song is just amazing. The lyrics, the arrangement, the sentimental "touch", which combines resignation and strength and brings you to tears and smile at the same time... everything is so moving and perfect. This song will stay with me all my life.
I can't find the comment anymore, but once I read here that this song was about loving someone who keeps disappoints you, and I'm really feeling it right now

this is, in my opinion, one of the greatest songs ever written and recorded.
Ironically, I feel like Julian captured this feeling previously on "Human Sadness" by the Voidz. An equally great track.
And to think he wrote this the Mets that lost in 2016 that broke his heart . Us baseball fans everyone knows that feeling and this song is that

U good bro
U got this man. I know how it feels. Give it time. Do what u can do each day. Little steps, little wins, you got this shit. I’m proud of you

Spot on assessment. 👍🏼

I didn't like "Not the same anymore" when I first heard it, but now it's one of the only songs I play on its own. That and Sundays. I still love listening to the whole album but these songs stand out for me as singles.

I think it’s fair enough to say that this is the best song from this band and probably one of the best rock songs of the last decade.
Ode To The Mets is without a doubt, his magnum opus.
I'd say selfless gives ode to the mets a run for its money

Beautiful and sad and nostalgic all at the same time
you have NO idea how long it took me to find this, i've had best stuck in my head for YEARS and i just know found it
Since "The New Abnormal" came out in April, I've probably listened to it 20-30 times.
Ur gay
You cannot be describe that best

R.I.P. Grimace Mets. You were a beautiful dream.💜🧡💙🧡💙💜
Thats pretty much describe the whole song
The pain of being a diehard Mets fan is channeled perfectly into this song.

What an excellent comment
Well put.
thank you for making the song somehow better

Back from his trip, he's at the door
When he gets back, he's on the phone
Innocent eye, innocent heart
No, it's not wrong, but it's not right
Innocent time out on his own
Not got gonna do that, I'm out of control
I was just bored playin' the guitar
Learned all your tricks, wasn't too hard
It's the last one now, I can promise you that
I'm gonna find out the truth when I get back
Gone now are the old times
Forgotten, time to hold on the railing
The Rubix cube isn't solving for us
Old friends, long forgotten
The old ways at the bottom
Of the ocean now has swallowed
The only thing that's left
Is us, so pardon the silence
That you're hearing is turning
Into a deafening, painful, shameful roar
Ll a kk
Thank you so much
I love Julian casablancas ❤️
:DDDD
i love how "Drums please, Fab" is on lyrics
This song is my therapy. I constantly anticipate the “Drums please, Fab” part.
Please bring out merch from that “Ode to the Mets” artwork at the end
Yessssssss
I would buy a "drums please fab" merch
how the hell did they make this masterpiece
I just lold bc I wonder the same
3d animation in timeless zoom out
Don’t thank me just thank the strokes
Lyrics:
Up on his horse, up on his horse
Not gonna wake up here anymore
Listen one time, it's not the truth
It's just a story, I tell to you
Easy to say, easy to do
But it's not easy, well, maybe for you
Hope that you find it, hope that it's good
Hope that you read it, think that you should
Cuts you some slack as he sits back
Sizes you up, plans his attack
Ah-da-da
Drums please, Fab
And I got it all, I got it all
Waiting for me down on the street
But now you gotta do somethin' special for me
I'm gonna say what's on my mind
Then I'll walk out, then I'll feel fine
Yeah, I'm under his thumb, I'm on his back
I will not show my teeth too quick
I needed you there, I needed you there
But I didn't know, I didn't know
Go alone
I'll go alone
We'll go alone
I'll go alone
Back from his trip, he's at the door
When he gets back, he's on the phone
Innocent eye, innocent heart
No, it's not wrong, but it's not right
Innocent time out on his own
Not got gonna do that, I'm out of control
I was just bored playin' the guitar
Learned all your tricks, wasn't too hard
It's the last one now, I can promise you that
I'm gonna find out the truth when I get back
Gone now are the old times
Forgotten, time to hold on the railing
The Rubix cube isn't solving for us
Old friends, long forgotten
The old ways at the bottom
Of the ocean now has swallowed
The only thing that's left

Thank u,
The Strokes.
Naah, I still want to thank you too

No body: ...
Julian: no bigs
I was introduced to this song when my daughter was playing her music in the car. I fell in love with it. Julian's voice is so amazing. I had to find out who belonged to that voice! Now I'm discovering all their other songs. The band is very talented and their music has a great sound.
Your daughter has great taste.
ahahahahahah the lyrics in the description are wrong!
LOL I just realised that 🤣🤣
LMAOOOO
Someone must have been drunk lmaooo
They've just copied the Bad Decisions video description hahaha
nono it's not wrong, it's just the way jules sings it lol
“Into a deafening, shameful, painful ROARRRR”
alex flores I feel you, bro 😪
dis gonna be my funeral song
❤
this is literally how i always imagined a music video for this song if it wasn't gonna be the mets losing against the giants. everything flows into place like in the do i wanna know music video but with their own little touch that is... the strokes. everything flows into place and it doesn't stop. just like the song. it just goes on and when you get to the ending... it is just magical.
Wow
"Drums, please Fab?" Aquí es donde todos lloramos
El paso del tiempo, el dolor, la nostalgia, los viejos tiempos olvidados en el fondo del océano🥺 The Strokes, la mejor banda para mí 🖤
idk why but I cried when I saw the "You gotta believe", "Believe in Miracles" and "Restart" signs
Clearly the song is about a little more than baseball, since Restart changes the meaning of the other phrases somewhat.
@@Wiley_CoyoteThe Mets were named the Miracle Mets in 1969 for how they got to the World Series and won after a storybook ending. You gotta believe or rather Ya gotta believe is a slogan Mets fans have used for decades from that magical run they had in 1968 and 1986 so that answers a little bit of your question or statement.
why is this one of the best songs I’ve heard and I just found it a few days ago 😭 where has this been all my life
@Rip Dingersu have a point but love these type of songs that’s why I’m surprised I didn’t discover it earlier honestly or near it’s release
@@julia-il4yg surely you’ve given the whole album a listen by now?
April 2020, its okay, welcome to the new abnormal train
because it is.
@julia-il4yg because surely you used to listen to the terrible bad bunny xd
One of best bands to ever do it! Thank you for this art 🫡
Revisiting in 2024
2:16 before i read the lyrics i kept hearing "i will not show my teeth to CRAIG"
like screw you craig, you'll never see these pearly whites
I heard that too! I really laughed out loud reading your comment coz i wasn't the only one who misheard "i won't show my teeth to craig" . I can just imagine craig listening to this and going "alright then".
LMAO
Poor craig
YES! That's what I've been hearing!!
Craig lives matter
Live out?
Jajssjjsjs
Jajaja donde lo dijo?
Hermoso recuerdo gracias
I get such mixed feelings listening to this song, it's sad and nostalgic but at the same time it has some kinda rage and ambition to it and that makes it beautiful
I know what you mean 💙
Totally agree! I can hear the solemness of the track but can't help but feel like I should be yelling the lyrics and rocking out
I think the rage is the pain of not having his dad around as a kid. Im pretty sure that's what the song is about
WOW. This is easily on par with their first albums, but the emotional punch is something else. Beautiful!!!
Best song I’ve ever heard- 4:18 to 5:23 made me cry and gave me chills- I just lost my father. Thank you
Hope you are doing well, my friend. My condolences. ❤
Thank you for the kind words, much love
My condolences buddy thats life
And you got the Obito pfp, hope you’re taking it easy buddy
I’m sorry...my thoughts are with you
TODO LO QUE HACE THE STROKES ES ARTE
LOS AMOOOOOOO!!!!!
Todo el álbum es joya
i now realize that i have never truly lived.. never made such a conection with friends, girlfriends, family, places, times.. this song brings memories to me but are empty im there with my friends but i was never really there, i cant feel any nostalgic, in other words i feel like i have nothing to miss.. and this is really dissapointing
Same
god damn it, I feel the same, even if I were to die to in a couple of minutes, I would not be sad, because I never felt anything
Same
Emptiness may b the point. He has a band called the voids.....being disappointed is a feeling by the way....he wants I to feel what he is feeling. BIG time disappointment, emptiness, alienation, all of it...amongst the most lovely of images!
One of the best written songs of all time.
Is this it? This is it
The song of the century.
I usually never comment on TH-cam. But this song.... this song is just amazing. The lyrics, the arrangement, the sentimental "touch", which combines resignation and strength and brings you to tears and smile at the same time... everything is so moving and perfect. This song will stay with me all my life.
Agree 👍
100% agree 👍
Just saw I live a couple weeks ago. Wont ever forget the experience
I agree, it’s one of the few songs I ever commented on
It will become apparent why very soon
The best thing that happened to me in this disgusting year.
Same here
I can't find the comment anymore, but once I read here that this song was about loving someone who keeps disappoints you, and I'm really feeling it right now
The long timeline through centuries is just showing how long we waited for the new abnormal
