Honda Civic (and CR-V) 1.6 iDTEC Diesel Glow Plug Replacement at 125k miles

  • Here is a short video about changing the glow plugs on my 2015 Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC Diesel Tourer, after a PGM-FI fail code was traced back to an open circuit in the glow plug in cylinder 4. The procedure to replace these glow plugs would be pretty much the same on the CR-V diesel of the same age.
    I replaced the original Honda parts with Blue Print equivalents (Blue Print is part of the Febi Bilstein Group). They were cheaper than Honda parts but I did not pick them entirely on the basis of cost. They are slightly different in appearance (mainly a slightly thinner body), but went in fine and have a three-year warranty. We’ll see how long they last; Blue Print parts have served me well in the past. This was a daunting task at first inspection but went pretty smoothly.

      Thanks Andy. I can't really recommend this car enough. It is a few years old now, and some things let it down, such as the lack of LED headlamps on dip beam and the ongoing aggravation of not having Apple Car Play. But, as far as running and driving it goes, it is a great piece of work. Super comfortable, economical, spacious, flexible, versatile, nice to drive and not that common. I have driven all over England and Wales through 2022 and have not been uncomfortable once. I almost bought a well priced, low mileage Tourer this year too, but someone else beat me to it 🙃

      I’m happy enough with mine too, John. The CarPlay can be a pain with connection issues, but I can’t complain about the comfort of the car and the frugality of the idtec engine. I’m much happier with this car than the years of wasting money fixing BMWs.🙄

    Quick question... Have you had your EGR off for a clean? I've been trying to locate mine. I cant find any videos on youtube for this model and after reading up on civic forums there seems to be 2 EGR's a low pressure one and a high pressure one and apart from diagrams I cant think where to start? Definitely not looked for an EGR valve. DPF can be a diesel concern and we are working with a DPF issue on my daughter's 2.2 diesel right now related to the bonnet microswitch (!) but mine has never been an issue. I do a lot of motorway runs.

    Waiting for the update videos! Michelin is the way to go for tyres as far as I am concerned. Would you replace it with a 10th Gen Civic with the same 1.6 IDTEC engine but with ZF automatic gearbox? It would be a bit less practical since it is not an station wagon but I think not too bad since it’s a lift back and the car is roomy. But fuel consumption will be a bit worse due to the AT gearbox.

    Hi John, I've enjoyed watching your Civic videos, I'll be in the market for a used estate in January, so I have a few months to research and decide what to get. Over the years I've had reasonably fast diesel estates ranging from 180-260bhp (Saabs, BMWs, Mazdas). I was wondering how you find the power/torque with the Civic? I really like the design, they seem pretty reliable and the fuel consumption seems pretty good, my only worry is the potential lack of power, what are your thoughts on this?

    • @johndglynn
      @johndglynn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tommy, there's enough power for me but there are a few people remapping them. They have a great chassis and are fun to drive - I am running Michelin CrossClimates which helps. If you're looking for 200bhp then the Civic may feel a little slow but you can "make progress" in one.
