    First, I love this video. I usually don't watch hauls but this one felt so much more fun because you were able to weave in the stories around the road trip and the bookstores/booksellers.
    I also will go to a bookstore basically any time I am in a new city and generally my rule of thumb is, when possible, to either pick up a staff pick or to pick up something I hadn't heard of/seen before (as opposed to something popular that I could get back home). It is definitely a fantastic souvenir when traveling.
    Also also, I am also opposed to coffee in small mugs.

    • @TheBookBully
      @TheBookBully  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for validating my mug feelings. Why would you ever want *less* coffee???
      I remember when I first started watching your videos you talked about picking up books as souvenirs and very clearly I have taken that on board in a big way!

    Jill! So many connections I don't know where to begin lol. I loved this video and your enthusiasm about your trip! So glad you had a great time. First of all, I'm happy to hear you enjoyed Brazos, here in Houston, and yes, agreed, the staff there is great.
    I love New Orleans too. The drive there from Houston is so cool too with those long bridges over the Atchafalaya Swamp and Bayous. So cool!
    I used to live in Savannah. My first job was playing in the Savannah Symphony, and I lived in a garage apartment, next door to Lady Chablis' attorney! I biked past the "murder house" every day on my way to rehearsals/concerts. The next wild thing, is that I know Ling Ling! She's a violinist and I know her from music festivals, plus she's from Houston. Her brother used to be the concertmaster of the Houston Symphony, where I now work. I'm embarrassed to say I haven't read her book yet, but it's def on my list.
    While you were on your trip, I was also on an epic six week road trip from Houston to Alaska, and I listened to Solito! I loved it!!!! It is sad for sure, but such an important work and probably the tip of the iceberg of what so many people go through in their harrowing migration journeys. I also listened to Catherine The Great by Massie, and loved it!
    Anyway, what a great idea to use bookstores as your milestones on your trip and to get a special book from each bookseller. I wish I'd thought of that for my trip lol, but now I'm so inspired for the next time I go somewhere! I did stop in a cool book/knitting/tea store in Dawson Creek, BC, called Faking Sanity (great name!) but only bought wool, no books lol.
    Oh, I almost forgot, I also read Permanent Astonishment on my trip, thanks to you. I wouldn't have even heard of this book if it weren't for you and I absolutely loved it, so thank you so much! It was everything you said it was. Happy reading! Jonathan

    New to your channel and completely love your video. How fun and what a great idea to have a book that was picked from every store you went to. I instantly thought of 2 books I would of recommend to you if you were to come into the store I work at. They are both older books and you may have read them but I would of picked The Great Alone byKristen Hannah or The Life She Was Given by Ellen Marie Wiseman. This just goes to show you how many books there are in the world. All those books you bought and the only one I had heard of was the first book you showed. Sounds like an amazing trip.

    What a fun trip you had. Did you have time to see the statue on the cover on Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil? The book is certainly oldie but goodie. Oh, your DC choices were spot on. I lived in Washington DC for about 10 years and have many fond memories of author talks etc at both bookstores. I also lived in New Orleans in the 1980s but never even knew about the Faulkner bookstore - but I did book walks several times. I must plan bookstore visits around future road trips. Wondering if you didn't take pictures of the stores because of privacy issues. Such a novel idea to have the booksellers inscribe your books.
    Thank you for taking us along.

      Ah I did take pictures but I'm honestly such a bad photographer that I'm like, embarrassed how bad they are lol. I will be posting them on my Instagram soon! I saw Lady Chablis in the most random place--years ago, I noticed this big old Cadillac rounding the parking lot and when this yacht/car found a place, out she hopped to go shopping at Saks in Birmingham, Al. I wish I had known about your trip as Birmingham, Al. has a book store that only sells signed first editions for their normal price. BTW it was nice to hear nice things about the US ...with all the political crap by our former Pres. you can forget how beautiful it can be here.

    • @TheBookBully
      @TheBookBully  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh wow! Lady Chablis sounds like she was a larger than life character!

      @@TheBookBully It's a little known treasure, even in Birmingham, called the Alabama Booksmith. He has a clientele all over the world. He also known as all his books face forward. I have a few books that have grown in value. Glad you had a good trip!!

  • @bookishsabrina
    @bookishsabrina ปีที่แล้ว

    At this rate you have probably seen more of the US than I have!
    If you liked the Whitney Plantation, you should check out How the Word is Passed. I freaking loved that book. It would have paired really nicely with your road trip, because the book is essentially an American road trip going to various places that are tied to white supremacy and the legacy of slavery. There's a whole section in that book about the Whitney.
    Solito was very harrowing but also very good! But some of the scenes were to visceral and horrible that I'll never forget them.
    Also your descriptions of the bookstores are so cozy. It makes me wish I was an indie bookseller. I know I get to be around books all day as a librarian, but I don't get to do a lot of reader's advisory like I would in a bookshop and I would love to be able to gush about books all day. Retirement goals I guess, work as a part-time bookseller just to get me out of the house 😅
    Also I've owned The Girl Who Wrote Loneliness for like 6 years or something so if you ever want to do a buddy read I'm so down. I'm need something to push me into finally getting to it.

    • @TheBookBully

      Yes let's do a buddy read!!
      Visiting the bookstores made me want to quit my job and become a bookseller. Maybe when we retire we can open a bookstore together 😻

    What an amazing trip!! I am so jealous. I loved everything about this video - Benny, your bed, the wallpaper, the books on your nightstand - and of course, your haul!! Love that mug and those lovely tote bags.
    Now, thoughts on the books:
    - I ended up buying that same edition of Demon Copperhead from Amazon US because I missed out on the UK hardcover and I don’t like the UK paperback
    - I am also planning on reading Nancy Mitford! I watched the recent adaptation of Pursuit of Love and enjoyed it and so I bought Pursuit of Love, Love in a Cold Climate, and Don’t Tell Alfred (the third in this loose trilogy). I also want to read Christmas Pudding by her as I like to read classic Christmas themed books during the holidays.
    Anyway, I’m sure I had other thoughts and should have made notes but again, loved this video.
    Oh, if you do ever go back to DC I love eating at the Old Ebbitt Grill for a fancy evening meal and the Founding Farmers for breakfast - they have phenomenal but expensive bacon.

      @jenntendo64system ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I almost forgot - I am embarrassed by how few bookstores I went to while I lived in NYC. In my defense we had a small one bedroom apartment and it was a very temporary situation. I went to the Strand and one Barnes and Noble in Union Square and that was it.

    4700 km!!! Wow!! Are you going to read David Copperfield first? Should I? Have you been to Bookland in Kingston, Ontario? The owner is amiable and we always have a good chat about books. They sell used and new. Another great bookstore is Books on Main in Bath, Ontario. If you go in the fall on a Saturday you can drive a little further west and find an apple orchard called Spring Meadows which makes THE most delicious apple cinnamon donuts. What a fantastic trip you had!

      I can't imagine a world where I read David Copperfield first. I am not an Dickens apologist 😬 thanks for the lovely recommendations in Ontario! I did a bookstore crawl from Ottawa to Kingston one summer in the pandemic but we didn't make it to Bookland. Guess I'll have to go again 🤷🏼‍♀️
