The Color Purple by Alice Walker is one of my favorite novels. The movie is one of the few times I wasn't disappointed by a movie rendition of a book. Whoppi should have won the Oscar for portraying Celie, period!
Not only was Whoopi robbed but the whole movie was robbed, it should have had Best Movie, Best Actress & Actor, Best Supporting Actress & Actor as well as Best Director for Steven Spielberg
Same, however the movie was significantly different from the book. Character dynamics, backgrounds, etc. For example: after Celie left Mister, he'd still come to visit her at her home house on the porch and they'd wait for signs of Surge Avery coming back into town. He actually showed interests of wanting to sleep with Celie again when Surge Avery wasn't going to show back up into town anytime soon. Of course Celie shut that idea that and made it clear that anything they to do with each other in the future was STRICKLY PLATONIC! Another thing in the book it was revealed that Surge Avery had several children that she'd abandoned and left for her mother to raise! She was especially a pariah to her mother and father! The marriage between her and the happy go lucky man she'd married later on in the stories DIDNT LAST LONG AT AT. Celies's sister ended up in romantic relationship with the pastor she followed and travel to Africa after the pastor's wife had succumb to illness and dies in the story. The sister eventually marries the Pastor as well in the book! That doesn't happen in the 80's film.

Whoopi G is one of the greatest gifts to acting humanity has ever been given. Some people don’t understand how DEEP the roots and connection of the color purple go. If you have never been black and poor and from the US south there are hardly the words to express that experience in the 30s/40s. It's almost like trying to explain a descent in madness. I'm an almost 40yr old white woman, and I always remember, as a little girl-far too young (maybe 6/7) watching the Color Purple and it being one of my favourite films. I obviously didn't understand the material, but the imagery and music and the strength in this film- that I could feel as a little girl - kept me asking my mom to watch it again. I used to say 'the movie with the bloody hand print and Whoopie" (who is and was one the best actors ever in my opinion) (the imagery of that hand print stuck with me.) As a woman of colour, black women have gone through so much and continue to.
It's great to hear of a cast that got along rather than there being underlying tension.
Whoppi's acting in the original was awesome. She should have been nominated but Steven S made it all possible and of course the book was amazing
I am so proud to grow up with the Original Movie The Color Purple. Seeing this very Special Project vibrant. I am so excited to see this musical version of The Color Purple on the Silver Screen. Seeing Whoopi & Fantasia next to each other while holding the Character and Spirit of Celie in their Hearts is so Beautiful. Bravo to everyone who put their Authenitc Energy into bringing this incredible novel to life. Alice Walker must be twinkling amongst the Stars so proudly 💗
They casted this adaptation VERY WELL!!!
I hope all 3 of these women get an Oscar nomination and I hope one of them wins
Whoppi did that role justice too! I watched it with my mum around 2005 and it was a wonderful and eye opening! I will never forget
Love the cast of the Color Purple.
This was one of my favorite movies growing up the strength I saw was huge the love between the ladies was amazing Whoopi deserves all the flowers for her performance in the color purple
Can’t wait to see this on Christmas Day. 🙌
Hope it flops
I'm sure I'm not the ONLY one who had tears in their eyes with Whoopi's standing ovation. Oscar done wrong on this one!!!!
Whats understood doesn't have to be explained.
I look forward to seeing this movie with my group of spectacular Black Women.
Thank you Ms. Oprah Winfrey.
💜💜💜
Yesss give her her crown 👑 whoopi did that role justice back then so she really do deserve her roses 🌹 just now.
Congratulations to the Matriarch Whoopi on winning her Oscar; and congratulations to all the Beautiful Legendary Actresses and King Blitz and a phenomenal and Prestigious job. I can't wait to see the movie
Fantasia is going to end up becoming a big movie star!
Let's be clear! Whoopi, you absolutely owned Celie! I went back and looked at the first CP again. I was a young girl when it came out, I had read the book and went by myself to the watch it at 16. Whoopi you were AMAZING and beautiful and so talented. You are so humble and you don't brag on yourself often but you deserve your flowers!!! You made me cry and the scene when you look in the mirror full smile and laugh........i don't have words! ( I just paused for several minutes trying to come up with them) Thank you Whoopi you are a super talent and I hope you know it deep in your bone marrow!
Yes whoopi you should definitely receive your flowers my love. I truly appreciate all that you did in the first movie ❤
They so humble and grateful ❤
Whoopi is so humble, and a great example on how you should receive success. And not winning an Oscar for The Color Purple is insane to me, but the Oscars aren't for black people, let alone REAL talent anyway. Which is why Momma been clearing $9M+ a year from the View for the last 10+ years. Quiet as it kept, the OSCARS is beneath her credentials anyway. They could never.
Yes Whoopi!! That is and always will be my absolute favorite movie. I can't wait to see the new one!
We love the cast of the color purple
