Omg! Never thought anyone knew this game! This was the first card game I learned to play at 10 before other card games on the island (they called it "suipi" meaning sweep) and coming back to the state no one knew what I was talking about except my grandparents. I'm glad came across this vid
Thank you for the video! My grandma taught us this game and we loved it, but forgot how to play. This was a great refresher and now we are ready to play it again! Swoop is so fun!
Thanks! My Husband is traveling for work and staying with friends instead of at a hotel. His friends mentioned that they wanted to play cards tomorrow night and said Swoop was a fun game to play. We've never heard of it. I'm passing your video along so he will be able to watch and learn the game prior to his friends teaching it. Looks fun and I'm looking forward to him getting home so I can play as well.
@@RockinRobinCooks Their variation is 4 of a kind swoop can be used at any time. For example, if the person next to you played 3s you can play 4-8s to swoop the pile. Otherwise it seems about the same.
There is a card game similar that I'm familiar with known as Castle (Sometimes taught as Palace). Usually don't play for points and some cards have a special value (a 2 can "reset" the pile for example).
Yes ..I agree Palace is what it's originally called according to my penguin book of card games published in 73 many in the African continent, call it castle ..but many Europeans and Americans give it a curse word these days called " sh** head " ha ha But the object of..and the principle remains the same . It's the slight variations that allow us all to change names, I guess ..😂
I learned how to play Swoop about 5 years ago. I was taught by a couple of card sharks in Chandler, Arizona. The senior community seem to know the best card games!
Hey this is the first time ever I didn't leave hungry after watching...this looks like a fun game..thanks for sharing..I'll try this out at the next get together
Thank you so much. I’ve been looking for a new card game. My friends and I have been playing Phase 10 and I am getting tired of playing the same game over and over again. This looks like fun and easy enough to be able to visit while playing.
@@RockinRobinCooks It's popular at our Senior park in Florida. We call it "Swipe" and sized it down a little from the Swoop version. We take out the Jokers and 10s are only 20 against you. And for fun we use 20 cards instead of 19 and if you can pick 20 off the deck you get 10 points off your score!
I've not heard of this before, but it sure looks a good card game, I'm going to get some cards and start learning to play Thank you, for sharing Rockin Robin, :-)
Glad someone finallly made a vid of this. We learned swoop at Palm Creek in Arizona 3 years ago. Sizeable groups of us would sit around and play swoop for hours. Fun game, lighter than bridge. Folks can get quite excited when yelling 'swoop!'
We have been playing something very similar called Swipe. Only difference is: No Jokers and 12 cards in your hand to start. That is, the Ten is the wild card. Rest appears the same. Have never been able to find anything on Swipe either. And, we use a card shuffler and, one person deals - 4 down, 4 up and then the 12 face down per player. One card at a time in clockwise direction. Lastly, one can only Swipe with 4 cards max.
I have a rules question. If you play a card that is higher than the last card on the pile you have to pick the pile up. But even if you have a lower card you can still play a higher card to pick up the pile? Also if youre playing a card where you have to pick up the pile can it be from your face up cards on the table?
You wouldn't want to pick up the pile by playing a higher card if you have a lower card because the goal is to get rid of all your cards and go out. The facedown cards can only be played after your swoop or if the player wishes to gamble that the facedown card might be lower than the one already played. As far as the faceup cards go, I think you can play it if all your cards are higher than the card played before you.
I have been following your site for a long time. I have made many of the recipes you posted. All were hits with the family. Today I found your video on Swoop. We get together with our kids and grands to eat and play games. I can’t wait to teach them this one. Thank you so much!😊
Thank you Elaine! I’m glad you and your family are enjoying my recipes. I’m glad you will be trying swoop. What a great way to spend time with your family.
Thanks for a great video, we have played before and I have a question you didn't hit upon. If you can't get under a card played and can't swoop it, you must pick up the cards and add them to your hand. Who then leads out after you have picked up? The next player in line?
It's a great game. If you have several swoop cards in your hand, keep track of the other players in terms of how many cards they have left. You don't want to get stuck with a lot of swoop cards as they are worth 50 points each. So if you think someone is close to going out, dump the swoop cards as quick as you can. Have fun playing!
We need clarification on the rules. Must you play the same value card that's on top of the pile if you have any? Then play a lower card if you don't have the same as the top? Or can you choose to play either a lower card or the top of the pile card? For example, pile shows queens on top. Next player has a queen. Must they play the queen or can they choose to play under it, holding onto their queen?
Usually you want to get rid of your highest cards first so you can play under other players cards. Highest cards take the pile and we don't want the pile right? We want to get rid of all our cards first if we can.
We often play without keeping score so getting stuck with high cards in your hand doesn't matter. One player always prefers to unload multiples rather than a single card that matches the top card. Is it legal to play 3 4s if you have a 5 (the top card) in your hand?
What do you do when the only card you have left is a swoop card? Do you discard and go out or do you have to pick up the other cards because it’s more points?
Thanks for your video. My family is in a dilemma on the rules of when you can’t play a card at the same value or below. For example, if somebody plays a 2, and you don’t have a 2 or an ace, what happens after that? Do you play a higher card and then take the whole pile? Or do you take that higher card as part of the pile too?
What we do is play a card from either your hand or a face down card in front of you. If its a 2 or an ace you are good and it's the next persons turn. if you only have higher cards in your hand to play, they you place one down to show the others and then pick up that pile. Then it's the next persons turn.
Thank you for posting. Can you "go out" using a swoop card (10 or joker)? Example ....The player before me had to pick up the pile and I only have one card and it is a 10. Can I play it or do I have to pass?
This is a great tutorial! We played it with my husband's sisters family (they called it Swoosh) and were trying to remember how to teach it to our family, so this was absolutely great! Thank you so much! My husband says you're a great teacher! 🙂
Rules question: I played this with friends, and I was under the belief if you have a card that can match or get under the card on the table, you have to either play that, or flip a face down and gamble you’ll get under it….. what our friends were doing is intentionally taking the pile when they liked the cards, by putting a high card over it, even though in their hand, they could have gotten under it. In one scenario, there were 2 6’s on the table, and the player got over the card by unloading 4 jacks, and gladly taking the 2 6’s. It made it too easy to dump bad cards. Are you allowed to intentionally take the pile?
Yes, you can intentionally take the pile. That’s how we play it. If there are cards in the pile that match what you have in your hand and it helps you get rid of more, then yes. That’s part of the strategy of this game!
Thank you for a good tutorial. One question I have is when you don’t have anything lower than what is on the pile and you have to play a higher card, you then have to take all the card and place them in your hands, is that player’s turn finished or does he get to play a new card starting a new pile?
Yes that players turn has ended. You only get to play a new card starting a new pile after you have swooped the pile by making 4 or more of a suit or you play a swoop card.
So if I cannot play a lower card than what is required and I want to use one of my faceup cards of the 4 stacked, if I have 2 of the same facing up, can I play them both, thus uncovering 2 instead of 1. I still have to take the whole pile, but now I've effectively uncovered 2 instead of 1.
You could use one of the face down cards in front of you because you don't know if it's lower or higher than the card played. If what you played is higher, you take the pile. You cannot play two higher cards from the cards placed up in the pile in front of you. I don't think it's fair to be able to play a high card from the 4 that are in front of you for the sole purpose of uncovering one of the piles. We play this by using one of the cards in your hand which is higher than the card being played. Hope that makes sense.
Toward the end of your video, you show player #1, just after a swoop, putting out two kings. Then you have that same player add one of his facedown cards, which happens to be a swoop card. If it had been a lower card, could he have played it, seeing that it doesn't match his king? As long as that card was either a swoop card or something lower, he can play it? But he couldn't play one of his lower cards in his hand, seeing that it doesn't match the king card?
It was player #3 that played the two kings. Then it was player #1 turn. He had to play kings or something under it. He decided to play the face down card and it was a swoop card.
We play swoop and were looking for a refresher on how to play. Everything you described is just how I remember, but I was thinking there was some other rule about when you can use the up-facing cards on the table. For example, if you had a king showing on the table, but none in your hand, can you play the king?.Thanks for the refresher. Swoop is our favorite card game! You’re right, we couldn’t find anything else online about swoop. Where are you located? We learned the game from folks in Pagosa Springs, CO.
As far as your question goes about playing the king from the cards on the table, I believe if you are leading then yes you can play the king from the pile on the table. So lets say after you play a swoop card and now you are starting over or leading, you can play that king. Let me know if you have any other questions and I will try to help. I did write the rules which can be found below the video in the description area.
@@RockinRobinCooks Oh Robin, thank you so much for making this video! My family and I did play this last summer when they came, and now two of the families play swoop often. You say that "The facedown cards can only be played after a swoop...or". Does that mean the cards turned up on the table in front of player can be played at any time, including the start of the game?
You can play the face down cards when you want but you would probably want to play them after you have swooped or when someone else has played a high card since you don't know what your face down card is. You would have to add a deck or two. Remember each player gets 19 cards. Multiply that by the number of players. Each deck has 52 cards. Just make sure you have enough to cover the number of players.

Great explanation!! We call this Sweep. Pretty similar rules! It’s a family favorite. I’ve also heard it called 10s
I am learning that swoop can be called by several different names! Great game!
