I have an R160 diff with 3.70 ratio. After removing the carrier I discovered that the bolt pattern between the 2 rings gears are very different. The ring on want to replace has 8 bolts holding in and the new ring gear takes 12 bolts. So replace the carrier? Is that even an option?
carriers are same for most STIs, depending on the year of yours. In other words you can fit different ratio gears in a different year STI, ring gears, pinion gears....go on facebook, get into the Subaru Mechanics group and ask that question there.
Sounds like you have an '80s R160 from a XT or something. You'd need the correct carrier. You need to pay close attention to the axles as well. IIRC, The XT had a R160 with a clutch LSD and 3.7 FD. It used male axles. The VLSD R160 used a female axle due to the stubs on the diff.
Hello, so the 06 diff is LSD with the 3.5 gears. so you are putting the LSD from the 06 into the 04 to use the 3.9 gears? i am asking because i also have an 06 r180 from an STI and i want to change gears. can i put gears from a non lsd r180? i would like 4.11 or 4.44 if possible.
the diff and the carrier came from an 04. I had to switch just the diff from the 04 to my 06, so I had to keep my original ring gear and pinion, I think i show the difference between the gears in this or the next part. Whenever you change gearing in your rear diff you need to do the same to your front diff. Otherwise front wheels will spin faster or slower then the rear wheels, which would be bad news. If this was a rear wheel car then it wouldnt matter but since we got all wheel drive then it does.
I have this sti diff on my 280z. Since it bolts up to the car. So I don't have to worry about the front like you guys. Hehe. Jk. It has the 3.54 gears I just wanted to know if I can just get any Subaru r180 rear diff and change the gears. Thanks for the info.
i put a r160 true track LSD 4:44 = fast street rear diff with matching sti trans and front diff ! cost me $2,000
Good stuff.
Cool stuff
When are we going to see next Harley video?
whenever you will bring yours ;)

I would think you can but you need to change both gears, ring and pinion and make sure to do a lash adjustment after the switch.
