For those wondering why I censored the hits from the 09 Browns game, did it in case it got the video demonetized, so wanted to be better safe than sorry. Otherwise I’d show the hit.

It wasn't just a dislocated knee that ended Stafford's rookie season. It was that, combined with the injury he got in the Browns game, that did it. He did come back to play after the Browns game, but was never right afterward. When he re-injured it and got a dislocated knee against the Jets, that's what ended his season.

Stafford was drafted at the same time I had become a young lions fan. I always loved him for the effort he gave and the talent I thought went unseen on a national landscape. No one ever gave him praise and it infuriated me. When he went to the rams, it was bittersweet, because I lost one of my favorite athletes ever growing up, but I knew his time had passed. He deserved a real shot at contention, and a team in rebuild was not the vessel for that. I rooted for him on the rams and was overjoyed he was able to win. Even the media being disingenuous in waiting to give him praise now that he's won and pretend like he's always been great still bothers me. At the end of the day, he was a true representation of Detroit his whole time here. Even though he was counted out, he still went to work everyday and gave it his all, even when times were the worst. I will always love and respect Matthew Stafford.

I said it on my main comment but the year he had like 10 comeback wins and didn't sniff MVP still bothers me to this day. Those squads were not that talented (definitely not enough to be "unlocked" by a guy much less Patricia). There's no question his smooth performance steadied that ship like few other franchises could be at that time. To me, if you're gonna give a QB MVP, that should be the reason. Where you definitively can point at a guy and go "our team is bubkiss without him." Not just because a guy throws 30+TD's.

I'm a lifelong Lions fan, and in my opinion Stafford is a HoF lock and should be. His playstyle gets him a lot of picks (kinda like Josh Allen in terms of passing from 2023) but no matter what when you need him to be there he showed up. He's 5th all time in 4th Quarter Comebacks and 6th in Game Winning Drives, only behind some of the greatest QB's of all time and ahead or tied with Drew Brees, a HoF lock. I think that's telling enough.

Stafford did nothing but give it all he had. Even in the END, he gave Detroit a bunch of picks and another 1st round QB on the way out the door to help them start their new chapter.
I live in Michigan but grew up as Rams fan, I used to watch Lions games and would tell the guys that Stafford could win a title if the organization could get it together. Think about all that had to occur to turn that WHOLE franchise around, they had to FIRE everyone and start over, a complete rebuild...he just didn't think he had it in him to endure another one, a whole new system...he had already been through SO much by that time. That super bowl year showed what pairing him with a really good, complete team and a REALLY GOOD coach could do.
When he finally hangs them up, he'll get his gold jacket. I think he's got ONE more title in him, also.

The only way Stafford has another one in him is if they find another super bowl team to trade him to. The Rams were Super Bowl caliber before picking up Stafford, and a few others. for their super bowl winning season. They lost a couple of those players in the off season and look at how bad they started the next season. The rams sold the farm for that super bowl and Stafford wasn't the piece that carried the team, he was just another piece that helped hold together a puzzle that was pretty much finished.

Only an imbecile would make that claim.
I saw that playoff run, I saw that last drive in the Super Bowl when everyone was injured and Stafford only had ONE WR left.
I like Goff, he's a capable QB but I'm also a RAMS fan and got a BIG dose of what he's good at and what he's NOT. Goff never gets out of Tampa Bay in that playoff run, he really NEVER gets out of the NFC title game and even if he did, he stalls out on that last drive when the Rams need a SCORE to win because he doesn't throw that NO LOOK pass to draw Bell off for the crucial completion.
Stafford had his BEST year as a QB and a pro his FIRST year with the Rams...but yeah, keep up with that 'Stafford wasn't the reason' bullcrap.
Stafford WILL get another title and it WILL be with McVay.

@@twisteddemon1266 He was a puzzle piece...I guess you've heard it twice now. I'm not saying he wasn't a good quarterback. He was a high risk, high reward qb, and the issue with him, was that the risk part happened too often. 17 interceptions is huge. Not only are you taking away a chance for your team to score, you are giving the other team another chance to score. Goff isn't as electrifying as a qb, but he doesn't make as many mistakes. You can't tell me the defense is that much better on the current lions compared to when stafford played. Goff doesn't give the opponent extra chances with the ball.
Too many people just look at the positive stats and don't look at the negatives that are brought to the team

That playoff game vs the cowboys made me quit watching football for a little bit. I remember they hurried up, and ran a play after that flag. To prevent the refs from going back, they snapped the ball, and it was out of their reach to do anything to overturn the penalty. I was wrong as fuck though, after the second down play from that set of downs- They basically acted like it never happened ,then the refs picked the flag back up. They brought it back to that 4th down like the 1st down from the penalty. It wasn't just because it was a bullshit pickup on an obvious penalty. It was that they did it when it when the down of the penalty was not the previous play.

The one factor most overlooked is that Stafford had something like 6 or 8 hundred yard rushes by his running backs over a good 100 game stretch, so defenses had no fear of play action passes. They generally just put their ears back and tried to pressure Stafford as much as possible. You can see why he had over 25 4th qtr comebacks in his time in Detroit.

There was a lot of frustration, but there was also the sense that more often than not, Stafford would do the impossible. Like when Todd Gurley accidentally scored and left time on the clock for Stafford, you had the sense as a fan that the game was in hand, even though he still had to drive the length of the field. The basic blue print was start pretty well, do nothing in the second and third quarters, then steal the game at the end of the 4th. It was always exciting, but it just wasn't a good recipe for sustained success.

The Matthew Stafford era in Detroit was doomed after one mistake. The Lions decision to draft Eric Ebron instead of Odell Beckham Jr or Aaron Donald in 2014. The offense often stagnated when a team had nickel who could keep up with Tate. They didn't have a 3rd option. Odell would have taken pressure off Megatron and would have opened up the field for Tate but they passed and promoted Jeremy Ross from the practice squad who had one good game and was generally worthless. Or they could have picked Suh's replacement with Aaron Donald. And this isn't in hindsight. This was the only logical choice at the time. Even when Erbon was draft Mel Kiper was confused and said I thought they were picking Odell. Check the tape. He literally said it on air.

6-10 in 2010 was decent considering they started 2-10.
I'll always respect him for how much he gave this team. Hell, he wanted to come here. Sam Bradford stayed in college an extra year, most assuming to avoid being drafted by Detroit but Stafford wasn't scared of it. I feel the 2014 season playoff loss to Dallas is when doubt about getting it done here probably started to creep into his head. Maybe they still don't win with that penalty but the chance of winning was taken from them.

Stafford was a good QB, but he was never anywhere near the caliber of Manning and Brady. Brady and Manning were not only clutch, but they were LEADERS who put the team on their backs and set the tone for the whole team not just offensively. The reason he had to come back so much during his time in Detroit, was because his led offenses didn't always get ahead early, but always found themselves behind in the end, that amounted to so many of his empty passing yards. He won't make the team great but he's a great complimentary player.

Stafford was inconsistent. He was the best worst qb in the league when he was with the lions. At times he would look superhuman, but then he would also look like a back up qb throwing some of the worst interceptions. Many of Staffords comebacks were from his own turnovers.
I don't think Stafford was a terrible qb, but he wasn't a great qb. You couldn't rely on him to consistently carry your team. If you needed him to march your team down the field one time, you had pretty good faith in him. If you needed him to consistently put the team on his back, he wasn't going to do it.
He now has a super bowl win, but he was on probably the best all around team in the NFL. Yet he still made his bone head mistakes, like the throw to the 49ers in the conference championship (which was somehow dropped). He also had his typical league leading interceptions.
Goff may not be as electrifying as Stafford, but i have much more trust in Goff. He is less likely to throw a game away and is still putting up great stats.

It's not even they want you to be a dumpster fire. It's they want you for some reason to return to being irrelevant. A dumpster fire in New York with the Jets can still be a media circus people sell tickets for (Come one come all, come see the freaks!). Like so long as you're in that 5-9 win window for some reason thats okay with them. I don't get that. Why can't a long suffering fan base be proud of their team?
Also being humble has got them shit all. Campbell came in as HC and proclaimed the need to bite some knee caps, to get the dust (of losing) off their backs. Thats bold, to come in and say your past sucked. Screw it, doesn't matter lets kick some ass. New year new us. I'm hoping they take that to the SB (I wanted them to last year) since my teams resetting.
