  • In an electrifying performance, Ustaad Rafaqat Ali Khan and Jamil Assani deliver a stirring rendition of the Ismaili ginan, "Aaye Rahem Raheman." The emotive composition of Sayyida Imam Begum is beautifully revived and reimagined through their impassioned rendition of this poignant piece.
Sayyida Imam Begum is a revered name in the world of ginans. As the last major composer in the line and the sole known female figure of her class, her few yet profoundly beautiful compositions have etched an indelible mark in Ismaili musical heritage. Her creations, lauded for their heartfelt tenderness and contemplative intimacy, were often performed with the gentle accompaniment of a fiddle (sarangi), an instrument she mastered.
In the rendition of this ginan, Ustaad Rafaqat Ali Khan and Jamil Assani artfully blend classical and traditional singing styles. The classical elements honor the established musical structures, incorporating complex melodic and rhythmic patterns, elaborate ornamentation, and specific ragas. In contrast, the traditional style anchors the performance in the heart of the community, emphasizing the potent lyrics and melodies passed down through generations.
Ustaad Rafaqat Ali Khan, a venerated Pakistani classical and playback singer, carries forward his family's deep musical legacy. Trained under his esteemed father, Ustad Nazakat Ali Khan, Rafaqat has made significant contributions to classical, semi-classical, and playback singing genres. His debut on the Pakistani musical platform, Coke Studio, in 2016 was met with considerable acclaim, particularly for his performance of "Tu Kuja Man Kuja" alongside Sheraz Uppal.
Jamil Assani is a celebrated musician who has performed in over 15 countries. He has shared the spotlight with the Nooran Sisters, Sufi singer Sanam Marvi, and ghazal singer Munni Begum, adding to his impressive musical resume. Trained under the Pakistani film industry music director Karim Shahabuddin, Jamil also honed his skills in an orchestra led by his mentor, Nizar Lalani, in Karachi.
Together, Ustaad Rafaqat Ali Khan and Jamil Assani transform "Aaye Rahem Raheman" into a mesmerizing musical experience, carrying forward the profound spiritual message of Sayyida Imam Begum's work in their unique and compelling style.
