I saw this beautiful performance starring a young Stephanie Mills. Thank you mom and dad for exposing me to theatrical greatness in the form of this tiny songstress, vocalist powerhouse actress and the supporting cast. It was one of the best birthday gifts I received.
I loved the live visual effects. The stage turned black and all u can see was a little white dress spinning as if Dorothy was up in the air. The the backdrop turned purple showing the tornado landing
I saw this in NYC on a class field trip in 1977. Never forgot it & still have the album. In the revival they kept the ballet, but sped up the tempo so fast it was dizzying. They cut it completely in the new revival and the tornado only lasts a few seconds. This recording is the tempo & length it should be. It's only 3:25 minutes. It's one of my favorite pieces of the soundtrack.
I played tenor sax and clarinet for my town's production of The Wiz. It was an unforgettable experience. Thank you for helping me to relive the glory again.
Dwight Love It's on DVD right now. I wouldn't be in for too much disappointment. Despite it's rushed pacing, it's a beautiful new version of the Wiz. I actually never seen it onstage before but I hope so when it comes back to Broadway this coming season.
Dwight Love If that was available years ago, I would have been even more excited to see Stephanie Mills play Auntie Em and pass the torch to Shanice Williams.
A young Luther Vandross behind the scenes and not yet mainstream, helped compose this and many other tracks for this Broadway soundtrack which is the best version by Far and Beyond. Fun fact.💯❤️💪🏿🇺🇲
This Album here👆🏽made me love Broadway and the story of the Wizard of Oz even better. The orchestration for the Tornado ballet alone is incredible!👏🏽❤🥹 BRING BACK BROADWAY PIT ORCHESTRAS!!
I first heard this played on BBC2 in London at closedown in the 1970s. They never said what the closedown music was. It knocked me out and it took me months to find out what it was and get the record. Broadway pit musicians in full flight! Wow!
Ohio theatre and the road cast rock and rolled for two weeks and the actors where greatest. I'll never forget there. Performance and the love. The best portrayal of the original Wizard of Oz. !
When I was in grade school I saw the movie in the theaters when it was brand new. Later I found this album of the stage production in the library, and I must admit I was always disappointed that Quincy Jones never tried to use this piece of music because it quickly became my fave on the entire album! My other biggest fave was/is "I Was Born The Day Before Yesterday". :)
When the casting for the movie was announced, a lot of people were very disappointed that Stephanie Mills didn't get re cast as Dorothy, and Andre DeShields as the Wiz. But they did leave Ted Ross and Mabel King in their original roles. And having Lena Horne play Addapearle was a plus.
Just saw the revival tonight in San Francisco in its pre-Broadway run and... nope, they completely removed this number and put in an "updated" version that wasn't half as compelling, thrilling and exciting as the original AND they cut the entire tornado sequence down to what felt like less than two minutes. A lot of good stuff in this revival, yes; but this cut was, for me, the most glaring omission and I hope there was a very good reason they excised it and not just a creative whim in favor of updating the show because it not being there was one of the few, yet massive, disappointments of this production.
I was expecting more dark and scary music but this sounds amazing! Cirque Du Solei is doing the acrobatic effects for the Wiz Live's Tornado sequence on December 3rd so they better make it good.
Never saw this one. 42nd St was fantastic, Dream Girls I really liked, too. Of course, the first musical/play I ever saw was West Side Story....fond memories there. Not usually a 'Show Tunes' kinda guy....wink, wink :)
(I pick up wat u b sayin') she said w a lisp! By Dec '14 we are heading to Philly to a Shipyard there. It will be STRANGE being all Southern-Fried & hick-talking but I WELCOME the experience. Man OH MAN I will finally get to see how civilized people live life! The South Sucks a BIG érn. lemme tell ya!
Yea. Been awhile. But even back when I was there in Metarie, about 25 years ago for about 5 months, I hated it. New Orleans is great for a long weekend. But, full time, no thanks.
Mick MacDonald I wouldn't go anywhere towards that cesspool , besides Mardi Gras "Actually" originated in 1703 in the1st capital of French LaLouisianne (1702)...aka Mobile, Alabama, This was 15 years before New Orleans was founded!
Opening theme of the first version of the Brazilian soap opera "A Viagem", exhibited by the extinct Tupi Television Network between october 1975 and march 1976

+Matthew Bennett They are in case you did not hear! It'll be on December 3rd with original Broadway Dorothy Stephanie Mills as Auntie Em leading an all star cast that includes former Hairspray co stars Queen Latifah and Ellijah Kelly who played Maybelle and her son Seaweed as the title character and the Scarecrow. Also in the cast are Common, Ne Yo as the Tin Man, David Allen Grier as the Lion, Her Majesty Queen Mary J. Blige of Hip Hop as the Wicked Witch, former Glee star Amber Riley as the witch of the north and newcomer Shanice Williams as Dorothy.
An unheard or little known at the time Luther Vandross had a lot do with the writing and choreography of this Broadway sound track which in my opinion is much better than the theatre.
There honestly is no better version of this soundtrack than the ORIGINAL Broadway recording. This is THE best!! Thank you for uploading it!
Exactly all others are garbage besides Michael Jackson's You Can't Win.
None
I remember watching our advanced dance class perform to this piece!!! It was the finale & just magical!!❤❤
Absolutely
Frrrr

Me too 2x! On Broadway--fantastic,👍👍👍
Me too! It was my first Broadway play and I was so fascinated!! Cemented my love for musicals.
This piece of music should've been released as a single. It has a disco feel to it. I could see dancers dancing to this song on "Soul Train".
It was actually. Check the extended versions of it on YT. It was pressed on Atlantic as a Disco single.

Did you enjoy the NBC Live version?
+Manuel Orozco I missed it still kicking myself!!!!!!!!!!

Dwight Love If that was available years ago, I would have been even more excited to see Stephanie Mills play Auntie Em and pass the torch to Shanice Williams.
Man this is one of the best arrangements ever!! I listened to this over and over as a kid. Love it!
1975, Great music.
Carl Thethird Give thanks to Quincy Jones as stated before he helped to write the music for this 70s classic.
"Tornado" is composed by Timothy Graphenreed and Harold Wheeler.
I absolutely love this track! This was one of my favorite parts of the show. I loved dancing to it!
I remember being in dance class & watching the advanced dancers dance to this piece & being mesmerized!!

I''m playing the first flute part with this exact score for the Wiz... it's unbelievably hard to play!! x
Has that unmistakable 70's soul sound doesn't it?
George Strum Yes it does!!!!
OMG, Yes!
Disco
I agree. I saw it 3 times in st.louis. once with Stephanie Mills and twice with Ren Woods as Dorothy. Great!!!!
gives me goosebumps everything! it's so epic.
Ohio theatre and the road cast rock and rolled for two weeks and the actors where greatest. I'll never forget there. Performance and the love. The best portrayal of the original Wizard of Oz. !
Pure Childhood Joy thank you for posting it💜
I did the whole wiz at school. Starting with this dance
Hoooly crap... I've been looking for this track forever lol... Thank you for uploading this one. Definitely one of my faves from the soundtrack.
I played this along with the movie clip of the Wizard of Oz Tornado scene and it matches perfectly
Must try this!!👍🏽

There’s a revival coming. They gave us the full orchestration for Sweeney, GIVE IT TO US FOR THIS!!

My school is doing this musical for march, and I'm doing our light board, so I went to our first rehearsal and I got hooked on the music.
Lights are the absolute best
Wow my school is also doing it this upcoming march

I remember being in our college dance company and being in awed of the talented dancers performing this piece as the grand finale👍👍👍👍❣❣❣❣👍
@@tanyaobregon2266 No kidding. I wish the NBC version of the scene was not rushed
I played the bass line to this in our high school play.
The bass is amazing in the songs in this musical!
I'm gonna play this ever time we have a tornado
My favorite track on the album. Thank You!
Play this at 1.25 speed. It feels like you’re in the middle of that twister 🌪 Mother Oya Energy all over!

I saw it in 1976, and I can still see the choreography of the Tornado in my head when I listen to this.
So glad you've posted these I might be getting a main part in the wiz and I needed these so much thank you!

"A Viagem"
@dal4018 Thanks for that, chum
Natalie Parker Glad you enjoyed this again saw this in the 70s twice loved it!!!!
HBCU marching bands play this tune. I just see them horns swaying
Can anyone tell me in full detail how the tornado was staged in the original show.
They cut this from the 2024 tour and I’m mad about it 😡
I hope Sean Puffy Combs doesn’t get a hold of this and sample/remix it. I’d be pissed!!! It’s great just the way it is.

Quincy Jones helped to write the music for this play
Quincy Jones wrote additional music for the movie version, but he didn’t work at all on the stage version.
@@GarudaMan9 Okay I thought he worked on the play it sounded like he had a influence on this song Tornado
