The first thing I want to give you is to want God to Bless you for posting this beautiful soundtrack. A long time ago my mom and I visited New York City, I'm talking about a space of 45 years, I was 19 years old, today I am 64 years old. And my mom and I went to see this musical on Broadway, it was unforgettable for me, I had never seen anything like it before and it had such an impact on me. We bought the record and I listened to it thousands of times. In the turns that life gives I had to move from my house and put aside my collection of vinyl records. So hearing it again is a treasure. First because it transports me to New York City with my mom, she takes me to that special day and then because she allows me to remember her in life with me. Thanks again for posting it.
Came here to pay my respects to Hinton upon hearing the sad news 4 months ago. R.I.P. Hinton. I'm grateful you were able to live a longer life and see the impact the musical had in the past 5 decades on both Oz culture and Broadway theater with its all-African American cast along Raisin inspiring more musicals with African-Americans in the cast. May you and Michael Jackson ease on down the road together in Heaven. 🌽🧠🤔
I was honored to play the scarecrow in our college production of the wiz and got to sing this song back in 83..wow time flies but the memories live forever#Ilovethewiz
As cringe as it is now, for good reason, I also played the Scarecrow my Senior year in high school in Indianapolis, IN in 1982. We really didn't know any better. That said, I auditioned with "You Can't Win" from the film because I wanted to make it clear which role I had my heart set on. I feel like "I Was Born..." is actually more difficult because of the nature of the patter AND trying to make "penciled in eyes and a penciled in nose" understandable without destroying the flow! It was a great experience to get the opportunity to play the part. I MADE my mother buy me the cassette tape as soon as it came out in the 70s and as a little gay autistic boy the fact that I was pink instead of brown had no effect on my love of the show at all.
Listening to both, the two songs really complement one another very well. "The Crow Anthem" is about the crow's philosophy that the odds are always stacked against you so there's no point in even trying to improve your life. While this song is about how today is a new day, you're alive, and you can try and make things better for yourself. It'd be so much better if "The Crow Anthem" is done while the Scarecrow is tied to the post, and then after he is freed, he sings "I was Born on the Day Before Yesterday". It'd make for quite an interesting commentary on the African-American experience as well.
I agree I performed in this show back in 1997 as the Cowardly Lion. It was awesome except we didn't use this song. I am directing this show this summer and yes we are using this song.
My grandmother who is still living play this album for me back in 1985. This brings back memories. Now that I’m older, I swear I thought this guy who is singing is been Varene.
Got to see the original in New York in the 70's when it came out, I still can play this soundtrack today and sing each song word for word. Rest in peace Mr. Hinton Battle. They can revive it as many times as they want, but none will ever top the original cast.
I saw this production in Augusta, Ga in the mid 90's. Actor Shay Roundtree played the role of the Scarecrow and sang this song brilliantly. He then went on to star in the movie Drumline as Big Rob opposite Nick Cannon. Along w other tv appearances and over 50 National Commercials.👏This song brings back so many great memories.
As a child in the 70s our neighborhood was putting on The Wiz. when i saw it in the movies and Michael Jackson had done a totally different song, I was pissed! I laugh today, but This is an unheard od great song.

It’s sad Michael Jackson didn’t get to sing this because not only would he obviously slay it because it’s prefect for him to have a dance solo in this, being that the scarecrow is gaining his ability to use his feet. Have Dorthy sing the back up and it would’ve been a truly iconic scene.

This scarecrow song is nice, but I'm the only one on here, it seems, who liked MJ's You Can't Win" better. MJ's song makes the scarecrow sound hopeless like he's given up, then Dorthy gives him hope. But, this scarecrow says, "...he knows he going to make it," means he already has hope before Dorthy invites him along to get a brain.
