This NEW Ai Threatens To Make Designers "Go Away" (Is It That Bad?)

  • There is a new Ai that has been touted as the thing that will make graphic designers 'go away'. The Ai program in question has been created by Microsoft, and actually it isn't a finished fully fledged program as of yet, it's a work in progress.
    COLE was crafted by 12 people over at Microsoft, and is a merging together of various different Ai tools. It can be used to generate designs that also have editable text, but also where the user can apply prompts to parts of the design to change them in real time, rather to regenerating design after design.
    But am I worried about it? Well in the video you will realise how I feel about this situation, and artificial intelligence in general. As a graphic designer, I'm not that worried about COLE or Ai, not at the moment anyway. There will come a time when I think things will be totally overrun, but not for a long while yet. It won't just be graphic designers who suffer, it will be most job sectors. That is a future that's a ways away yet.
    If you found todays video on this new Ai program enjoyable or useful, let me know in the comments section and drop a like on your way out. Subscribe to stay updated to all of my uploads and until next time, design your future today, peace ✌️

    While it makes sense to have a great, trained designer, we have to remember companies won’t make the smart choice if it means saving a buck. How many people are constantly slammed at work because their company would rather burn out their employees than staff up to the numbers they actually need. Corporate America doesn’t care if quality suffers if they get a little more money in their bonus. If you go to a new Target or grocery store they are almost all self check out now. It sucks, but it isn’t going away. Designers have every right to be worried because most designers actually work for the kind of small companies that will move to the AI model. We can’t stick our heads in the sand anymore.

    A lot of companies will prefer the bad examples shown in 4:00 rather than hire a graphic designer. Those AI applications will improve soon.
    Here is an example of what is happening right now, not in the future: A publisher I worked for uses AI excessively for book and magazine cover illustrations.
    This alone kills freelance opportunities for illustrators; you can't measure this kind of job loss by statistics.

      Once they go down that road and rely on AI, their brand and media presence will reflect the cookie cutter layouts, and they will either be comfortable with the cheap aesthetic, or they will realize having a brand manager and experienced designer actually creates a better brand experience. I think some companies will accept this, but the serious brands that are looking to scale are going to use humans.

      @@ghost-user559 I won't assume which of the two options you're suggesting is the one AI would take, but I actually believe that A. is what's happening. To me, that's more human, not robotic, and not something AI will get right as often - if at all.

    When I went Graphic Design school in 1992, we were in transition from photography, Berol Prismacolor art markers, type-setting, traditional illustration, PMTs to Macintosh Centris computers with Aldus Freehand, Pagemaker and Photoshop. The word "Desktop Publishing" was the worry of the time, giving any person with a computer, a clipart CD, and a scanner to make finished graphic production material. History is just repeating itself, and we'll survive, just like the last time. When VR becomes mainstream, think of all the opportunities for a "Graphic Director".

Every kid graduating with a BS in Marketing thinks they are a graphic designer because they can follow a template in Canva and kick out a mediocre design... As someone who is active on platforms like Upwork I can tell you that the AI doesn't disrupt only the low tier but also the mid tier. Someone willing to pay a designer a couple hundred $ for a project will still be more incentivized to go for a low cost option if the offer is good enough, and its really hard to impossible to beat the opportunity price of a 10-20 USD subscription that gives the client decent control over what they can generate.
    And besides, its not the only way. Even clients that use lets say Chat GPT 4 for concept references only already expect to pay less the designer simply because they consider they already have the concept done, and they subtract the value of it from the designer's pay. This is already visible on the market, will be increasingly so as more and more big companies launch competing tools. Maybe the highest tier of designers, the 10% will be safe from all this, but the industry is definitely going to change for all the rest of us very soon. No idea what to do about it either.

    That was the trouble with the advent of computers and the software a lot of companies have always undervalued the process of art and design they will purchase the kit themselves and use a grunt to churn out crappy design, all in the guise of saving a bit of money. Always an unmitigated disaster. The quite often also hire someone with very little talent to do this. When I was at collage had to learn typography, technical drawing, photography paste up, and also psychology and I was also a reasonable illustrator, then along came the computer so most of these jobs became redundant as one person had to do all this and have many hats for no extra pay as most of these were individually based careers. For another example was the hot metal typists who were all made redundant when the computer came along. Thousands in the newspaper industry all lost their jobs overnight. I have worked with Macs from almost the start and imported the very first Wacom tablet into this country so have been using this kit for a long time and first hand see the changes.

If a computer is ever programmed to be that smart fr then we as a world have an even bigger problem.

    Mr.Satori hope you read this and sorry for my bad English,
    From my point of view, and I always think that there is a big weakness in AI, which is when it comes to graphics, calligraphy and typography, artificial intelligence cannot do anything with this, because artificial intelligence depends on conversation and giving it words in order to apply what you want, but how can I modify or make fonts or typography with speech, is there something I can say to artificial intelligence in the manufacture of a certain type of Font and how to modify and modify its composition, and this also applies in graphics, there are about 70 percent of the works of art that we apply it can't have terms and words or names, even in character design, for example, I currently have in my mind a fictional character I want to design The rest of the description I can't say in words because what I draw in this fictional character is different, new and completely imaginary, and I can't describe it in terms or words, so how can artificial intelligence even affect the average artist, what about professional artists and designers ??

    Google trend, especially the one that doesn't show any change over time, doesn't say anything. For what it worth, it may be a direct result of the number of actual people who want to pursue this career plummeting & people who figured out that you can do graphic design with "AI" surging to take their place.
    Also the suggestion of being an entrepreneur in a time when it becomes increasingly easy to plagiarise other people marketing tactics( i think soon there will be one click youtube video "ai" remix), and where any 2d asset can be effectively remixed in "aI" for free. I mean, for what we know, every vector stock asset could've been already been trained on by adobe.

    Anyone that thinks AI will replace graphic designers does not understand graphic design. Tho AI will make graphic designers job easier when it comes to idea generation, image generation, certain graphics etc. But you need someone trained that can take all of this and make sense that fits the vision, the identity and the particular vibe and message of the company. That requires a brain capable of reasoning. Something AI does not have. That might change when AGI becomes a reality.

    I know I'm digressing, but I can't help but point this out.
    One discussion that I find unfortunate for new entrants to A.I is this constant nagging on what model is more "optimized" for task XYZ. And I don't mean stuff that is radically different such as performance with text.
    For example, in the case of "generating a professional email" one person nagged in discord "is mythos or Zephyr" better. It's unfortunate, because the differences ARE SO MARGINAL in that scenario.
    Point of my rant , folks. "Best results" have different standards for each person. Make the best of what the A.I offers you. It's only as good as Human input .
    If you're not gonna spend hours sitting and cobbling together a poster on photoshop affinity or gimp , then at least be prepared to spend hours fine tuning what the A.I gives you or patching it up through third party means.

    24) Department store employees - stand there most of the day for no reason

    As an in-house designer, I’ve seen what companies use in terms of AI generation, and ALOT of images on Amazon use their AI Image Gen tool, but designers still sus out if it’s a usable image (most of the time it isnt).

    Seems like a great tool to axe a lot of the ideation process tho, but at the cost of how much creativity.

    I will put it differently, graphic design (like a lot of other specialisations) is no longer a career path. Human activities in general (except some) comes and goes, this is in the nature of evolution. We can see this very clearly if we analyse the human evolution in the last, let's say 1000 years (or even the last 250 years, since the industrial revolution). The common theme is that the old jobs are constantly automated, as a result people are migrating toward activities with higher economic value. And that's the driving force of our exponential GDP increase in the last 250 years. So we should not fear, we should embrace the AI revolution. After all, we consider ourselves creative individuals, and if we are so, we should not be afraid, we will find a way. If we are not capable to reinvent ourselves, how we can expect our customers to think they can reinvent their businesses by hiring us. Just an opinion...

      @BobbyDecibel 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@OtstottDesign EXACTLY. All these designers that think they can't be replaced have obviously never worked somewhere where design is not top priority. Yes, some big companies will keep designers on but the small ones will eliminate them and those are the kind of companies MOST designers work for. Not everyone works for a Fortune 500 company. Hell, crowdsourcing was already taking a bite our of smaller projects and AI will make it worse.

    • @OtstottDesign
      @OtstottDesign 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BobbyDecibelBingo! For example, I work in the music industry, where I have worked with artists such as 50 Cent, Young Buck, Bubba Sparxxx, Conway, Cassidy, and many labels/agencies.
      But most of my client base are independent artists who find me after working with the bigger names. In just one year, I watched most of the smaller clients shift to using some AI program to create album art.
      Sadly, this behavior does not end in that branch. I also worked with local businesses and the common factor I learned in the 20 years of work is businesses/clients care mostly about turnaround time and cost.
      There will be AI businesses that will target our clients, offering in-house solutions much like many other services already out there. Graphic Design as we know it is in hospice.

    I mean, AI's a tool isn't it. It's great to brainstorm ideas, especially for fast-turnaround projects. Eventually, most artists will become AI-editors and will be able to spend more time on creative work imo

    • @rusucristian460
      @rusucristian460 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This is kind of wishful thinking. Image generating AI's appeared just a year ago and the evolution has been staggering. The problem with the idea of AI-editors is that the AI is evolving so fast that at some point there simply won't be a need for AI-editors - the tools and interface will be advanced enough for the clients to just use a service that automatically generates what they need. And given how fast it does evolve, I don't see how that won't be a reality in just a few years.
      And no, I have no idea what the solution for us designers will be. We are kind of screwed.

    • @filipparulski
      @filipparulski 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rusucristian460 Yeah, nah, I disagree. At least speaking from professional experience, you need a person who has a good eye, who has worked on different projects and who knows what kind of engagement a certain artwork will achieve. The clients will never touch the AI themselves, at least the ones with big budgets. Small budgets will leave these tasks for interns, ok, that might be true. Big brands that care about their image won't imo. I think a lot of jobs will move to more AI managerial roles, to supervise the vision and general direction of artwork.

    • @rusucristian460
      @rusucristian460 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@filipparulski I'm sorry but your argument works only if the AI somehow stops developing at some point. Its simple logic that if AI continues evolving at the rate it does now the editor job will be transitional at best. At some point convenient and cheap services will simply replace the editor job. And there are companies and tools already actively working to do so.
      Even if in big companies there will still be some ex-graphic designers now doing editing and 'supervising' that still doesn't speak or help the other 99% of designers who will be out of a job...

    • @filipparulski
      @filipparulski 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rusucristian460 Ok, let's entertain that this would be the case. I think this logic should be applied to both AI and people. People adapt and learn new skills. With the design skillset, it's not a far-fetched scenario that we would have more people going into 3D animation, video production, or another cousin-profession. I mean, a couple years ago an AI artist wasn't a thing, now look how many people made a career out of it. There will be always new jobs popping up as technology advances. People used to plough fields, then they used horses, now tractors or some other machines, but farming didn't die - it evolved. There's a demand, it's only the 'how' that's changing.
      And the key word here would be 'evolution'. It's slow. Companies adopting new tech take ages to do so. That gives people plenty of time to adapt to the new reality and the hypothetical 99% would never become obsolete overnight. In my opinion, it's gonna be an exciting process that will take a while to catch up with the wider market.

    • @GraphicDesignNY
      @GraphicDesignNY 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@filipparulski AI is making it possible for fewer people being needed to create a project. The fewer people needed, the more profit retained for the brand/company. That is the point of most technological progress. Learning AI does not take the same skill as a being an actual designer. So a glut of "prompt engineers" is very likely. And the fact that farming didn't die is not a strong argument. It takes less people today than it did 100 years ago to manage a farm, so there are less workers per farm. For the time being, the higher echelons of the design field are relatively safe. But as
      @rusucristian460 stated, there is an imminent thinning of the heard for mid and low tier designers.
