How Newcastle's INSANE 5-5-0 Formation Just Beat Arsenal

- Newcastle have one foot in the Carabao Cup semi-final after a shock 2-0 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates. But while they raced into an early lead with their customary attacking play, Eddie Howe made the decision to remove Alexander Isak, Anthony Godron, and Jacob Murphy, and instead play a 5-5-0 formation.
It could have backfired spectacularly but Adam Clery looks at why this unorthodox move was actually a masterstroke from the Newcastle manager.

"Because Isak plays for Newcastle 🤣🤣🤣" Great review Adam.
Absolutely loved that!
Yeah, as a Geordie it is great to remind arsenal and other clubs that Isak is ours.
I don’t like it. Isak is the best striker in the world right now but that’s precisely because we’re so much more than a one man team.
@bens4602 Of course but he is one of our stars
@user-cb4ym7cs2jfair enough. But can we please have him?
Greggs hoodie. Pokes fun at Arsenal for not having Isak. Mentions the handsomeness of Schar. Pretty much a perfect video, then.
Judging by his heatmap, Joe Willock on his own managed to play 4-4-2 in that first half
Yeah it only really became a 5-5-0 when almiron was subbed on
he was literally a ghost
'Galiba and Sabriel' got me 😂.
Same haha
“They had Kai Havertz up front because Alexander Isak plays for Newcastle” 😂👏👏👏
If Miggy's "🖐️!🖐!" gesture is the last thing he ever does for us it'll still go down as one of my all time favourite pieces of Newcastle United lore. Up there with Steve Harper's People's Elbow.
The only English I’ve ever seen him speak!
The Harper elbow 🤣 Tioteeeeeee
Or Solano’s free kick feint
-Or Ketsbaia kicking the advertising boards as a celebration
I know you love talking about Newcastle when it’s appropriate. Great win Adam
I can imagine the discussion 'Lads... I'm about to have an idea that might frighten you'
*Eddie opens the Steve Bruce little book of Tactics left from the bad old days *
'5-5-0. Let's do this properly, shall we?' XD
I said while watching the game to my mates, "Bruce would be proud"
He was an assistant coach of one of the most infamous managers known for his defensive game in Simeone😅
The big difference is Bruce did this for the full 90 minutes then would hope to steal an undeserved draw
@@camzo261.
@@simonn2045Bruce didn't have top players
"pornographic pass" please never change Adam😂🤣
"And Fabian Schar. Who's very handsome" 😅
He is to be fair
@@paulkearney6716 Can't argue with that!
Yeah, I spat my coffee at that. Haha.
Like he said, Adam only talks about facts.
He’s my wife’s only free pass.
I’m an Arsenal fan who lives in Newcastle so crossed paths with you somewhere along the way. Thanks for always providing insightful analysis that the broadcasters would benefit from rather than all the tired cliches they regurgitate.
arsenal fan also living in newcastle... loved this video and certainly cant complain because adam's given us our flowers when we deserved it too
Adam Cleary is just class. Love his vids
He talks too fast.

The Sexy Swiss getting the recognition he deserves lol
Miggy giving clear 5-5 signal to let Arsenal players and Arteta know tonight is not their night.
The "Headless Chicken" - Almiron - also introduces an element of randomness that can confuse the opposition as well as break up attacks and assist limited counter attacks. Bwaaaaaark !
we call it the "headless press"
Awesome video with some astute analysis. Howe has previously tinkered with Joelinton dropping into the backline when he recognises an overload (clever lad wor Joe). I think the addition of Tonali gives everyone more confidence to roam into other positions effectively, so I think we'll see more of Joe dipping back to solidify the defense. It also acts as a decent counter attack when he wins possession. 5-5-0 was pure Fifa madness - we love to see it. HWTL! Arteta's crying over the balls again.
Tonali is incredible. Watching his reading and positioning is a lesson to all players and fans. He’s the reason Dubravka and the defence has had ver6 little attempts on goal over the last seven matches.
The media are trying to spin this narrative that Arteta is blaming the ball for the loss which is utter BS. The reporter asked him a question about the ball and he answered it.
@gruffy4967 100% agree - he could be the difference between Europe for us. I can't wait until the 2nd leg!
The best defensive display I’ve ever seen. Dogged, determined. Centre backs were incredible. Centre mids were incredible. Most beautiful defensive masterclass out there. I didn’t even know it existed.
Are you mad? Arsenal had an xG of 3.76! Newcastle did give a lot of chances away, Arsenal was just rubbish in finishing.
@@jamesjasons1980martinelli through on goal, timber mistiming his header and not being able to get it down, and like 3-4 times where loads of scrappy shit happened in the box and we couldn’t put it in the net.
If we are being honest to say “defensive masterclass” is a bit silly, it’s just arsenal still having the same issue of not being able to finish goals from open play. Arsenal were the dominant team, created more chances and it wasn’t their night.
However, Newcastle had the 12th man with the fans, I was at the emirates and it was embarrassing how quiet the arsenal fans were. And also I’d like to say that every time Newcastle went forward they looked like they were going to score. They played really well putting clinical passes down the wings and playing the offside trap well, and there were some really good blocks and tackles on behalf of Newcastle.
Arsenal never should have started havertz, I feel like we looked like our heads weren’t in the game from the off, and going to st James park and getting 2 goals, I’m 90% sure will not happen.
I think this sums it up, from an unbiased arsenal fan.
@@Ardano62 Chances become very difficult with good defending. Get herded into worse shooting angles.
The only really massive chance Arsenal had was when Havertz shouldered the ball into the sky
@@jamesjasons1980right but because of us missing, and your goalkeeper not having to make a save that doesn’t make it a “defensive masterclass” that’s all I’m saying. In comparison to the way we defended yes you guys were a lot better, both goals are easily avoided which I think the bois will kick themselves at, but to say Newcastle outplayed arsenal just isn’t correct, I still think Newcastle in the end deserved the win.
@@jamesjasons1980Timber missed an open goal!
100% correct about Murphy and Isak's connection. They just fit each other perfectly. Reminds me of Shearer and Stuart Ripley in the Blackburn team. Stuart Ripley was a good player but never world class, but his crossing for Shearer was excellent and consistent. So many goals scored for Big Al because of Ripley. Long may it continue.
Can't tell you how much I enjoyed watching this. 😂 Genius! Adam you are to TH-cam what Isak is to Newcastle. 🎉
Dan burn is so flipping massive that he makes Joelinton look small and that’s just absurd to me
That intangible relationship among players is often overlooked.
The real tactics were the friends we made along the way
Brilliant analysis, amazing to see us defend so well.
These videos have come on in much the same way the team has in recent years. Top top work Adam, keep up the brilliant work
Great video Adam. Your analysis is great as always but your presentation was excellent today. Really engaging.
Full backs into the half space and wingers into the full back positions. It just stifles these guys.

Smashed like before watching as usual for new FourFourTwo video
Good to know it wasn't just me who did that
Enjoyed the whole thing, but particularly the The Big Show reference.
As a Scot, I’ve always been drawn to Newcastle as our Northern mates, so I’m equally delighted that Howe is at Newcastle, as I am he didn’t go to England.
(Tuchel is good, but Howe is excellent imo)
This video was class, mad facts, total understanding of the game and Newcastle got the win. 10/10
That shove by Isak was to make up for all the pushes Arsenal does during set pieces.
every team does it, it’s a contact sport.
And the WWE drag back on him in the first half
@mikem9309 lol. Aye Trossard give Isak an Irish whip into the turnbuckle.
every one does that
@@ramenotoko21 quite right. as Adam says - if you cant handle this sort of thing you're a big baby.
Gremio (🇧🇷), last season, couldn’t figure out who should play as the base. We ended up sacrificing Villasanti (Paraguay national team), who is a #8. The result was that neither the defense nor the offense could work properly. This video highlights how important is to have players in the right positions.
Well done Adam yet another 5star analysis, between you and Alice my post game football is amply taken care off.

Hi, who's that Alice you mention ?
@@jamesjasons1980 i'll check her out ! It's cool to hear more female analysts ! Thanks
Well you really enjoyed that one Adam and to be fair it was a fantastic performance. Wembley here we come !!
Marvellous. Best away performance since PSG. He earned his bacon yesterday. Up the toon. Let us get to the final.
Statue of Howe, now! With huge balls.
The best analyzer hands down! Congrats on your win! Newcastle has been really a tough team for us lately and I'm not all too sure we can turn this around and as matter of fact this trophy would mean more for Newcastle than for Arsenal.
Newcastle United have been absolutely mint, Eddie Howe is a tactical guru and Isak plays for the toon... Get in there⚽⚽
A push is one thing, dragging a player down by their wrist is another 😂
Great performance by Newcastle.
Brilliant analysis as always.
I love this analysis! Well put information!!
A remarkable performance. I'll be watching this analysis back for years! Thank you
Jacob Murphy is the most underrated player in the prem
Funny how Arsenal fans are so fussy about the Isak "push" on Odegaard when Havertz was pulling Hall down on that chance, Dubravka got bumped one another chance, and there's a third one where an Arsenal player was tackling a Newcastle defender that I can't name at the moment. Football fans truly have blinders when it comes to their teams.
Rice with the fore arm into the back of Tino,s head in the second half.
Or when trosdard or I think rice dragged a player by the hand
Haven’t seen a single person complain about Isak push. Stop making up enemies.
Really hasn't been a big deal anyway but we paint a narrative Arsenal make excuses
@ChidubeJOparayeah I'm sure Trossard grabbed Isak's arm with both hands to ya yank him back on the edge of the box mate
So happy for a new Four Four Two analysis and for how well Newcastle are doing.

Eddie has a great tactical transformation, Newcastle will go very far in their achievement this season.

Thanks again great analysis, happy new year to you all at FourFourTwo🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Eddie Howe is evolving this year, salute
Adam, you are a brilliant! Just love your videos and a perfectly accurate analysis and summary. My first game was 1974 and I have never seen a better team display defensively than this. There is respect from all other managers in the league for us, but the level of disrespect from Arteta every time we play them and this time about us "creating mayhem" for the 1st goal and the ball going to a "wrong player" is just laughable. "It's what they do" is also a common derogatory phrase he uses when speaking about us when alluding to our limitations technically.
It looked like his ass was falling out on the final whistle when walking to the tunnel.
It's not over of course but Eddie will not sit back at SJP (until we score that is!)
That pull on Isak was not even yellow card or free kick. Put Isak push Ödegaard and media go wild….
Great tactical analysis 10/10 vid
Adam nothing passes your eyes u r a talent
Class as always Adam
Howe is underrated. Doesn’t cause media drama and apparently gets along very well with the players.
I was waiting for this upload 😂
Not mentioning the Carabou Cup Matchball being a deciding factor in the result is a disrace, a digracia! 😂
Adam!? Adam!? How did I just find you on a WhatCulture video!? Naughty boy, getting yourself around 😂😂😂
Well Trossard's pull is a foul in front of the referee, whereas Isak's push is not a foul. They're not comparable.
Lol😅😅😅😅
Really like these analyses... and your never fading; "I have a cold"-look... :)
Excellent thread on how to expose your opponents. I think Saka would have a huge impact on the right for Newcastle more so than Isak playing for Arsenal?
Eddie & the boys did very well and deserve credit. They also had some luck, which both Burn and Howe insinuated. Tired legs, fatigue, and niggles made the 5-4-1 and 5-5 a smarter option than going for a wide-open game and potentially swapping goals with Arsenal. Great effort, but if the ball bounces differently at SJP in a month, the game could be 0-2 and then it goes to penalties. It ain't over, but the position is pretty damn nice!
Tbh no one in interviews brags so of course they will say luck, Newcastle had more reason to be tired, beating spurs and man u away and missing the captain, plus taming that God awful ball *wink wink* lol
@@BenLittle-n9o Ha. Right!
I like you, I don't know why but your just likeable and very knowledgeable about the game, great vid. Liked n subbed :)

That pass by Murphy for Isak for goal 2 was top tier
Done ever change Adam 😂😂😂😂 brilliant analysis and funny come on the Toon👊🏼
That clearly fits within the definition of push !
Can’t recall when was the last time Newcastle played with three left-footed centre backs.. but Howe has played five at the back before, with Joelinton dropping back, but his 5-5-0 was a proper tactical surprise.
Eddie Howe is currently the best manager in English football. He has taken a team bound for relegation to finishing top 7 3 consecutive seasons. If he gets one of the greatest escapes from relegation in history and 2 top 4 finishes in 3 and a half seasons that is fkn elite.
That Italia 90 man is quality man, that something you can buy nowadays? HWTL
Great analysis of this game love it.
in regards to wor Howe, to phrase a guy from an amazing movie "my boy is wicked smart". He knows what he is doing and he dismantled Arsenal on their home turf!
He dismantled Spurs and Man United at their turf earlier.
Waw, what an amazing analysis of the game.
Eddie parked the double decker bus.❤❤❤
Brilliant analyses!
Love it. Excellent analysis and decent comedy.
Love the quips in the vid haha. What people don't realise is that Isak has almost a Kane like pass in his locker. He comes deep for that pass into our wingers BUT, unlike Kane, he then uses his pace to get into the box, to get on the end of the return. Deadly.
Kane used to in his prime he's 32 now but isaks miles from Kane at the minute
@@kurthallimond8916 Did Kane used to drop deep in his prime?
@@Craig-g8r yes you not remember when everyone kept winning thousands on the kane and son return the favour? Son used to play as practically a second striker and kane used to ping balls over the defence and for England he plays as a central midfielder for 75 minutes which I think Southgate wanted as he looked more as a striker under carsley
@@kurthallimond8916 but he never had pace to then bust a gut and get on the end of a return. Kane has never been quick like that

Isak has become much better and stronger when receiving the ball, especially with his backmto goal, which had been his only weakness , imo, and talk of him leaving, I hope not, but i have a feeling maybe citeh or barca would pony up serious money for him, I think he is out of reach of any other team's
It's mad that Joelinton was bought as a striker, and now he's dropping in to be a makeshift CB
The beast of brazil
