- I have gotten a ton of fun ideas of things to do in the UK now that I have moved to Wales but one thing has been requested the most. St Fagans is a Welsh History museum that has 40 different houses that were build all around Wales in different points of history. They have taken these buildings and Re erected them on the 100 acre museum grounds. I had such a fun day exploring and learning about the history and culture of the Welsh people. I highly recommend a day trip if you get a chance.

I'd recommend the Yorkshire Dales. The area around Appletreewick is great. Also, Cornwall, Bath, York, and Whitby are my favourites.

The National Arboretum at Westonbirt is is like Bute Park on steroids, and well worth a visit. It's in a nice area of the country as well (even though it's in England).

The Big pit welsh mining museum is not to far and is an amazing visit, also don't miss out on Cardiff Castle
Yes and if you wish you can go down in the left to the coal seams .With a guide who are usually were miners , and its well worth doing . It is free like all museums in Wales .

Just visited Snowdonia in Wales and wow it’s quite awesome
The grounds and the manor house were built on the site of a 13th century castle, hence retaining the word "castle" (castell, in Welsh) in the name. Places built on the sites of previous castles or fortifications often retain "castle" in their names - Newcastle and Castleford, for example.

I entirely agree, Tony. I would also add that land-owners who liked grandiose houses also liked to label them "castles" because it had more kudos. The point of a castle is it is a defensive structure (and aggressive if it houses an army safely, enabling it to go forth to attack at times). US forts in the US Cavilery v native Americans were similar - save they were made of wood (as British castles were originally). The most recent castle to be built in Britain was castle Drogo in devon (England - just below Wales) in the 1920s but it, too, is "merely" a very large residence with no military role.
I’m so proud to be a Welsh, I love my language and my culture. It is so important to me.. I go to St. Fagans on most of my school trips.
Next time you're in Cardiff you neeeeeeed to go down Cardiff Bay. My fiance is from Dallas and he came over to visit back in June 2021 and he loved it when I took him. It's much better on a spring/summers day but it's still nice this time of year. If you go when it's warmer you can get some amazing icecream, check out the ferris wheel, the Millennium Centre is a gorgeous building, there's boat tours you can take which don't cost too much I think they're around £8 a person. Lots of super nice cafe's and restaurants, statues and memorials. Honestly it's just a nice day out!
Cardiff bay is beautiful. There’s a little Norwegian church down there too
Hi I live in Cardiff too, literally 10 min from At Fagans, but when the weather is better go to Penarth Pier, in Penarth.

Beamish is a similar museum in North East near Durham / Newcastle and well worth a visit
And it’s FREE to visit! You could easily spend a day there. Locally go inside Cardiff Castle and/or Castell Coch (fairytale castle) near Cardiff. Both fabulous interiors.
You have to buy entry tickets to Castell Coch and Cardiff Castle full tour.

St Fagan's Castle looks very familiar as has appeared in many films and TV series'. "Poldark" is one that springs to mind. Living Museums are found all over the UK and are a godsend to film and TV producers looking for period, unmolested buildings and interiors. They also pay handsomely.and the museum gets a mention in the credits.

I guess thats good for the museum as they survive off of donations to keep everything going.
You need to head to Cardiff Bay, lovely walk, lots to see and learn about. Also Caerphilly Castle is another good day out....easy train ride there. xx
Yes!!! Both are on my list. I think the castle is only open on the weekends and the bay is better explored on a sunny day. : )
St Fagans is one of the first stops that I bring American friends when they visit us here in Cardiff along with Big Pit , the castle and the bay.
It's great to see you walking past all the picnic spots I've used over the years! My favourite is by the stepping stones near the beginning of the video. Beautiful spot in the summer.
I haven't seen anyone suggest Llancaich Fawr. It's about an hour away near Merthyr Tydfil but if you like 'living history' like this then it's perfect. It's a civil war era manor and all the people working there are in costume and in character for that area. Really good fun. It's also supposed to be one of the country's most haunted buildings and in the autumn and winter it does night time 'ghost tours'! I've been at Halloween a few times. Well worth the trip!
It would be so interesting to live in any of those homes but especially the castle since it probably has some form of modern plumbing. lol! They all look so cozy with their antique furnishings. The general store is such a neat glimpse into the past and how nice to be able to shop for gifts in the smaller shop. The woolen mill has got to be the coolest of all. Of course, I highly doubt that way back when the old fashioned methods were the only option for making clothes the people having to do all the work really thought it was all that great but it is really impressive that they still make their woolens by using a spinning wheel.
I agree. I loved the Woolen Mill. There something about it. Kinda wholesome.

St. Fagans has been on my must visit list for ages. Will try and get there this year. Bit far from London for a day trip but as there is so much to explore in the Cardiff area, I'll spend a few days enjoying this city.
Whenever we want to spend a few days with my daughter and her family in Cardiff, my husband and I book into a Premier Inn just outside Cardiff - only costs around £60 a night for the two of us plus breakfast.
Since we retired, we've been travelling all over the country using budget hotels like Premier Inn or Travelodge as our base for exploring the area for few days - it works out so much cheaper than anything else - They always have buffet style breakfasts, so we have a full cooked breakfast and make up a 'doggy bag' of some of the cold options on offer (muffins, yoghurt, apples etc...) to keep us going until dinner in the evening - and there's always plenty of free parking.

Visited St Fagans many times over the year, though usually in summer. There is so much to see there that you need to go more than once!!
I agree. So many people asked if I went to the bakery and I couldn't because it was closed. A perfect excuse to go again.

Love places like this where you can find out about how people lived at different times in history. The grounds were absolutely beautiful 😍
Beautiful and HUGE. I have been to one other museum like this in Sweden. Same concept of bringing houses/buildings from all around the country to one place. I enjoyed both experiences so much.
Take a trip on a steam railway. The Welsh Highland Railway from Porthmadog to Caernarvon Castle, the Ffestiniog Railway also from Porthmadog, or the Snowdon Mountain Railway that takes you to the top of Wales' highest mountain. You won't be disappointed!

We love going here and have been many times over the years. I have always loved your style of documenting the places you go too and telling us all about the history etc. I’m not sure how easy it would be to get to but Dan Y Ogof caves are amazing! Castell Coch I’m certain you would love visiting. Big Pit Mining museum and Carleon Roman ruins etc there’s lots to see and do plus Wales as you probably know, have a ton of castles. Might be worth looking into a Cadw yearly membership and national trust yearly membership to enter these places for free. Take care xx
so glad you went there. there are loads of suggestions in the comments and i madde a few in a previous video, but when the summer comes please go to see the warefalls between penderyn (my parents village) and glyneath. if you like walks in the countryside you will love thaem i promise. good luck with your adventures

Lovely video Ashley. Thank you for sharing. Thats one place I have not I have not been too. St Fagan’s Museum is certainly worth a visit. We have a similar museum close to where we live in Staffordshire called the Black Country Museum.

It’s called St Fagans Castle as there used to be a medieval castle on the site that then became the Manor House. Some of the castle walls still remain there today.

Enjoyed the video Ash. If you want to do the beaches two suggestions in South Wales. Firstly the Pembrokeshire coast. Tenby is magical ...but Saundesfoot, Newgale and a host of numerous beaches are wonderful. Closer is the Gower Peninsula (Swansea). Three Cliffs Bay and Rhosilli are dramatic. But there is a nice walk from Langland Bay to Caswell Bay....30 min walk by the cliffs ...cafes on both sides. A warm sunny day you might want to swim...Fab. An aside, if you ever want to be treated at Marco's cafe beach front to a cappachino and Ice cream, my lady Julie and I are more than happy to entertain you and your partner! Can show you around Barry. Have watched your videos since the Way away and always enjoyed. Hope you find happiness in God's own country! Pob lwc.... Chris.

I have been to St Fagans Natural Museum of History yesterday. It was big and beautiful! I could not see some buildings in your video. Next time I hope I can see them. 😄👍
a castle will normillay have fortifications ie defences built in to it, the Manour house at St Fagans still has some of the fortifications remaining from the original castle that was on that site so it can still be called a castle as it is still fortified.
With the arrival of gunpowder castles became obsolete during Tudor times it became the fashion to build more comfortable & less Draughty Manor Houses with Chimneys & Glass windows many castles were either modernised or left to ruin with much of the dressed stone used for the new build the same was the fate of the Monestaries during the Dissolution.
In North Wales near Conway is Penrhyn it is a Victorian Art-Deco Castle similar to but larger than Castel Coch (Red Castle)near Cardiff all built on profits from two kinds of Slavery Sugar & Slate both this & the Medieval town & Castle of Conway are well worth a Visit.
Love going there such a relaxing day out, never gets boring! I live in England now but always took my kids there and I'm now taking my grandkids there when we go home!!! It's a great insight into cultural and social changes in Wales over the years! Hope you tried the bakery!
Check out the Forest Of Dean.there's a house there called Littledean Hall.(might not be open to the public anymore,but me and my wife seriously felt a ghost there in 1990.even took a picture which looked like swirly veils in front of us, and a throttling sensation round our throats!

The Mumbles. Oxwich Bay. The Worm's Head. The land leading down to the beach at the Worms head still has the original neolithic field layout. That's around five thousand years...

Try the Weald and Downland Museum in Sussex. It has acquired fame on TV as the site of the barn used in 'The Repair Shop'.

Great video thx Ashley...one of my favourite museums ..I live just up the road & I'm so glad other people suggested it too...mostly summer time they have lots of events happening too...& Lots of the places have been used to film Dr who ...my son loved going around spotting them all ...was the bakery open ?..lovely bread & cakes for sale usually.

Ash if you look at the start of the video you can see the original castle walls around the manor house. There were several castles all around Cardiff & the Vale. There are ruins in all sorts of weird places.
I would definitely recommend the museum in the city centre. They do amazing exhibitions. There also used to be a ghost tour of Cathy's cemetery - that was spooky!

I need to visit st fagans again, I built a staircase for a church there a couple of years ago and I haven't checked it out yet
While not directly related to this video, I think you would find the series on TH-cam by Geowizard were he attempts to walk across the whole country of Wales in a straight line very, very entertaining. Their is some potty mouth, but one of the most treacherous parts was when Farmers would get upset about them walking through the fields....that's why I was so surprised to learn from you that many of the walking paths in Wales go through farmers fields. I learned a ton about the geography of Wales by watching that video. You could even do a reaction video to it :)

I'm trying to plan a multi day costal walk around the Gower. I just have to wait for the weather to get a bit nicer for an outdoor trek like that.

Awesome to see you explore St Fagans. My personal suggestion would be to also return in the summer when it’s fully open. It’s a lot more of a tourist attraction but when fully open it almost has a small town feel to it. Completely agree with the love for properties that have a history of their own and that is definitely one of the most magical part of St Fagans.
Highly recommend a trip to Dan Yr ogof caves for some welsh history 😊
Castle comes from the Spanish "Castilla" meaning homestead. any home can be an Englishman's Castle and he can defend it to the death by law

Hi Ash, great to see you enjoying Wales. I haven't been in some years but it is my favourite place to travel to. Adding to all the fabulous recommendations, I'd say for a very close destination, go to Penarth. It is easy to reach from Cardiff by bus and is a nice little coastal town. If you want to venture a little bit further, the Brecon Beacons are just lovely, cannot recommend them enough. Hay on Wye is a great place to visit there, especially if you love books.

Ash, you should visit Castell Coch if you haven't already, it's such a beautiful place and it's like being inside a fairy tale! We went there just recently and fell in love with the castle. Really enjoyed watching this and loving your journey so far in Wales. All the best !

Ironbridge Shropshire World Heritage Site and home to the Industrial Revolution
Your in one of my favourite places it’s worth a visit on a food & drink festival, the row of cottages I used to play in them as a child before they moved them! Here’s a few places that are definitely worth visiting, Castle Coch, Dyffryn Gardens, Cardiff Castle, Big Pit, Dan yr ogof show caves, Brecon Beacons and the waterfalls, and I also suggest checking out Cowbridge it’s a market town it’s got some lovely shops & places to eat.. I realllly think you will LOVE Llandudno and the Great Orme if you choose to visit there! The train up to the top has stunning views!
I really think it would be cool to see you visit and re-visit so many of the castles there as there are hundreds of them! Over 600 to be exact for Wales! (That's a lot of Content if ya know what I mean lol)

@@WingingItWithAsh I would never get tired of seeing them! Each one is different as well as the stories behind them.
My family and I learned that we can even enjoy a ruined castle just as much as a fancy, fully restored one. You get to explore all the left behind nooks and crannies! However, with many of the show castles you might only be able to visit by tour and then are restricted to only certain rooms of the castle. Either way, when it comes to castles, I love them all!
