I love how Gloria is a refreshing aversion of the "Wicked Stepmother" trope. Rather than being characterised as cartoonly evil and hating her stepchildren, Gloria is nothing but benevolent to Jay's family, plus Claire and Mitchell are roughly around her age.
One of my favorite 2nd wives in real life I'd Barbara Lewinsky, Monica's stepmom. She stuck out to ne because her aesthetic seemed more sporty 90s mom than Marcia Lewis's (Monica's mother) glamorous presentation but both moms were supportive and protective of Monica. Pictures I looked up of Barbara showed her shielding her stepdaughter from nasty paparazzi and she called out Bill Clinton as a butthead for everything.
I have a soft spot for 2nd wives who are less stereotypically glam or older (Barbara looked more like she was old enough to be Monica's mom than Marcia) or less privileged (Gloria was a single mom from a working-classneighborhood) than the first. I was surprised to find out Kamala Harris is slightly older than Doug Emhoff's first wife, especially as he was an entertainment lawyer.

This made me think of how second husbands are portrayed. Usually the main character is the first husband but the woman takes the kids and gets with a man who is more financially stable and acts very mature and fatherly. But this is often portrayed as the second husband emasculating the first husband who is the main character and the man the audience is rooting for. Then the first husband engages in schemes to win the wife or kids back. It's like promoting toxic loser fathers.
That's why I liked how Miranda in Mrs. Doubtfire didn't end back up with Daniel. It was a really believable relationship.
Or how the second husband is killed off in the story so that the first husband can swoop in.
I hate the stereotypes of the 1st husband. It's really toxic and sexist towards men.

My favorite depiction of the second husband is the one from Freaky Friday (2003). He reassures the mother (who is actually the daughter) that he understands he’ll never be able to replace their deceased father, but instead is allowing their daughter to warm up to him whenever she’s ready on her terms, attempting to integrate into the family properly with respect to the kid’s memory of their lost parent. We need more depictions of positive male/father roles like this.

Also... Gloria was such a wonderful mother to Manny. She always supported him so he could express himself the way he wanted. And when Jay sometimes critzises Manny's behaviour for not being "masculine enough", Gloria immediately puts him straight.
She didn't support Manny, she did pity him. She saw him as less just because he doesn't engage in male coded hobbies. She always shits on his poems behind his back, but could never tell him in his face

I love Gloria so much. What I love about her is that she doesn't hid the fact that she married Jay for his money but it doesn't take away the fact that she truly love Jay.

That's a prejudice and mean to the parent. If you have a parent that actually loves you, works/ed to make your life better, and isn't abusive... the best version of you would celebrate their new found happiness. Age gaps are not inherently problematic, and it isn't right to condemn people just for finding love in a way that you (arbitrarily) don't like. As long as everyone involved is of age, it's morally perfectly fine. And if you're going to respond with anecdotes or sweeping generalizations, don't bother.
I don't think it matters people just want to hate the second husband or wife and blame them for why their parents are not together.
Yeah, it has to do with the idea that an age gap relationship is intrinsically abusive and that a young woman with an older man is always either a golddigger taking advantage of an older guy or a predatory man going for a naive innocent girl so an odler child may feel uncomfortable cause they feel like those are the options. In reality as long as they're both consenting adults there's no reason why the relationship have to be unhealthy and if they're happy with each other there really isn't a reason why they can't work together
Gloria was also a great insight on Latinas in a predominately white space/family. My mom is Latina (Spanish is her second language), everyone, including my siblings and I, see how alike she is to Gloria.
Gloria's line "you don't even know how smart I am in Spanish" made me understand and see my mother in a new light

Hi! I think I can answer that. I speak 4 languages, but Mexican Spanish is my native language.Regular communication in another language is easy,but when Im in a heated argument I'll stumble to express a concept that has no direct translation (e.g. 'extrenar'-to wear clothing or use something for the first time,with anticipation) . So whole I stumble for the correct word in my argument, the listener will think I'm slow or stupid, even if my ideas are valid.The monolingual will perceive the careful polyglot as stupid even if that is not the case.
Because of fluency, I sound smarter conversing in Spanish & English than with native German speakers.
What I love about Jay and Gloria's relationship is that they both aren't ashamed of the fact that Jay is rich and Gloria is beautiful. Which some people may view as gold-digging and marrying a person for beauty or whatever. Those traits are just what brought them together, but their true love for each other is what keeps them together. Gloria isn't the stereotypical second wife who marries for money usually, she's a hardworking, immigrant, single mother who doesn't use her beauty to take advantage or use people. Whereas Jay is hardworking and rich, but he's not scared to share it with Gloria, Manny, and their relatives.
Jay knows the hardships that Gloria and Manny went through in their lives, which is why Jay spoils both of them and doesn't limit them. He willingly gives, rather than the stereotype that the second family always takes. Jay gives Gloria the affection and pampering that she deserves. While Gloria gives Jay the space to open up and be vulnerable and speak about his feelings. They both bring something into the table, which is what makes them perfect for each other.

But, in the season Joe was born, Jay said in his speech at the christening that they met while he was getting his car washed or something like that then he went to a cafe I think then heard Sonya talking and he sent over a pie, but it was Gloria who went to Jay and thank him. I'm not saying they got together because of those traits what I meant was that those are the main traits that attracted them to each other. But Jay's stability and Gloria's loving nature among their many traits are what made them fall in love. The money and beauty were just the initial attraction.

That I didn’t have to translate what came to me naturally. It’s seriously so important. My mother had experiences of being judged as less intelligent due to her accent too.
That speech Gloria gave about how intelligent she is in Spanish really hit home for me. I speak a second language and always understood those feelings, both directions, but it really put it into words for me that helped a lot.

@@SB-xs1pn those two suffer the most but actually all the characters are stereotypes and archetypes. But that's not a bad thing I mean it's a sitcom. It's also subverting in a way for example when they suprise the audience with character traits which no one could have guessed as Jay liking dog shows and Cam being a rugby player/teacher. But it doesn't change the fact that modern family characters are tropes you have seen earlier. Dumb funny dad? Strict mom? Lonely nerds?

I love how Gloria never shamed her son for his non traditionally masculine or weird interests. We need more of that in our cultures (American and Latin/Hispanic).
As an introvert, I don’t seem to have a lot of common with her at first, but I still relate to her so much! ❤️
Actually she did shame him for it. She wishes for him to be more traditionally and interested in typical male hobbies. She even wanted him to party around because she is tired of his poems.
I think we can cut her some slick because there's an episode where she doesn't want to tell him this. She may not like his lifestyle but she doesn't want to hurt him or force him to change which is a kind of support
@@hassanalkhalaf1115 I've seen a lot of the show and Gloria overall supports Manny like crazy in everything. She obviously isn't perfect but even when she was annoyed at Manny's poems it was for good reason, he basically harassing the girls at his school with them. It was also just a joke for the episode, Manny is self confident despite not being typically masculine because of how much Gloria hypes him up no matter what.

I absolutely love Gloria's character! She is so dynamic and vibrant. One of my favorite moments is when Jay is talking to Joe while he's still in the womb and he says "By God, I hope you gain your mother's confidence". Their love for each other is genuine and so amazing to see. I also love the moment when Gloria confronts a snooty hostess and after they get kicked out of the restaurant, they find a taco truck and sing Jay's favorite song together with the adult kids. It is so sweet.
Gloria Pritchett is the stepmother I wished I had! She's very sharp, very smart and has a carefree attitude to life whilst being a proud, fierce, loving, brave mother to both Manny and Joe.
She is also very caring to Claire and Mitch and I love that so much!

Gloria Pritchett is the mother I wish I had. Or stepmother (but I don't wish my dad to any woman: he's an abusive controlling and manipulative 455h073).
Another thing I want to point out given how Gloria is regarded as a threat: there is thing and it can appear as pearl clutching, in real life where often white Anglo women react negatively to non Anglo and poc women expressing their sexuality (Mary J Blige, J. Lo, Shakira at the Super Bowl, the Hot Girl Summer backlash) often as threatening to children, causing low self esteem in women their age, like Jennifer Weiner's essay about being a Dorothy in a world where Blanche isn't hot anymore. A commenter on Jezebel said this in regards to the article:
"Black and Brown women don’t necessarily buy into the 'I am invisible post 40 years old, woah is me' thing. Go to any backyard BBQ in the ‘hood in the summer time and you’ll see Black and Brown moms and even grandmas in short shorts and tank tops looking cute as hell. They may not look like JLo, of course, but they do have no issues with feeling sexy and sharing that with the world."

You know I am glad that stepmoms are not the villain as much as they used to.
There are many blended family stories where the second wife is not the automatic villain but an integral part of the family.
I cannot think of a lot of examples right now, but a recent one is “over the moon”. The father’s new fiancé was not an antagonist or a villain. She tried making sure she get along with his daughter and show her newfound love for her. I like how it was just the daughter adjusting because she was not ready to let go of her mom and her traditions, but she warmed up to her new family members while keeping her mom in her heart.
I know there are more examples of this, but they are not coming to mind right now.

I liked how she and Juno’s dad supported her and did not judge her. They still guided and disciplined her, but that is what parenting is. She also did not favor one kid over the other which was nice too.
elon musk's first wife has said before that she actually liked his second wife (Tallulah Riley). I think she really played an important role in taking care of their 5 sons...
Just look at how Carol Brady treated her stepsons. She was seen as their mother even though she wasn't.
i just love when gloria describes helicopters using the sound "takatakataka" and when she says "please come back" after sending claire a rude email lol. shes so funny yet an icon
In Latin America it's very common to use onomatopoeia whenever the moment requires it. For example, people on Hispaniola (where I'm from) like to use "kehekehek" to represent a coughing sound. It's little details like that that make me appreciate an actually Latina actress playing Gloria, as opposed to someone ethnically ambiguous who can get away with pretending. All the little nice touches of Sofia's heritage make Gloria more authentic.
Another great thing about Gloria (or their depiction of her) is that she's unashamedly who she is, she's allowed to be sexy and confident, whilst also being a great mum, whilst also appreciating money or looking good. None of these things are used to vilify her, in the way they coincide with manipulation in Meredith Blake or Fiona from A Cinderella Story.
deedee isn't an example of "the crazy ex-wife" tho, her kids couldn't stand her because she was a toxic mom

@@hassanalkhalaf1115 Yeah Claire was the daddy's girl and Mitch was the mama's boy.
Even though what we see is for comedic effect, and I don't take away both Deedee's and Jay's toxic behaviour during their marriage, most of their problems seemed to be related to how much they struggled financially. I got the impression that Deedee didn't so much hate Gloria for being the second sexy wife, but more like she was living the life she hoped to live with Jay, without money issues.
You can see those things come up in metions like how Deedee had to make due in the house and the most special thing she could do for Jay was buying the nice bread to make him a sandwich, or when Jay had to cut short a vacation, take a second job to pay his workers at Prichett's Closets. It's hard to admit, but financial problems can tear a couple down really hard.
These are also things that Claire and Mitchell wouldn't pick up and by the time they were adults, wouldn't go thru those situations. Jay made the down payment for both their houses, for example.

As a second wife with an age gap with my partner, I consider Gloria one of the few (if not the only) fictional characters in media I can actually relate to in that aspect. I love my stepkids SO MUCH and they love me back, and we always talk about how we’re still unfairly portrayed in fiction, even though divorces are a super common thing nowadays and getting remarried or living together with someone else after having kids is no longer atypical. Disney is responsible for like 75% of that damage, and I’m still waiting for them to make a movie with a healthy stepmom-stepkid relationship. THEY OWE US THAT.

Though I am really happy for you that you have an amazing relationship with your step kids unfortunately evil step parents do exist. My mom had a terrible stepmom and it sucks that her stepmom was the reason I never got to meet my grandpa.
Disney didn’t make up most of their movies but, are a retelling from past fairytales that have evil stepmoms. Though they are sanitized. Still I would love to see more shows and movies with a great stepmom. I think Disney’s enchanted sort of counts. I grew up watching the Nanny and that one main character becomes a great stepmom to her kids.
@@moondivine2288 of course they do. And evil PARENTS exist too! but those will never be represented in media made for kids. Because patents are usually the ones who pay for them to see those movies.
Elaine Hendrix who played Meredith Blake in 1998’s “The Parent Trap” was slaying it ❤️🔥 ! That scene in the hotel elevator, wearing classic cocktail dress, cross strap in the back, perfectly coiffed hair, her toned body… I saw that at 10yrs old and would fantasize about being all grown up sophisticated looking like that 🤣😂🙌🏽🙌🏽 Sis was killing it!

My partner and I are both Latino, but I was raised speaking Spanish and he wasn't. Hes finally been learning (he was scared for a long time bc he had that identity struggle of looking brown but being shamed for not knowing Spanish) and I'm so excited he can speak to my Papi more and I'm really happy he's going out of his comfort zone to connect to his roots and connect to my family better too like it's so meaningful man

Anglo white people aren’t gonna see you as white, and latin americans born/raised in latin america don’t see you as latino. I love Gloria not only because she’s an amazing character but also because usually step moms are portrayed very negatively. My own step-mom is the sweetest kindest person ever and I love her. Gloria makes me feel represented.

I think it's a pity that they villainized DeDe that much by making her such a bad mother to Mitch and especially Claire. Because her perspective is actually pretty valid. It is pointed out many times that her and Jays marriage was very unhappy and they made each other miserable. But the point is, she was once a young wife, too, very in love with her husband and with the best intentions to make the marriage work. But it is also made clear that one reason she turned so bitter was that Jay was unable and unwilling to really care about her needs. One reason is of course that he worked is a** off to get finacial stability for his family and therefore wasn't around much, but he also never learned and never saw the need to learn to validate her feelings. She spent her best years in an unhappy marriage. And then, while she still struggles to find a new perspective on life, he happily moves on and becomes the husband and father she probably always wished him to be, but to someone else. I think they did a good job to show how her resentment towards Gloria was fueled by this complicated feelings and it was not so much Gloria, but her having to come to terms with her own life choices.

Also as a child with a horrible parent, the least they can do is die and leave you some fvcking money, what does Jay do? Make a new family and a kid so now his old kids don't get anything, they got a crappy childhood and now nothing because it'll all go to the new shiny family

Jay and Dede talk things out, recognize their problems and make a point to apologize to their kids for their behaviors in an episode in the later seasons. Also after we see Dede's last husband its revealed how she was problematic in that marriage too. just human things...
While Gloria played into some tropes she also averted plenty of them. Very refreshing
can you do the overprotective parent trope ? these are the types that go to extreme measures to interfere with their son or daughter's dating choices .

Yes! Hopefully it will sympathize with the children though and not just bash the kids like most videos that talk about overprotective parents on TH-cam.

Yes but what is overlooked it that in a lot of cases a second wife is a result of cheating (which wrecks the first marriage) and then the acceptance of the second wife into the family gets a lot harder.
i loved how she also portrayed being an immigrant and in a blended family. like when her son was born and grew up to look just caucasian and she felt like she was loosing her cultural heritage. i think these are real issues that are not discussed often

I had a stepmother that i loved. And i was a teenager (very angsty and annoyed with the world) my dad didnt end up staying with her, but in many ways we ended up being more alike than my mother and i and because she wasnt as closely related i was able to be more open with her. I am definitely glad modern family ended up showing a different angle on the trope because it really concerned me as a kid that on tv girlfriends/ second wives were so generally hated. I thought something was wrong with me. But in reality, something is wrong with a media that keeps perpetuating the stereotype.
She's not only out of his league, it's like a whole different sport altogether. Same thing on "married with children," no offense to the actor, but it just undermines any kind of "suspension of disbelief."
The older husband with a younger second wife is a pretty tired trope. Kind of a sexist double standard also
I hate that the younger wife always has to be a bombshell while it’s okay for the guy to be fat and old while contributing only slightly to the relationship. Gloria deserves a much better man as he was also racist to her heritage sometimes.
@@vhilofaye1618 they were compatible in many ways, including how they often teased each other, and when he takes it too far she corrects him. People make mistakes, people mess up. Good people recognize this and are open to criticism when they're in the wrong, which Jay usually does.
Not just older husband. You got all kinds of "average" men on tv, while wives are still hot. Take your pick: The Simpsons, The King of Queens, According to Jim... The Take even has a video that kind of tries to justify it.
At least in Modern Family there's a point to it. She is in it for the money, she is a foreigner. It's believable and it's discussed within the show. But in a show like The Simpsons, you are kind of asking what Marge gets out of this marriage really and the answer is: not much.
I don't think it's tired tropes exist because they happen in real life at times just like how there are older women with younger partners

Honestly, people need to spend less time worried about other people's love life. Unless a relationship is abusive and someone needs genuine help... Butt out! It's none of your business. I had a bad break up a couple of years ago and I watched as our friends picked "sides", passing judgment when in fact, no one knows what goes on between two people. Do what makes you happy!
Kids also don't get to decide their parent's love life, especially as adults. I hate the second wife trope and I'm glad it's starting to change.
I LOVE Gloria. Just when you think she's a stereotype, she shows you she's also a clever, funny, wise, loving badass. I also like how she became close to the family more like in a sister and aunt sort of way. I actually really enjoyed her relationships with the other family members.
Gloria and Jay have always been my favorite characters. I'm touched by their love and respect for one another and how Gloria is not only enhancing the family's life but how they are enhancing hers. Before it was she and Manny against the world. Now she has a family that has her back. She likes and respect who she is and that self esteem lets her be more open to other people. She doesn't try to change Jay but instead shows him that he was the guy all along. He just needed someone to give him a nudge. Gloria's looks may be what attracted him in the first place but he saw that her beauty was the least of her wonderful traits. Love how the show took an ancient trope and breathe new life in it by turning it on it's head.
Jay doesn’t deserve her love at all. Not because he is old but because he was racist to her heritage so many times and barely put any effort for the relationship. Gloria worked 90% for the marriage while Jay only worked just 10%.

I know a second marriage can work. My late uncle married his second wife (both them were divorced) and she is a loving mom, stepmom, grandma, and step-grandma. My uncle's first wife was a horrible person, even to their daughters, and my aunt's first husband was a violent drunk.

Meh, they still made the First Wife look bad. She doesn't move on, she's bitter. As long as the First Wife is made to look like the wrong choice, I don't care what the Second Wife does. Modern Family went out of their way to make the First Wife crazy and a stereotype, so it doesn't matter how "progressive" they made the Second Wife when the First is still treated like shit. You say that First Wives don't have to look good at the expense of Second Wives, but In Modern Family Second Wife is made to look good at the expense of the First.

If the first wife wasn’t the wrong choice, why would they be divorced? Come on now. People divorce because they don’t fit. And that’s the case here. I appreciate that in Modern Family they show that dede and jay struggled financially a lot and that this was one of the reasons why their marriage wasn’t that happy. They were both frustrated with each other and that’s okay. In the beginning dede seemed like the crazy first wife but you get to know her and her struggles a bit more later on in the show. And I mean this is still a sitcom. There will always be traces of stereotype writing..
Talking about second wives and new families, the Disney+ Cheaper by the dozen really deserves a Take. I had no expectation, but in many regards the remake managed to match and/or surpass the original. This movies was funny, heartwarming, modern and have important conversations. I strongly recommend.
In Ranking of Kings, Queen Hiling initially comes off as your typical evil stepmother. However, they subvert expectations as she’s just overprotective since the main character is deaf.

Elaine Hendrix who played Nick’s girlfriend in the parent trap made an excellent video a few years ago, also re-imagining the ‘second wife/younger girlfriend trope’. She argued that she in fact was good for Nick. As a business woman she could have revitalised his entire wine business and bring into the 21st century. And was entirely justified in her anger towards the twins. They literally tried to get rid of without even trying to get to know her. So what if she wanted to send them to boarding school, she wanted to start a new life with her husband😂😂😂😂😂It’s a really good watch and hilarious.

She is justified in being upset with them but, she’s an adult. They’re kids. They don’t know how to maturely react to this situation, it’s the parents job to be understanding, help them through the process, and teach them how to react. She is becoming a part of the family. He has to parent his kids and help them accept the changes. If she wants to be a part of the family so does she.

I lost count on how many times I've rewatched the show. I just recently finished binging 2 seasons. The comedy still slaps and Gloria is an absolute gem. I'm not Latina but some of her customs/cultures are still relatable and it's so refreshing to see it on screen. Love that she's all the tropes and proves them wrong at the same time.

I'm from a family that had this same dynamic with a difficult but loving mother but also an amazing stepmom who is 2 years younger than me. This show was refreshing because of the standard trope of 2nd wives being awful or greedy being shown in a very different way.
Imma write a book where the first wife moves on and finds happiness on her own without being shrewd or bitter.
I LOVE Gloria! She is very strong and at the same time very loving and generous! My favorite character in the show.
As much as I love Gloria, she is an absolutely BEST CASE scenario. Most men Jay's Age even with the success and money, will simply not find a woman that is well rounded and put together that will be into an older man in the most sincere and genuine sense. When it does happen though, she is a GOOD example of it going right.
When Jay worries about where he’s buried and if Gloria is going to be buried with them and he’s like I know you’re going to remarry and she goes no I’m not you’re it and it’s just so sweet

Elements of Gloria's personality do follow the stereotypical Spitfire but that doesn't mean that's all she's is but they are times in the show were that part is exaggerated a little to much making it seem like that's all that she is. Especially considering that unfortunately most Latin women are portrayed as that in the media but that's just my opinion.

I love Gloria, but I never felt the show convinced me that she and Jay were "in love", just like buddies always arguing. Jay just never seemed the right guy for her and the writers were never able to bridge that gap for me, as they seemed more interested in the comedy of their differences than ahowing where they connected! I kept waiting for the last season to fix that, but nope. Gloria does a lot for him and his family, but other than providing "stability", what does Jay really offer her? 🤷♀️
He accepts her, her family and her culture with an open heart, and an open mind. He makes her laugh, challenges her, showers her with affection. When she needs something done or someone to support him (even if he and Manny don't think she's very gifted) he always comes through even if he doesn't feel like doing anything. He understands she had a hard life and a rough upbringing, so he tries to not show how scared he is of her sometimes and showers her with gifts and love.

Gloria gave me Nanny Fine vibes since day one. Both are great characters, very unique and refreshing. Always telling their truth, open about how they feel and very charismatic with a strange voice, I really enjoy to hear, since they are both very entertaining characters with so much love to give

Jay’s rugged Vietnam stone face and Gloria’s Colombian abrasive mess perfectly compliment each other and add two sided conflicts which reinforce the love they have. Neither of them are “soft”. Also, manny really brings the couple into a good light to the audience

Gloria is my favorite character. She's so kind, lovely, and smart. She turned the trope of the evil 2nd wife/stepmom on it's head. She's got street smarts, and brains. I also love that she had to work hard in various jobs before marrying Jay. She's awesome.

With regards to Gloria's first husband and Manny's father, Javier (played by Law and Order's Benjamin Bratt), when you see him, you can see why Gloria would have fallen for him when she was younger--AND why she ultimately left him in the end...
And it also helps, IMO, that Gloria didn't break up Jay's first marriage to Claire and Mitchell's mother, Dede--Jay and Dede had been divorced for years before Jay met Gloria...

I like Gloria. Sofia Vergara is hilarious. But i don't like the fact that nowadays it became normal to replace the mother of your children by a young trophy wife. Jay was an absent husband building his little empire and as soon as he became rich he dumped his wife for the kind of woman he could never had if he has been poorer. And of course the previous wife is depicted as a old bitter shrew. I love the way she said in their marriage that the Jay's wallet matches perfectly the boobs of Gloria. It was hilarious! And to be honest, Gloria is not easy going, she wraps him around her finger. I think her most perk for Jay is her look.
Deedee left him first. He was in rut, she left him to find herself and that's why she hates gloria so much. She thought she would find herself and make a better life than Jay's. It's in 2nd season, Lily's birthday last scene.

As the second wife with no children of my own, thank you for making this. BTW: I am 4 years older than my husband and 2 years older than his 1st wife. I also had more money when we met so....that usual movie/TV StepMom is just some made up crap. There are so many different situations. Some women are just mean, some are not. I get along with my husband's first wife and every time I was with my husband at a game or a pick up at a friend's, the Moms completely ignored me. One time I was sitting in the passengers seat and the Mom came up and completely made like I was not in the car and just talking to my husband. I will never forget that feeling. Again, she KNEW I got along with the ex but it was HER fear.
