  • The Northern Central Railway, formerly known as Steam into History, operates passenger trains on a scenic stretch of track in South Central Pennsylvania. The line is most well known as the route President Abraham Lincoln used to travel to Gettysburg to deliver his famous Gettysburg Address speech in 1863. On this occasion, the railroad and its equipment was chartered by Carl Franz for a day of photo runbys. No. 17 "York", a fully-functional replica of a Civil War-era 4-4-0, was the motive power for this private, not-publicly-announced event, with 3 passenger coaches in tow. Coverage includes the 1838-built Howard Tunnel, the third oldest railroad tunnel in the United States, as well as a plethora of rare mileage shots.
    Filmed on March 5th, 2022.

      Indeed. Idk why they treat them like theyre from walmart, just replace the boilers if its that old. I dont see why itd be too expensive, you could just weld all the seams in the riveted boiler to re use it.

      @@cmw184 Well, part of it is also the desire to keep them in as original condition as possible.
      Edit: but also this locomotive is a replica, not an original, which is why you actually see it working.

    A very nice video. The 4-4-0 was referred to as the "American" type for its unique design, and I think there's something in the way they look and move that encapsulates that same indomitable spirit.

    Even when working hard, the exhaust just seems to drift out of the funnel. It doesn’t look to have much of a punch behind it. I suspect it is due to the conical shape of the funnel which makes it so easy for the exhaust to escape. Excellent video.

    Nobody can deny the absolute, undisputed aesthetic superiority of classic american 4-4-0s over any other type of locomotive ever made. Not saying other locomotives aren't beautiful, but these are above and beyond anything else. The shape of the wheels, the contrast between the black-painted steel and the shiny bronze unions, the combination of wood and metal, the simple but beautiful paint schemes, that peak victorian style of train cars, even the soft sound of the train running, puffing and sounding its steam whistle. It's a moving sculpture you can ride.
    Also, looking at how dense and black the smoke is, this thing is dirty as hell. It goes into a tunnel for too long and everyone dies.

      Has that loco been adapted to run on oil? lf so, that would be why all that disgusting black smoke is coming out. A coal fired one with a stoker who knew what he was about would not over-coal the fire. This would keep it burning at its hottest heat, and the smoke would be virtually white, with just a little grey at base. l have driven steam trains.

    What a Beautiful Replica of a 4-4-0, and the whistle "is to-die-for." What company/business built the replica? I assume there were the same issues in the replica constructions for Promontory Point's CP Jupiter #60 and U.P @119 replicas at the Golden Spike National Monument in Utah. Now, maybe a little antiquing on the coaches, and a likeness of President Lincoln standing on the rear platform to complete the experience.

    • @firegrateproductions
      @firegrateproductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The locomotive was built by Kloke Locomotive Works in Illinois. Not the same place that built the Jupiter and 119 replicas, but based off the same blueprints.

    I saw, it has to be it, locomotive and tender being transported on I-80 west in Brookville Pa. several years ago. The trucks were parked on the on ramp. Maybe they could not get into our truck stops. I thought they may have been restored in steam town and going west because they looked like that's where they belonged.

    I don't consider myself a rivet counter, but I was somewhat taken aback to see what appear to be Bettendorf freight trucks under the passenger cars. Well at least, if not authentic c.1860, they look to be friction bearing rather than roller. Also, the passenger cars, fabricated from metal to look like wood(?) look like they're perched on c. 1940 flat cars. Truss rods anyone? Curious about the engine's headlight... coal oil, or electrically illuminated? Otherwise great video. Wish I could've been there. Great to see a beautiful 4-4-0, regardless of the fuel used to light her fire.

    • @firegrateproductions
      @firegrateproductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good observations! The coaches are indeed converted flatcars. As for the headlight, I'm guessing it's oil powered because the engine doesn't have a dynamo.

      As proved in Durango, the D&SRR was charged for a forest fire apparently caused by one of their coal-burning steamers. Coal (AND WOOD) can start forest fires. D&SSRR is converting to oil for their steam locos.
