Jeff, I can't thank you enough. Your advice helped me shoot a large 8-pointer yesterday evening here in Kentucky. I utilized your instruction about hunting the back end of storm fronts. After 2 days of heavy rain from the hurricane fallout, yesterday it stopped, and I was fortunate enough to capitalize on that.
WV opener was yesterday, but I sat it out. We FINALLY got some rain after months without any. It was very warm and humid, not the best for getting in the deer woods. So I was thrilled to sit it out and let the rain fall on the winter rye I was able to get out before the rain. Not going to push getting in the stands until conditions are right. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Thank God for the 🌧️ 🙏
For sure needed rain I'm in southeastern eastern oh and it's been bad this year. Got me permission on a piece of property in wv this year looking forward to something new
Steady drop in temperature starting October 6 through next week in pa,I know it's early season but as you said temperature drops equal good deer movement.
I finally have a buck on camera that I am dying to get a chance at I saw him last year and my buddy has him night time on camera on the same property. Figures the 1 day i slept in he daylights my feeder and the dont mess up and its a marathon not a sprint are killing me as this is the first quality buck ive ever seen on camera or might have a chance at, Im in delaware and im like doing math trying to figure out the best days to go since i dont wanna go every day and your channel is helping me a lot trying to stay calm and figure this deer out. Thank you
Thanks for all the content to lead up to the season. Not much of it pertains to me specifically (national forest weekend warrior) but I'm going into my 3rd whitetail season and have done everything 100% solo. I need content like this to replace buddies and forefathers advice/tricks and stories most people have. Just deer habits and habitats in general. I made some of your paracord mock scrapes about a month ago but It in a spot with no service so cell cams are not an option. Have SD cam on it but I haven't gone in to blow out the spot before season. Hope they will be my ticket this year. Good luck this year everyone
October 1st here in Indiana, i got a spot i might see a deer and could even see a good one but its not my favorite spots to hunt so if the weather isnt right im going there where i could care less if I burn it out lol i just got to get ina stand.
Well my buck bow season is over after an incredible hunt. Second day hunt of the season for me. I waited for the 20 degree drop in temp after heavy rain last Sunday, hunted the Banks stump stand first night and had an awesome hunt ! Started with a tee shirt and in my underwear, slept in the blind and woke up 1:29 am freezing my ass off!! Didn’t see any deer in the morning as I suspected they cleared the bean field but I accomplished my goal of not educating any deer! Next night played the wind and only hunted 70 yards from the cabin. There was at least a 20 inch inside spread beautifull buck nudging 4 other mature bucks. I had FIVE mature bucks 25 yards or less from me!! Big one was 20 yards away to my left which would be perfect except I’m a lefty.Stupid me I know better but instead of letting things play out I forced the issue. I slowly stood up to try to turn to take the shot and was busted by a buck 7 yards away…. You know the rest! As I was fuming and telling myself that’s it I’m getting a crossbow!! Two bucks came down the hill they ran up 35 ish minutes later. Not sure if they were part of the four bucks because I was focused in on the big one. Saw a heavy rack and shot it. Turned out to be a 17.5 inside rack heavy 8. … We will see if I made a bad decision because I still plan on hunting and can shoot tons of does if I want. Last year I was at the cabin from October 21st until the day before Thanksgiving! Only hunted the cold fronts, good wind days, etc but probably do more fishing this year.
WOW, what a hunt!! So dang cool too...I like that, waking up at 1:29. Hunting the cold front...not educating the deer. Man, HUGE kudos to you and the effort! Very impressive!
How are you viewing the days in MN right now, like today, where today the high is about 87 and the overnight low is 47, but still looks to get warm the next day back to the 80's? Not a traditional "cold" front with the tropical front pushing in warm weather each day. Or view it as a stand alone event, anticipate tomorrow AM to be good activity per looking at your formula?
I wonder during the October lull how many deer hide in the corn fields. Good cover, no human scent or pressure. Food everywhere just need to find water.
The opener is Tuesday, but with rain and temperatures hanging around a constant 70°, and no drop in sight, I don't see much point in going out. Even if I hit one, with all the cover there is for them to hide in, there's too much chance of losing it.
Love your videos. Any videos or suggestions on hunting a 300+ acre cattle farm with a small huntable wooded area around 2-3 acres ? Cattle have access to all of it at different times of the year except maybe an Acre or two of the wooded area
I’m surrounded by big soy bean fields, alfalfa, and corn seems to be they use the small wooded area on our farm to travel between different food sources
A lot of great information you put out Jeff thank you! The question is if hunting pressure a food etc a makes them less visible ( an I believe all that) what really is the fall shift or bucks move to there fall range?
I have 17 acres of woods with a 35 and a20on both sides of me 35 is non hunting. I cleaned up my 17 last winter making trails and bedding areas. June into July I had 8 different bucks on cellcam that disappeared mid July now after all corn is chopped of 6 bucks came back with 2 of them monsters hitting the alfalfa field by me at night and pounding my inside foodplots with clover in one and rye and oats in the other really hot on oats. The big one just showed up last night.
Iv got 10 Acres of private gound to hunt BUT I'm in the middle of a couple hundred acres of private land that only gets hunted in gun season...But I'm limited to 10 acres but there's no pressure in bow season 😊I try and not sit all day until the end of October..I either hunt till noon or noon till dark 😉
October lull is not fake. Mature bucks stay close to their beds and they don’t range far or only move to food plots after a big temp drop pushes them. Most will hit food sources and scrapes at night. Not sure if it’s increase in testosterone, but it differs from summer patterns as temp doesn’t seem to affect them as much. I hunt properties that have thousands of acres with zero pressure and 70 cell cameras and it’s unbelievably clear the deer go nocturnal in September until late October and I will apply zero pressure. I will hunt cold fronts and boom those nocturnal bucks will show. Favorite time of year to harvest your target buck. More aggressive hunters go bump bucks out of their beds in October am then set up and wait for them to come back during the day and pm with great success. Again, their ranges are way tighter. Love your content and I’m sure in smaller parcels the hunting pressure is a factor but you cannot say that October lull is only induced by people it’s not true.
He didn't say it was fake, he said it's caused by people. You're not the only person that influences a buck unless you have 10,000 acres that completely engulfs a buck's entire night time home range. Look at the studies done by MSU. They clearly show how a large, global shift occurs when hunter intrusions in the woods begin. Those bucks hear your neighbors, smell the presence they left behind when they went in, and they pull back to cover. The nocturnal myth has long been busted. They are not nocturnal, they're just not leaving cover until dark.
I hunt a few 80-120 acre tracts with ultra high pressure all around me, neighbors hunting property lines hard on all sides of all properties. Last season I tracked the data a bit to illustrate my october lull and this is the daylight deer pic percentages before abd after the opener: Feed pile cams: 32% - 4% Hog trap cams: 21% - 7% Thicket edge cams: 46% - 44% Acorn/cover cams: 34% -56% Mineral site cams: 45% - 36% I don't run scrape cams until after the season starts, but some scrapes are hit a lot in daylight and some are hit only at night. Hard to tell until I hang a cam. My conclusion on the Oct Lull is "stop baiting" lol
I believe the October lull is just bucks changing from summer areas to winter areas. I have 700 acres with a river running through it. There's no pressure, we haven't hunted yet and probably won't for a few weeks. At the end of September the mature bucks disappeared and broke up from their bachelor groups. The young guys are already sparing and acting like bullies. The does are still in same areas but big bucks are gone. I have one mature buck that's now showing up 574 yards from where he was all summer to a camera he wasn't on all summer. So he's moving its just in the dark now, he's at a camera over night by a county road back in the bottom before daylight then gone for the day. I think it's just mature bucks doing what they do. Hiding, resting, eating and maybe exploring the neighborhood in the dark. The end of October the same bucks will start showing up at different spots checking it out. Good luck to all this season.
Our gun seasons are very short up here...well, 2 weeks and then muzzleloader for a couple of weeks. But we have 3.5 to 4.5 months for bow! Which is awesome
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 In WA with archery you can hunt either in September, October or November. Or you can get the multi season tag. It definitely is different here than back home in the Midwest lol
Sorry but the October is lull is very real in many Midwest states. No reason to get to close to bedding in the middle of October. Be patient for later October
Best hunting channel on TH-cam! Thank you Sir!
Thank you very much, that really means a lot to us!
It’s a glorious marathon!!!! Yes!!! Great info. Thanks Jeff
Thanks Mark...man it sure is!! Pretty dang awesome 😊

I'm done. After 2.2 hours, I arrowed a nice 8 point. Good luck guys....
Nice...what a great feeling! Congrats!
That's awesome, but Idk how yall survive with 1 tag. We get 6 lol
@BG-bx4ey I will use another tag, maybe 2, during gun season.
Good morning Jeff! Big temp drop coming Tuesday. I’m expecting some good movement on the cams.
Man we can't wait Peter...looking outstanding!!
Do you hunt right before the temp is supposed to drop or right after?
The day it hits or the day after depending on the conditions. Usually when the winds die down; typically that evening.

I've sat twice now in ohio on 14 acres I've seen my buck both times just haven' got the right shot yet I was good with
Oh dang...great patience AND some incredible hunts to start the season. Good luck with him!

Growing up hunting in Alabama, we used to call it the December lull. Rifle season opened thanksgiving weekend and no one in the area bow hunted.

Good morning, I’m getting videos of mature bucks sparring in Indiana. How early do you begin rattle sequences during sits. Is now the time?
I had hernia surgery the 24th. I’m hoping I can get in the woods by late October.
Over here in western Massachusetts we have to wait til the 7th. And I CANNOT wait. Do these tips coincide with the big woods ?

I'm a really light caller anyways. But I use a grunt call if a buck is passing by too far away. Other than that very light
Thanks for your help 👍🦌🤸
Sure thing Bow Man!
Unfortunately in my state October and November is the only months we can hunt Deer or Elk 😕

Hi Jeff, thanks as always for your great videos. I would love to hear your thoughts on how to hunt during an EHD. It’s bad in alot of areas in MI.
