Just found these videos on Affinity Photo and Designer. What a great job you two do. I tend to like Ally's videos better because of her very soft voice, diction and normal (to me ears) cadence, but again, ALL the videos are great.
Been following your channel for a while now, and this video is just what I was looking for because I was struggling with selection. Thank you so much! Praying for Ezra to get well too. Hope to see you both on screen soon!
As someone that uses the selection tool daily I said "No way" a bunch of times whilst putting my hands to my head. I learnt so much useful information that i otherwise had no idea about. thanks so much
That's exactly what I thought in the first few frames, clear, professional and to the point. I learned a lot. those dark tones, shadows have been a nuisance. Thank you!
Thanks Ally - awesome video as usual. Nice use of the pen tool as well, didn't think of that as an option there. A QUICK TIP: You can press "D" to get the default Black/White foreground and background colors, and then "X" to exchange the foreground and background colors (in this case White/Black). This can especially helpful when masking. Cheers!
Love it! Great tutorial. Can you help me with Liquify... I cannot find those 4 persona icons (next to the purple logo) that you touch in the top left? Is there a toggle to turn them on/ off?
Photoshop was so much easier for selecting... but I swapped due to the price and started struggling with the selections. This has really helped, thanks :)
I managed to do that. But, I still don’t understand why it worked out. When you apply the blur layer as a child layer of the mask, it shouldn’t blur the entire man? Because it should affect the entire white space of the mask (whole body). Why it blurs just the edges, I don’t get it
If the blur is a child layer to the mask, then only the mask will be blurred, not the photo. Most of a mask is pure black or pure white, so not much changes, only the edges of the mask, which will blur the white and black parts of the mask. Sorry, it's kind of confusing!
Affinity Revolution Hi, thank you for the reply. So I can say that any filter applied as a child layer of a mask will only affect the “edges” of the mask?
One of the most important thing you touted. Thank you for this. And I have one question, can I use background eraser tool (and also with magical eraser tool) for this? If yes how? Your replay is much appreciated.
The blur is actually being applied to the whole mask, but the only noticeable change occurs on the edges of the mask. That's because the rest of the mask is solid white or black, so blurring those areas makes no difference (black blurred with black is still black). Confusing, I know!
@@AffinityRevolution Thank you for that quick response. But I dont seem to have those keys on my keybord. Im on a Dell Presicion 5510 and I'm living in Norway. Maybe I have a different keyboard layout?
@@BlazerTrazer Hmm.. well, you can always make your own shortcuts by going to Edit --> Preferences. Then open the Keyboard shortcuts. Then change it from "File" to "Paint brush tool", and make the shortcuts you want to use. 🙂
Excellent! I just suscribe and am very glad that I do it. There are a lots of things that I still don't get it. Why when I have the Gaussian blur filter (in white color) as a child to the mask, it only affects the edge of the selected man and not the whole man figure? I you can give me some hints, I will appreciated. Thanks.
The same comment as above but with a word changed, so now the sentence about the hints make sense: Excellent! I just suscribe and am very glad that I do it. The blur filter is effecting the MASK, which is why it does not blur the man. The filter is blurring the border of the mask, where it transition from white to black. Sorry it's a little confusing!

Hello. Thank you very much for your tutorials. I makes learning Affinity a lot easier. I do have a question. From 0:54 to 1:06, your selection of the outline of the man was so easy. When I try it, brushing the edges were so jagged and unprecise, I could not easily trace as you did. I think it might be one of my settings. I see you are on Add, width is 64 px, snap to edges is on. Also selected is Force pixedl alignment, Move by whole pixel, and Snapping (but which options). Is there something else that I am missing? Thank you.
hi i would like to know why when i select node tool and i click with left button middle two points i create one point but when im using my wacom tablet and i set button to left click i cant create one
It sounds like the Affinity tool is working correctly, but the Wacom tablet isn't. I don't have a Wacom, so I'm not sure why it's not working with Affinity. Sorry about that.
In Affinity Designer? Yes, you can do the same thing. The only weird thing is that you need to draw a SHAPE with the pen tool, and then make a selection of the shape by holding down command/ctrl, and then clicking on its layer thumbnail icon.
I'm not sure if I am running a newer version of the software, but when I apply the Gaussian Blur it does not create a new item in the layer box. Instead it make an Fx symbol.
You are applying the blur as a layer effect. I used a blur filter in this video. Layer effects are applied by pressing on the "fx" icon at the bottom of the layers panel, while filters are applied by pressing on the hourglass icon.
I’m trying to weave 2 capital letters on top of each to make a logo, a watermark. I know I can put one on top of the other, but I want it to look like it’s weaved together. Any ideas or tutorials on this?

Thank you! 😊
Would this work in design also
In Affinity Designer? Yes, you can do the same thing. The only weird thing is that you need to draw a SHAPE with the pen tool, and then make a selection of the shape by holding down command/ctrl, and then clicking on its layer thumbnail icon.
Thank you. Do you know of that bug has been fixed yet in the newest version of Affinity photo.
It's still there. It's been there for a while now, so it doesn't look like they are going to fix it anytime soon... 😕
This is the greatest tutorial on subject selection! Thank you for that :) :) :)
Wow, thank you so much! 🤗
Great tutorial. Great instructor.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video. 😊

I’m trying to weave 2 capital letters on top of each to make a logo, a watermark. I know I can put one on top of the other, but I want it to look like it’s weaved together. Any ideas or tutorials on this?
This isn't exactly what you're trying to do, but it shows a technique you could use: th-cam.com/video/sfgv3wEtpQI/w-d-xo.html
The image has a fairly simple background to remove, could you do a tutorial where the background is more complex? Thank you.
We are planning on making some more advanced selection tutorials, but they will take a while to make. :)
when you do the masking selection, is there a way to feather the selection like for hair etc
Yes, you can refine your selection by pressing "Refine" in the context toolbar (it will be an option when you have a selection tool out).
