Wow, you were very lucky. That could have been much worse as you know. I would go through the boats remaining major electrical connections to make sure they’re made correctly. Maybe the boatyard already did for the $9000 which sounds like a lot and is but there was a lot of damage there to at least two major electrical devices and systems on the the vessel. I know your pain. My boat cost me $8300 on a cruise two years ago. I wish you better luck from here on. Fair winds and following seas friends!
The Neuse River is not to be underestimated on a windy day! Wow, that story is from a long time ago when we met you in Belhaven. How is your new battery system running and where are you now? We're on the north shore of Long Island
Man, you aren't kidding about the Neuse! It was some of the toughest conditions we've seen other than during summer storms on the Gulf of Mexico. The battery system is doing a great job. In fact, it's running the windlass and thruster so well that I think it had been slowly degrading for at least a few weeks and we just really didn't notice because it was gradual. We're currently cruising the Erie Canal on our way to Lake Ontario and into Canada. Thank you for writing. Cheers!
I am a full time marine electrician and damn that is really quite something. Just look how hot the DC ground buss has gotten!! Every one of those terminals are not crimped well at all. Lots of resistance there. Probably much more that we cant see from the video. Some lucky ! thats crazy What was the bulk of the expense ? New thruster AND Windlass i hope for that kind of money. What's their shop rate?
We were lucky, indeed. We had smelled the rotten egg/sulphur scent for at least a week or two but had no idea that it could have been a battery thing till we Googled "what does an overheating battery smell like." The entire expense was related to replacing everything that sends power to the windlass and bow thruster, but not those two pieces of machinery. Five AGM batteries, new charger, all new cables, wires, busses, connectors, fuse terminals, battery selectors, etc. The shop rate was somewhere in the $100-150/hour rate, which is in line with what we've seen over the past few years. Where are you based?
@@CruisingOnward Im leaning you were overcharged. Not sure what size AGM's they fitted you or how big your charger they installed, but I thats pretty darn high. Might have 2 grand in supplies, 2 grand in batteries and a $400-650 charger. 10-20 hrs labor. but again without seeing the invoice and the boat its hard to tell just how much it truly was. Im from the coast of maine
@@nwmi493 The invoice looked legit to me and the boatyard that did the work were trustworthy. 🙂 We didn't have time to shop around and were just happy to get back underway as quickly as we did. 😎
Scary and probably worth the money to get it done correctly. I might have tried to pull everything out and redo myself, but there was something wrong and I would have just duplicated it and maybe not been as lucky the next time.
We're with you on having the work done by somebody who knows what they're doing. As you mentioned, I would have just duplicated the setup and may have had the thing melt again, perhaps with a worse outcome. We feel blessed that things went as well as they did.
We had the whole setup replaced (five batteries, battery charger, wires, cables, junctions, etc.) and paid for several hours of labor since there was very little we, the crew, could do ourselves.

Thank you for your kind well wishes. That was a big hit to the pocket book, but we're alive and the systems are working better than they ever have, so we're grateful now. 😎

In other good news, the batteries didn't catch the boat on fire.
We were quite surprised there was no fire, especially given the melted batteries, cables, and container.

NINE THOUSAND DOLLARS?? She gulped. 😳
Oh, we gulped too! 😮
Yeah, we gulped too! It hurt. But it is what it is and there is no option but to fix it correctly and move on.
