    And in other sentence.... Like
    I can never convince my roommates to help clean apartment.
    In both sentences yoy are using... To help... While in lecture you have told that when we use(get) in sentence we cant use infinitive.

    I have a few questions, if you don't mind:
    1.I found the sentence: "Don't get him talking about illness'. Is it equal substitute for "Don"t get to talk about illness'?
    If in sentences with "get" like this instead of infinitive use past participle? For example: After you have got the children dressed, can you prepare the lunch?". Meaning is changed?
    3. Is the following sentence right: "He is getting to be a skilled worker"?

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Olegman, let me answer your questions: 1. "Don't get him talking about illnesses" means "Don't allow him to start talking about illnesses because he will never stop". You usually say something like this because if that person starts talking about a subject he feels strongly about, he'll never shut up. 2. Your sentence should read: "After you've GOTTEN the children dressed, can you prepare lunch?" 3. Yes, this sentence is correct. Here, 'getting to be' means 'becoming' so the sentence could look like this: "He is becoming a skilled worker". Hope this answers your questions. Thanks as always for watching and for your great questions!

    • @olegmanpo3629
      @olegmanpo3629 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot Andrew. Phrases with 'get' so complicated for me. They are everywhere in informal English.I understand first example with get+ing, but the other sentences I found - don't. Here it is: "Once we got the heater going the car started to warm up". Do 'got' mean 'make' or 'handle' there? How should this sentence translate?

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your sentence here is an example of the grammar from this video on 'have' and 'get'. So 'get the heater going' here means caused to the heater to start working.

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That sounds like another lesson altogether. Generally, 'have something do/doing' are used in the same way without a difference in meaning but there can sometimes be differences. Perhaps I will make another lesson talking about this.

    Sir, I have a question. i found a sentence which is I have you waiting me . So what's the difference between "have you waiting me" and "have you wait". Thanks

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      'Have you wait' sounds like it is a request; 'have you waiting' seems more like the person waiting is being inconvenienced somehow.

    Hi. Nice video. I have a question about this topic. When I say.
    I got Tim to go (virtually the same as I had Tim go). Does it mean that I persuaded him to go (to the party, for example), but the action (to go) can have a sense that is going to happen in the future?
    To clarify:
    It's 9:00 a.m.----------I bump into Tom, and I persuaded him to go.
    Then, at 10:00 a.m. I say to another friend" I got Tim to go to the party TONIGHT".
    Is that correct?
    So, I guess that it can be ambiguous and, in some cases, the causative carries some ambiguity about when the action is going to happen, right?
    I think that the same happens to have+somebody+ing------It can be like an experience or something that you cause but in a progressive sense.

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you are correct. To clarify in that situation that they party hasn't happened yet, you might just say: I convinced Tim to go to the party tonight. But either way, your sentence is fine. Nice question.

    Differences between possessive have and causative have. How these two structures are different from each other.

      Are you asking that as a question?

      Maple Leaf ESL ,, yes. This is a question.

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Basically, the causative 'have' more or less means 'request or 'ask' while the possessive 'have' means to 'own'. So, for instance, 'I had a doctor check my eyes' means 'I asked the doctor to check my eyes.' 'I have a bicycle' mean 'I own a bicycle'.

    Thanks Andrew!!!!

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A catch-22 is something in which neither result or outcome is achievable without first accomplishing the other. For instance, if I moved to another city I needed a job in order to get an apartment, but also needed an address in order to get a job, then both will be impossible to acquire as each requires securing the other one first. Hope this helps. Nice question, by the way.

    mentor andrew, what is the difference between starting in asking questions started with "IF" and "WHEN" ? If "if" started in the sentence is the verb present tense? For example, If you eat the fruits you will be healthy. Is this correct? And if "when" is started in a sentence is the verb becomes past tense? for example, When we ate all the fruits we're stuffed. which is correct? im really confused please help me :-(

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the question, KUYA SONGBIRD. Basically 'if' and 'when' can be followed by many different tenses. The difference between them is that 'when' is certain whereas 'if' is conditional. So, for instance, 'If you eat fruit, you will be healthy' is a grammatically correct sentence. But it comes with a condition: Only after you eat the fruit will you be healthy. Now take the sentence 'when you eat fruit, you will be healthy'. This sentence is saying that you will certainly be healthy when you eat fruit (at least in the mind of the speaker). Hope this helps at least partly clear things up!

    Please I have few questions,What is the difference between these sentences,beside using "get" for informal language and "have" in the formal:
    "I got the mechanic to check my brakes" and "i had the mechanic check my brakes"
    Also
    "She has her blood pressure taken every month "and "she gets her blood pressure taken every month "

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello there. In your first set of examples, you have used a causative verb in the active voice. Thus, the difference is that 'get' is generally used to show that you had to convince or persuade someone while 'have' is used to say that you just simply asked or requested something of someone. In your second set of examples, you used the causative verb in the passive voice. In this case, there is no difference between using 'get' and 'have'. They would be interchangeable. Please go watch my videos on 'Causative Verbs' for further examples and explanations.

    Past perfect we can make sentence in causation
    She had had car washed
    Is it correct?

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that would absolutely be correct. For instance, 'she had had her car washed right before the rain began'. In spoken English I might naturally make a contraction out of 'she had' so that it would be spoken like: ' she'd had her car washed...'
