  • The ongoing war in Ukraine has seen all sorts of small arms pop up. Many from military stores, some old - some new and some that were previously civilian-owned. One manufacturer which continues to surface is Savage Arms with a number of models seen in the field.

The AI, Surgeon, whatever…is all great rifles, no doubt about it! But at what cost? They are rarely purchased by individuals and almost always by professionals that have rifles purchased for them via contracts.
By contrast, the Savage rifles will routinely hold better than acceptable accuracy for less than 1/3 the price. According to Larry Vickers even a hair over 1MOA is far more acceptable than is necessary for a true sniper rifle. Meaning that if it’s a personal weapon then more money can be spent on the optics and ammunition to train with. If it’s an agency that is on a budget you can equip more personal with better guns and more add on gear for the same price as a bare bones GA Precision & just a scope.
If you have the budget, get the better guns, at least for the best shooters that can actually use the small amounts of better quality than the others have. The vast majority do. It need that level of fit and finish. Most people will not be able to outshoot a Savage rifle.

It is counter intuitive, but civilian hunting rifles tend to be more accurate than military rifles, even military designated marksman and even sniper rifles. The reason being that military rifles are required to be more rugged and must be more reliable under minimal maintenance.

Savage have progressively upped their game over the years and improved their products while Remington went in the other direction. "Mil-spec" means simple and reliable, it doesn't have to be fancy. Take the L96/L96A1 and AW for instance, they are very well made but the bare bones of the rifle system is beautifully simple compared to say...the 700/M40 by Remington. Savage makes constant engineering changes. This is good in some ways, but has drawbacks in others. One of those is that a lot of their engineering changes individual parts aren't necessarily backwards compatible with older versions of the same guns. Another drawback is that many of their parts in their MSR series aren't compatible at all with industry standard parts like barrels, gas blocks, and gas tubes. For instance their gas block journal on some of their barrels is a proprietary diameter

Ukraine has multiple manufacturers of AR-10 and AR-15 pattern rifles that are being used for military purposes right now. Manufacturing new rifles and parts may not be as feasible at the moment. It would make more sense, logistically speaking, to be able to utilize existing stocks of parts to repair the rifles they have in inventory. Typically there is no specific end of service life for an entire rifle. It is usually a specific component or components and if they are able to be replaced or overhauled most militaries have programs in place for that eventuality.
Let's say you are an armorer operated close to a line unit in Ukraine. You have to be able to repair broken rifles of many different types. AK-74s, Malyuks, Fort 221s, AR-15s, etc. It would make sense for you to have to keep as few variations of parts on hand as possible to repair the widest range of weapons you can. More than likely you wouldn't be able to lug around every special proprietary part for each brand of rifle present. Not to mention any kind proprietary tools that may be needed. Most field armorer's kits consist of as small as possible tool kits and parts in order to maintain mobility. My dad has a Model 110 in .270 that is from the early 50's and that man can pull the scope up to his eye and shoot the second he sees and hit anything with it. He used to do that with a 1.5X3 power scope before finally getting a 3X9 scope. He made something like a 3/4 mile to nearly a mile long shot with that old scope of his and that rifle.
My ex's dad also preferred a VERY old Savage 99 in .300 Savage to hunt with, including bear. It was over 100 years old and going strong, he claimed it was the most accurate rifle he had ever shot out of the hundreds he'd owned.
My newer Savage-Stevens in .223 is one of the most accurate rifles I've ever shot myself, it saved my uncles life when he had it. A cougar was about to pounce on him and he turned around and shot the thing from the hip. Savage has always been known for accuracy. Since their acquisition several years ago they seem to have decided to compete with Ruger. I noticed back when I worked for a sporting goods store. I was looking at getting myself a Ruger Precision in .308, and we had a Savage Stealth as well. I decided to do a bit of research, and it turned out that the Savage was shooting tighter groups. I then stumbled across the Savage Ashbury Precision Rifle, and bought it at an great price from one of the warehouses. People complain about the buttstock, but it was kept simple to allow the purchaser to alter as needed. I love mine.

The savage axis is considered a dirt cheap bolt action rifle that works fine, but isn't particularly praised in American gun culture. That cheap and lower regarded rifle is good enough for snipers in Ukraine. Puts it into perspective. Makes me appreciate my gun rights that Ukraine could have benefited from having in the start. Civilian weapons are usually equal to or better than "military grade" when it comes to quality. An armed populace that is familiar with weaponry could have greatly benefitted them. While we are typically limited to the semi auto versions, an American gun owner could pick up a service weapon in Ukraine with confidence and familiarity. Gun owners typically have shot more than many soldiers around the world, so would be better shots. Why do Americans obsess over their guns? Because we are not at anyone's mercy when we have guns, too. There's my 2a 2cents soapbox, but I feel this very clearly demonstrates the value of having a second amendment.

Lots of flat, open fields with zero cover on them. Sounded like they need more 50 cal and stuff like that. Same type of issues US found, 223 & 308 weren't getting the job done because of distances.

Also as of late all of the available gun store stocks have been wiped clean by civilians arming themselves so you might see very rare devices or combinations.

A decent bolt action gun with a quality scope and chambered in a full-power found will always have a place on the battlefield.

The MDT chassis are from savage, they made a new rifle last year called the 110 elite precision, made for PRS matches. But a couple of the photos are definitely the elite precision, you can tell by the barrel but and very thick barrel, along with the extended magwell that has a barricade stop. Odd they’re getting brand new precision rifles

How is it odd, the video even mentioned that Ukraine had purchased something like 450 rifles from Savage a few years ago, for its SpecForces. Apparently seen in service in 2017.

@@jessehachey2732 the elite precision rifle was introduced only last year. That specific model I mean, not other older versions of the 110 series of rifles

savage bolt guns have great design, good quality with affordable price. only need to put on a good solid stock to make them close to perfect.

The most common areas where sniper rifles are used are in eastern Ukraine, we have small hills here, long fields, steppes that are separated by a forest belt, in general, a paradise for snipers, and hell for infantry ...

    • @green9165
      @green9165 2 ปีที่แล้ว

After the active phase of hostilities in 2014-2016, only separatist artillery, a FSB special forces sniper, worked in the east, there is a lot of evidence for this. Well, Ukrainian counter-sniper groups. and all in principle. Since 2016, most of those killed have been due to snipers.

It certainly seems like difficult open country to fight across.

@@TheArmourersBench Therefore, the counterattack of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the deblockade of Mariupol is very difficult, they will have to go through the fields open on all sides for about 100 kilometers. For this we need long-range weapons, there will be weapons and victory. Ukraine knows how to fight better than anyone and has already proved it, the main thing would be what.
