- How to Repair Rusty Paint Chip with a DREMEL | DIY
So I saw this pretty good size rusty paint chip spot on my hood and I figured it would be a perfect opportunity to test my skills with a DREMEL. Try not to laugh too hard because I totally just sent it and there was no script to this...haha. For my tools, I’m using my DREMEL 3000 with 462 & 463 rubber buffing bits. If you have any questions feel free to ask them!

Thank you guys for watching!
that close up when you do the dremel-ing part is super helpful, best video I've seen
Thank you very much!
With chipping you'd need to extend the affected area around it by a few mm to catch any rust particles that have crept beyond the skirt of the dent. A bit more hassle but it won't bubble the paint later.
Nice, yeah I haven’t had any issues since I did the job.
What's the best way to do that without powertools? I have some 1500/2000/2500 sandpaper and stanley knife, not sure if that would work.
@@samuelhayden5209 pencil eraser with sandpaper on it might work well
Had no idea there was such a thing as rubber burs. Makes all the difference. Thanks!
Definitely!
I borrowed your Dremel idea, it works fantastically. But the job is not finished after applying the paint. I added a thicker layer of paint to be "taller" than the original one, sanded it with 800 grid sand paper to match the line wanted to have, then wet sanded a little in the surroundings with 3000 and 5000 paper, then applied polishing paste. It's 98% gone, nobody sees it unless I tell them where I worked
Hey Radu, thanks for sharing! You are right it’s not completely flush so it definitely needs a lot more work after the Dremel. I personally don’t really care about making it look perfect as long as rust spot was taken care of. It’s been about 3 years and it’s still looking good without any issues! Glad that this worked for you as well.
Had me at just gunna send it
Haha! Sometimes you just gotta send it 😂
Same😂😂
Good stuff...Appreciate the chill approach. I'll be trying this. Thanks.
Thanks Marlin! The only thing I’d recommend and I haven’t mentioned it in the video, is using some primer prior to using touch up paint.
Thank you - this is the first touch up video I've seen that makes perfect sense for my also older car. I have several chip and the minor cost of a Dremel and a couple of points is a great investment in keeping my car from the rust yard. Great videography!
Thank you for watching! Yes for a daily driver it’s a good fix, it’s definitely not perfect but it will stop the paint from rusting any further.
I spent this afternoon doing all the stone chips on my SUV - we live out in the country. Nothing this effective and brilliant should be this easy! Great results, though I did use primer thinned 50/50 as the base coat. Not perfect, but darned good. Thanks!@@TriadoCustomEngraving
@@coldlakealta4043That’s awesome! Glad that it worked for you.
Thank you for recommending the Dremel 462 and 463 Rubber Polishing Points (both working diameter 6,4 mm), they do seem safer to use than stone polishing points.
Yes those work great for polishing and can be used for other things as well! I don’t think that I’ve seen anyone use that for this purpose before…haha but I think that it’s an excellent tool!
Thought it was jason statham for a sec
Haha 🤣
Freakin classic. Safety first shipmate! 😂
Haha thanks bro!
These videos just get better and better! 😂🤘
Hell yeah brother, I’m only getting started! They don’t know the Feev yet 😂
Awesome video bro!! Very creative!!!
Thank you brother!
haha safety first! thats something I would do, popping in like that. at first I thought you were going to do a cool engraving on the car hood.
Haha! Trying to at least make it a safe “send it” moment lol
Thanks for the video man. Ordered the bits and I'm gonna try it this weekend. Ive got about 25-30 chips to deal with though 😂
Haha yup I got more since this video. Although the one that I did holds really well.
@@TriadoCustomEngraving worked insanely well and my paint touch up kit has an amazing colour match. Need to build the paint up a little more but apart from that, it's great. Thanks for making this video and pushing me to do this job myself 👍
@@poshpickle9024 That’s awesome, great to hear that it worked for you!
Use a Q tip to apply the paint works much better from my experience
Very nice, thanks!
You should have way more subs then you have, love your vids
Thank you brother! Just hit 1,000 so I’m happy. 🤙🏻
Good tip! Thanks!
Glad that you found it helpful, thanks for watching!
Great job man
Thanks Geoffroy!
Awesome video Max....safety first! lol
Thanks Bob! Gotta keep those kids informed so they don’t poke their eye out 😂
…word-up dawg!
👍🏻
Very creative 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you Mom! 😃
Great video! Very cool! THANK YOU!
Jim thanks so much for watching!
What a strange feel, to hear your adult voice after so many years )) Мужик !!
Хаха, спасибо Андрей! Да время летит...но я все помню как мы играли во дворе 😃
Hey I tried using wax carvers. Like scraper hooks. Looks like it’s for dentist. It works perfectly for chips
Nice, thanks for the tip!
😂😂😂😂 I tried not to laugh but couldn’t 🙃😂🤣
Haha! Trying something different 😆
@@TriadoCustomEngraving good to see some of your personality come out in your video 😂
Did you go straight from dremel-ing the area to applying the paint or did you use rubbing alcohol before the paint?
I did yes, alcohol wipe would probably help with paint prep.
Great tutorial! One question, what rotation speed should the Dremel be set to when doing this?
Thank you! 25,000 rpm would be sufficient speed.
@@TriadoCustomEngraving Thank you for the quick reply! Will do this tomorrow :)
@@Husramash Awesome! Let me know how it goes.
touch paint doesn't need any 'touch up primer' for bare metal surfaces?
Hey Dozy, thank you for your question. I just looked it up and looks like you do need to add some primer to get the best results. Although in this video I did not use primer, it still turned out fine. So it will be personal preference.
But how about rust protection? I was told that it is not good to apply paint on clear metal.
I did this about 3 years ago and don’t have any issues with that spot. Others recommended using primer then touch up paint but it’s whatever your preference may be.
You’re awesome
Thank you Joe!
I’m curious, should you put a primer before putting the touch up paint? How much did you pay for that Dremel?
I was actually going to make an update video since I have another spot that I have to do. All depends on the paint that you use if you need primer or not. Some suggest to use it and some don’t say. I applied my paint without primer and it’s holding on just fine. As far as my Dremel I’ve had my Dremel for a while but you can pick one up for around $80. Any rotary tool should work though.
@@TriadoCustomEngraving I am about to do exactly what you did in the video, but I want to use a primer. Do you think I can use any general primer for metals or do you know about any special kinds of primers for car use?
@@bubanek I just did a quick search on google and looks like they do make automotive touch up primer. I wouldn’t buy a huge spray can of primer if it’s for a small chip.
Do I need to use primer first before using touch up paint?
Hey Jim, I had this question asked before and after doing some research it is recommended that you do. I did not use it and it still came out looking good without any issues.
@@TriadoCustomEngraving You should use etch primer. Beed doing it for years
@@mreightytwenty8709 Awesome, thanks for the tip!
@@mreightytwenty8709 where can I get that?
Do you not need primer under touch up paint?
Hello Julio, I did not apply any primer and a year later that spot is still good to go. I’d say if I had a larger area to work with I would definitely put primer on. This is my personal preference so do some research online before painting your car.
Hope do notice me anyway what cause it to have that dot dent rust on your car for 10yrs?
Hey Angelo, I don’t think that I had the paint chip there for 10 years, maybe a few years. My car on the other hand was 10 years at that time…12 years old now haha. Repair still holds to this day.
how has it kept up?
I haven’t had any problems with it. It’s not perfect to where you can’t tell where the repair happened but it surely stopped rusting which was my main goal.
Bro, you look like a younger version of Jason Sathom
Hahaha thanks man!
Why doesn't the color match the original, even if it's by number? Because it's way way too dense. If we dilute it, even 50%, it will catch much better
Haven’t tried doing that. I honestly didn’t care either way, once it dried it was very close to the original color. I’m sure over 11 years the original color could have faded as well.
Молодец. Скоро откроешь свой сервис 😁
Хаха! Если нету чего гравировать 😂
So…….. what about polishing that spot after it dries to blend?
You can do that if you want, it’s a commuter car so I don’t bother.
Did the rust come back?
Nope, held up well
lol
🤙🏻
what sandpaper grit should i use ? i don’t have that tool
Hello Stephan, I’m not sure what the polishing bit is equivalent to, maybe a 220 grit but I’m not certain. You don’t have any rotary tools whatsoever?
I guess the paint is Already primed
Yeah I haven’t had issues
@@TriadoCustomEngraving ,okay good 👍. I'm about to do the same thing you did, thanks for the feedback
Its called a tri coat no 2 tone
Are you referring to type of paint or color of my car that’s two tone? Which part of the video are you referring to?
Subaru’s paint quality just sucks man lmao
Haha yeah man, I honestly don’t care I still love it! I got two of them 😂
dreadful
Glad to hear, have a great day there Matthew!
