Hello! I have a small correction for you. This video discredits itself by not using person-first language. Shawn has autism. He is not autistic. Calling somebody autistic allows their diagnosis to define them. A good rule of thumb is to say the person first and then their struggle in life.
In addition to autism, this character has been raised with abuse and neglect and would also have RAD and PTSD behaviors. I hope that the show can get into a little more of how these things affect him in addition to his autism. We are an autism family of three proudly spectrum kids by birth and one who we adopted at age 10. He had 5 years of severe abuse and neglect and 5 years of 12 different foster homes before he came to our family. Freddie Highmore has always been one of our favorite actors. I wish there was a way to get a hold of the show to delve more into these other issues that would affect his behavior. Is there a way?

As an autistic adult and knowing the everyday struggles of life, it's really awesome to see TV shows like this. I'm so excited to see how Shaun develops in the show. It's hard to make ashore like this relatable to people with autism. From what I can see in this video and the trailer for the show they are doing a great job so far.

Rose Mata I don’t have autism myself but have known of 3, none spoke the way his character does, they all spoke normally as I stated in my other comment I found Atypical to be fairly accurate from what I have seen as the people with autism I knew weren’t able to control what they said they just said whatever. For instance Courtney love is one of the few Hollywood stars with autism, and she speaks perfectly fine

MiroshChaeray true true but the people I came across with autism acted a lot like his character one person in particular more so than the others, he had more than just autism tho. But none I’ve met acted the way this guy portrays them with the voice and everything

Well, the spectrum is large and none of us acts precisely the same so I think it's hard to say if there are some who indeed speak the way Shaun does.
Maybe him also having savant syndrome could have affect on his speech, and/or his childhood as it was clearly a traumatic experience judging from the flashbacks throughout the series.
It is a common misconception that all autistic people cannot show or have no emotion. My sister and I both have Aspergers and we are VERY emotional and empathic. We can both tell if we've upset someone, we love VERY deeply and know exactly how to show it. Sometimes we cannot tell if we are showing it too much and that's when we need to be told when to back off. But, thinking that people with autism can't show and can't feel emotions is a BIG lie.
I think autistic people have more problems (in general) in showing it, especially if you have a worse case of autism, but as you said that doesn't mean the individual has no empathy or feelings. It's a big misconception.
However, I do believe it's true that a lot of people on the spectrum have troubles showing it. But that's not because they do not feel it.
But personally i'm the same as you. I've been diagnosed with PDD-NOS back in the day and i'm fully capable of showing feelings. Probably a little too much as I cry with every single episode of the good doctor, haha. Probably because his social aspect is so relatable.

I'm asperger I have discordination I trip a lot, I have problems with the touch, contact with people, I don't really like kisses and hugs too much I'm assexual, I have problems having eye contact or to have interest talking to people, I'm sensible to loud noises strong smells and changes on light I have problems bonding with people and show emotions I forget stuff like go say hi or bye or maintain a conversation, I have a plan for the day and I hate when it gets disturbed sometimes I have some meltdowns, I also have problems understanding a lot of human behaviors I don't get some reactions and acts I'm also bad showing emotion like I feel stuff just not in a level as strong and I never know how to describe how I feel it kinda comes in a pain like headache mostly is that...

@@iurifaisca5227 aspie/autistic aswell, my issue was I became an expert in "masking". showing social cues that everyone wanted to see, but hiding my inner demons with a thick skin. i frustrate myself because my mask sometimes get glued to my face and its rough trying to actually rip it off and really remember who and what condition I have.
It’s called Autism Spectrum Disorder for a reason not every person with autism acts the same they are all different in different ways, Shaun is portraying the type of autism the writers want him to have.

As the mother of a young adult who is on the spectrum I think Freddie does a wonderful job. I feel he's brought more awareness to the ASD as well as showing how no matter what a differently abled person is dealing with, we are all human and have the same needs and desires.

I loved the Good Doctor because my cousin Mathew acts the same way. He isn’t a doctor, of course, but he has very similar mannerisms and I have a very close relationship with him. Watching Shawn grow throughout the show sometimes brought me to tears because it reminded me so much of him.
Anyway, I think that this show overall did a really good job.
I have high functioning autism and this video made me feel really accepted. I also related to quite a few things said here,such as the whole question thing. I have always hated certain questions and I still avoid them as much as possible,but statements are fine with me

Shaun does a fantastic job. It is so interesting to see him portray some of the behavior of autistic people. It makes me want to know more about the subject, the different forms, and reactions or behavior they may exhibit. The show is my husband's and my favorite and we think Shaun plays it beautifully.

I have to be honest. I have autism, high functioning and this video was really insightful and it kind of defines the situation I was in. I struggle with human emotions sometimes, and sometimes I get sensitive of what other people felt about me or if people are hurting in general. I also tend to like to study different things that interests me. For me it is an interesting combination of meteorology and American history. You explained well that with autism, kids with autism can mature over time. I used to tend to feel socially isolated, and I used to make random and sometimes awkward statements or had weird quirks. Now with interaction from my parents, my friends and my peers who I worked with over the years, this got me to the level of being acceptable socially around other people. I used to have difficulty being around large crowds due to the noise and it made me somewhat claustrophobic. Now, it hardly even seems to concern me, knowing that social events can be crowded and that I'm used to it. I still have a lot to learn and a lot to work on, but I think I'm getting there.
As someone who has worked with Autistic people for over 30 years, this character tries to cover a wider spectrum in the role. One person may do one or more of his actions and others very few. However, everything he portrays I have observed in nearly all of my contacts. Well acted and researched and makes the spectrum less scary for many people I hope. Love the show.
I love how this show actually had representation of something I do that a lot of people don’t know or understand! Shaun sees different things in his mind but to him it can be right in front of him. I’ve had that my whole life and it’s to the point that I can actually see music. The draw back is that I have to where headphones every time I go out and even in class.

I feel like the acting in The Good Doctor is spot on by Freddie Highmore, It's the writing that gets on my nerve. I think that Freddie shows the correct stimming ( or 'twitching' ) for each situation. Everyone on the spectrum that I know has a different tic. Freddie is a great actor and I believe he has a beautiful point of veiw on the character
As someone with autisim I can say it is pretty accurate. Everyone with autisim is different and we all handle things differently! I can honestly say I can easily relate too Shawn.
This makes me want to cry because I went through all the things the character Shawn has gone through
I do love the show I'm on the autism spectrum and I'm very glad that they have it but I don't want people to mistake the fact that autistic people can work full-time there are many of us on the spectrum that may be high-functioning that may not be able to handle a full-time job and I'm hoping people understand this
My brother is Autistic and through my experience I think that many of the hardships brought up in the show are realistic. Now I can't speak for everyone who has autism, there are differences depending on where an individual is on the spectrum. For the most part though, the acting is very well done and spot on.
An amazing actor and I commend his commitment to making the character real.

Watch this show on health class and I was so interested that I watched more then I showed my grandma she really loves this actor that portrayed autism and she actually loves the character on the show
Interesting video, however I wish there was less emphasis on autism being disabling and needing to be "overcome" to lead a "functioning life". "atypical behaviours" don't need to be "stamped out" they can be personal quirks like a person that cracks their knuckles or knows lots of random general knowledge. They don't live functioning lives in spite of autism. Overall a very interesting, well thought through and positive video though. I love the show, Freddie does a really good job and I find it increadibly enjoyable and relatable.

I love watching "The Good Doctor", and I was so happy to see the show take on Sean having a love interest. My heart broke for Sean when he was trying to understand his feelings when it came to love.
My son is also a young, high functioning autistic adult. While I hope there comes a day he too finds love, I lived life long enough to know that it doesn't last forever; and I worry about how my son would navigate a possible heartbreak.

The recognizition and awareness of autism has increased exponentially as has the human population increased exponentially.
The sociopathology of autistic people is total bull. We may have trouble showing it at times, but it's definitely there. For me personally (I have Aspergers) I think I'm more empathetic than other people, and sometimes there's to much emotion that I freeze and it looks like there's no emotion.
Oh the lengths some people will go to avoid calling us autistic! It's not offensive; we even prefer that term over "with autism"!

Freddie Highmore is a gifted actor/director and producer. He likely writes as well. I first saw this talented young man on the show The Bates Motel. He plays a young Norman Bates. I think he is doing a great job in The Good Doctor. Autism, as I understand causes a very wide spectrum of behaviors and symptoms. And many of them are gifted to some degree or another. Freddie is doing a fantastic job. And I can not imagine the work it takes for him to stay in character. I loved this last episode. He gets his job back and ends up with a date. Has there ever been another TV show like this?
The Good Doctor introduced me more to the experiences of autistic people. Switched at Birth showed me different elements of the deaf community. I like to watch shows that make me more aware. They make not fully represent everyone but I appreciate feeling more informed.
Unfortunately it isnt a good gauge of an austic persons experiences at all, especially when you concider its clearly savant autism they are clearly inspired by and savants are just as intelligent as they are stupid they have far too many struggles and its not common and they couldnt become doctors, and a high fuctioning autistic person who might actually be a doctor wouldnt behave anything like him, you probably wouldnt even know they were autistic, if you want a good reperesentation of savant autism im not a fan of the movie but rain men is way more accurate, he can count cards but can barely take care of himself.

b h Does it occur to you that each autistic person is different and that Shaun May speak in a monotone because speech feels unnatural? Shaun isn’t representing all autistic people, Shaun is Shaun. His autistic traits, quirks and difficulties are consistent and don’t feel like they’re forced for the sake of looking weird. He goes off the monotone a bit when he’s experiencing a strong emotion, or, at least, I can sense the emotion behind it. Shaun’s body language is so much like mine that the only huge difference between us is my face reflects how I feel more than his does. There are autistic people who have trouble showing how they feel and Shaun strikes me as being very emotional and not always able to show it. I think he has a lot of anger buried inside that still hasn’t come out yet.

I know someone and I don't judge or speak differently to him than I would anyone else it is what makes him the wonderful personality that he is and I get him in real life we are all different in our own ways it's how others treat us which can be negative x

The only thing that bothers me is the plotline for every episode is pretty much the same thing.
There's a big case and everyone is worried , shaun saves the day or the patient is successfully saved and that's pretty much it . I'm not hating on the show but it got kinda predictable after a while. I love Freddie's acting and that's the reason I'm willing to watch it again.
Is it really? For me it was unpredictable because sometimes they save the patient but sometimes they don't and you can't know for sure what it is going to be.

@@tansantosh906 This is a problem with every medical show frankly. I think they've done as good a job as any at avoiding it. We've seen him be wrong, we've seen him lose patients, we've seen other doctors be the one to make the correct diagnosis. Sure, he'll probably save the day 75% of the time but hey... it's his show.
I can't speak to the accuracy, I actually watched the video and read the comments hoping to learn more about that. What I've learned so far is there is disagreement, there is enough diversity on the spectrum to make "accurate" hard to gauge, and some people who both are on the spectrum or work with those who are think it's a decent portrayal, and some on the spectrum feel represented and validated - which is good enough for me. Also, one of my favorite shows right now.
I also like to assume when watching a show like this that they are skipping over all the boring routine days to show us the interesting or pertinent parts that move the narrative forward. I just edit in for myself that there are 10 boring days for every interesting one, they just don't show that because, why would you?

Long story short my dad promised I can go solo next time (I've already done solo vacations. I still remember my first one a few years ago...A GREAT test to see if I could really handle myself without my parents and...I could!)
It's weird looking back and realizing as a kid my Aspergersyndrome was a fiant impact on life. BUT as a teen when I FINALLY started listening to people...Next thing you know I'm living solo at college!
I'm not sure why it was said in this video that Sean MUST have had knowledge of and interaction with many people and popular media because he went to college and medical school. I feel certain that he would not have lived in the dorms as this would have been overwhelming for him. I would think that Dr Glass found a place for him to stay to go to school. Just because he became a Doctor it doesn't mean he interacted with the other students that much, perhaps only on team projects, but maybe even not then.
I went to university for four years and now that I am finished I can say that I still don’t have a friend from my uni class and I don’t keep in contact with any of my classmates. I spent most of my time studying, reading, and trying to get more information from my lecturers. I had no interest in forming friendships with my classmates. I am high functioning autistic.

My son is now 35 and has Autism, he has his own charachter and personality, the range can be extreme and some people with Autism can also have Dyspraxia and other conditions making the condition very varied from person to person. I feel the part of Shaun Murphy is played very accurate of a person with Aspergers Syndrome.
I have autism 1, aka high-functioning autism, with a special interest for, besides video games, anime and similar stuff, psychology, psychiatry and just humans in general, so I understand both questions and statements rather well, unless the person words it in an odd way (for me). I'm INFJ, the mediator personality, with so much empathy, it actually cripples me. Understanding how people's lives have been, and why they act the way they do, their likes and dislikes and so on.. Human behavior, which is also the thing that frustrates me the most. With how biased people are when it comes to labeling "able bodied people" and disabled bodied people" and so on. The small clues showing that they don't like the way you look and etc.. It bothers me. But yet people can't help it. But we with autism aren't as biased.. or atleast we are less judgemental than others. People bring looks into stuff when it's the most unrelevant thing to that specific subject. We tend to do that with other stuff and people can't really follow our trains of thoughts because of it. I have yet to find someone else with autism who are kinda similar to me when it comes to understanding people on a deeper level. I can do this despite being avoidant, becasue I use my imagination and put myself into other people's shoes. Makes me wonder if anyone have done that with me...
Now, I haven't really seen this show, but by the looks of it, it's the most accurate portrayal of autism that I have ever seen. Not like others are worse.. It's just... feels more natural.. in an autistic way... He reminds me of a few old classmates of mine. Such a great actor!! Respect!

As some have alluded to, one of the most troubling things about the portrayal of autism in this show is the implication that anyone with autism can overcome it to become "high functioning" if simply given the right time and experience. My understanding is that this is not always true with people on the "spectrum", and care must be taken to acknowledge that many autistic people can never become high-functioning and must NEVER blamed if they cannot overcome this brain deficit to ANY degree.
It must be remembered that autism is not an illness but in fact a brain disorder that can be coped with to some degree, but never completely overcome.
Autism runs in my family. My dad's youngest sister had it, my youngest brother, my son, and my daughter's son..all have autism. My son is low functioning, my brother and grandson high functioning with savant traits. I've been around many others thru schools, autistic society, support systems. There are more who are different individually, and many who are similar. Each of my auristicfamily members are different and according to my experiences, the actor who plays Shawn does an Amazing job. As does the actor who plays Dean on the show Claws, and also Dustin Hoffman as Rain Man. Amazing.

Shaun’s neighbor’s name is Lea (lee-a) not Lea, Freddie is amazing (take it from an Aspergirl), and I think they should have hired a consultant living with ASD. (The consultant for Joyful Noise and Jane Wants a Boyfriend has ASD). It takes one to know one.

I think my friend has autisum I told her to tell a doctor he said to her "before we begin that if he finds indication of abuse ( I don't know if he meant that she was being abused or if she was the abuser) he would inform the police. I don't believe she was either way, but she never went back. Decades of living like this; I wish she wasn't so scared to find out.

I guess I’m the only one here that didn’t like the show? They didn’t really show him as a full fledged dynamic character, he was just like an autism diagnosis check list. Just because someone has autism doesn’t mean they don’t have a personality. Like most media portrayals of autism the way they seemed to infantilize him left a sick feeling in my stomach. I know they keep saying that autism is different in everyone, I realize, but can’t they show it differently then every other way that people with autism is shown in media(genius, white, male, no emotional adaptation, little personality etc.). I have autism, when it rubbed me the wrong way I looked it up and saw that other people with autism don’t like the way he is portrayed. Everyone here seems to love it so I may get hate but honestly, I tried to like the show, but I couldn’t.
Agreed (as another person on the spectrum). It was clearly based on research, but he doesn't seem to me like a REAL person with autism. One can't forget he's a fictional character, and he almost feels like a caricature, almost as if they're trying too hard to cross things off the check list.
I have autism and I am almost 14 and I know that most stuff is acted but I think almost the same way. I want to be a vet someday because I can tell what is wrong with them pretty quickly and I hate loud noises and people yelling. I also hate being hugged it makes me feel trapped.
As of 2013 Aspergers has apparently been lumped in with the general autistic spectrum.
I’ll be 39 next month, and despite the high probability of OCD, I was diagnosed with ADD which much like the autism thing, it’s lumped in with ADHD so I guess anything ADD is also ADHD as well and a coworker of mine who has that along with me, told me that and I didn’t know that until he explained that within the last week or two.
Reading some articles within the last three years at least, IA did not know that there’s a 70 to 80% overlap and characteristics between ADD and autism, and there’s a possibility I can have both ADD and Aspergers, Or I was miss diagnosed, because I was born in 82 and I was diagnosed with ADD as a kid so that was probably by or before 1990, and there are several people that see my mannerisms, how are you react, and not just because she’s my mom, but my mom thinks I’m very very creative and highly intelligent, so I would be a high functioning form of it, because I’ve lived a regular life and I’m more like a so to speak normal person, then Hassan‘s character is portrayed along with other people who you can tell more or less right off the bat have something going on with them differently.
I’ve never watched the show, but in general I know what it’s about and I actually watched the first episode visiting my parents several months ago, I visit them every couple of weeks on a Sunday but because they think that I have that as well, they had me watch the first episode of the good doctor and, I saw how he was like on the heavier end of things.
There is a person who has a channel on TH-cam, who’s at least 30 or a little bit older than that by now like by 1 to 3 years maybe, Dr. Mike, and he does reactions to how realistic some medical dramas are and he actually likes doing reaction videos to the good doctor because not only does he appreciate that I shall put someone with autism into light and show how they kind of react in general, he likes that the show is second from the top of how medically accurate a medical/hospital show can be. Number one was ER. 😄
But, this video, I decided to watch because I wasn’t totally sure how real compared to that the show actually makes him, and listening to the narrator say that people with autism might be different in their own special ways, they can still lead full lives in some of them have great niches and what they learn and I have intellectual in some areas, and the video actually made me tear up just a little bit because even though I don’t think we have it, with a minor possibility that I could if I have that and was miss diagnosed with ADD, and enough people see that there is something about me between coworkers of mine, acquaintance friends on Facebook and close friends that I hang out with often, believe me to have that and or know that there is something very different about me.
But I just appreciated that video. 🙂

I have to agree the actor is amazing I really like the good doctor
My first grandson was diagnosed “high functioning autism” at 2 and 1/2 years of age. He was our oldest son’s firstborn child. I began noticing that our grandson was having difficulties with talking and began to just mumble on so to speak (babble). I noticed his lack of eye contact early on at just a few months old. He didn’t like to be hugged or kissed. This led me to express my concerns to our son and his wife. They finally agreed to have him seen by a pediatric neurologist and he was diagnosed. The doctor ordered him to begin school ASAP and also therapy. He had to ride a small school bus and he was still in diapers!..(broke my heart). We had a time with him while trying to potty train because he would scream at the top of his lungs as though it was torment. We finally just gave up and then at 3 and 1/2 years of age, he woke up one morning, went in the bathroom, took off his diaper and peed in the potty!!!..(and continued on with peeing and pooping like he had been at it for sometime already)!..I told his doctor about his potty training adventure and she said that this was typical for his diagnosis and that “it’s just the way that his mind works”!..It’s as though he was taking everything in that we were trying to teach him, but, he would only do them when something clicked in his brain. He is 19 years old now and is as smart as a whip! He amazes me to this day. He and I were closer than anyone, and to this day we still are close. He still has difficulty in socializing but I’m praying that this gets better also. I still worry about him though because I love him so much.❤️

I can not make eye contact properly and pretend to be awkward and talk weird, I dont but I can does that make me an amazing actor, acording to half the comments it does.
My fiancé has autism he is literally my favorite person I’ve never actually told him that but I’m sure I make it obvious.
My gripe with this show is why didn't they just cast an autistic person? There is no shortage of autistic actors
Is there anyone among you who has similar visions ,images and voices that help to figure things out ? I'm talking about a cascade of hidden informations that due to sudden intuitions unfold in a vivid manner in your thoughts ? It's almost like being able to see the mechanism of thinking right to the answer .

I think it's pretty good. I appear to people just like he does. I have a diagnosis with doctors saying, you? 100 percent. And I'm the only one who thinks I'm normal and not really autistic. Seeing him helps me to get that people and doctors might be correct. Of course all autistics are different, so I get that some people say some things don't fit so good. But I also get that acting and shows need to overdue a few things so they are noticed better.
It's great to see high functioning autism being portrayed but they also need to show the devastating side of autistic children who need 24/7 care and where the parents battle to cope with a very low functioning autistic child. Roughly 1 in 25 or 30 boys are now diagnosed with some kind of autism. And yes, vaccines DO cause autism but it's not the only cause.
They should have called the series Sharlok Doctor

Yes autism is a big spectrum disorder. I have aspbergers so i consider myself on the higher end of the spectrum snd im very diffrent from a savant.

Even if it's imperfect, exegetes or misses sometimes, the the general picture is good, enjoyable and educational.
Number two is entirely inaccurate. Savant syndrome does not just show up in Autistic people who are otherwise extremely compromised. Any Autistic individual can display savant-level skills in anything and they often do, it just isn't recognized by those around them. Look at an Autistic person's special interests and that is often where you will find it manifesting... Also, the trope that most or many Autistic people ARE extremely compromised to the point of disability, by virtue of their Autism alone, is absolutely false and dangerous. It continues to reinforce negative opinions of Autistic children and adults. Additionally, we are not inherently intellectually challenged. Being Autistic is simply having a different neurotype. We process things differently than Allistic/Neurotypical people do and we have particular sensitivities related to our senses. For most of us, our "disability" is created by trying to fit into societal models and systems not made for us.
I am glad to see more and more representation of Autistic folks in television and films but there are still many harmful stereotypes out there that sneak into the writing, which does us seroius harm. Atypical and The Good Doctor finally gained actually Autistic consultants, which makes a world of difference. The quality of the shows and the accuracy of the writing has increased, dramatically. OUR voices are indeed the ones that need to guide such representations. Nothing about us without us.
An excellent show that has accurate character development and genuine Autistic actors playing realistic Autistic characters is FreeForm's Everything's Going To Be Ok. More of that, please. All of that being said, The Good Doctor is an excellent show and I enjoy Freddie Highmore's acting, tremendously.
