How to Program Workouts as a Personal Trainer | Personal Training Program Phasing

  • In this video from Sorta Healthy, we start to go over programming as a personal trainer. Programming or program design, is a fairly complicated process if you are a personal trainer who is taking all variables into consideration.
    Due to this, our video here is just part one in a series that will focus entirely on how to program effectively as a personal trainer. In this video we dive into phasing which is a term that is often used along side Periodization. Both phasing and periodization are essential to creating a successful exercise program for personal training clients.
    Unfortunately, some personal training certification programs over complicate this process, or gear their recommended phasing and periodization protocols towards athletes.
    For most personal trainers, who work with average, everyday people, who want to lose weight, this information is only so useful.
    We aim to give trainers more usable methods of phasing their clients routines for better results!

    This is amazing! I am an aspiring online personal trainer / coach and I've been reading a tonne about this kind of stuff from papers and books. But it wasn't clear to me how to actually periodise and still progressively overload at the same time. My mum is my first 'client' so I really want to do a good job with her and get things right and this video has really, REALLY helped so thanks so much!! Thank you! I’m glad that you’re finding everything helpful! We’ll have an app solution at some point for sure.
      I’m not gonna lie though, I think even at that point paper and pencil (the way we use these charts now) will probably be better.
      You end up making tons of changes to people’s workout charts in the middle of their sessions. Doing that with paper and pencil is easier then it is via app, or tablet, etc. Paper and pencil definitely works best for training having tried both. That being said, we’ll still be exploring more options at some point.

      Kevin Price thanks for the feedback it means a lot! Good question! Once they go through all of the phases typically they go back to the first one again. That foundational phase is meant to serve as a more free form phase after going through it the initial time. It has a rep count of 8-20 so it’s at at the trainers discretion as to what they think works best for the client

      Maybe I’ll try to spend some extra time on it in an upcoming video!
      For now though, I’d try to think of the metabolic phase as pretty similar to the muscular endurance phase but with a few extra metabolic movements thrown in. Things like battle rope waves, an interval or two on the rowing machine mid session would appear more often in the metabolic phase.

    Hey,
    all your content is so amazing!!! I so so appreciate that! Quick question (maybe dumb) - if I go through all the phases, let's say I have an experienced lifter, aim for "physique" - I could potentially skip the foundation phase yes, and move on with hypertrophy, then muscular endurance followed by strength. If I worked through all these phases, do I then start from the beginning? Again hypertrophy, endurance, strength?

    • @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
      @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not a dumb question! Yes-you can do that. And then correct, you would either go back to the beginning, continue with one phase longer or reevaluate goals and potentially go to a different track.

    I feel like certain muscle groups require slightly different rep ranges for being in these categories. Like for examples calf raises and shrugs have such a small ROM that I think you can basically double the rep ranges of each category.

    • @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
      @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t know if I agree about doubling the rep ranges but ya you can definitely go outside of the rep ranges if needed. They’re just meant to be a guide you don’t have to follow them to a tee.

    Please make a video about how important is resistance training on the process of loosing weight, I notice that a lot of people that go to the gym only focus on cardio in the believe that this activity is enough to loose the weight.

    • @kingfiggaz
      @kingfiggaz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Without resistance training you will look "skinny fat". People think cardio burns "fat" when in actuality it burns calories. You need resistance training to at least maintain existing muscle while you burn calories. This prevents the aforementioned "skinny fat" look.

    Hey friend! I have a question and I really hope you can help me. Following phasing methods, if an individual is looking to LOSE WEIGHT and I work with him on foundation phase then muscular endurance phase, and then hypertrophy phase will I have to change his diet to bulk during hypertrophy and strength phasing so that he can pack some muscles???

    • @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
      @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! I would say no! If their main goal is weight loss, the only way they’ll lose weight is by being in a caloric deficit. So keep your client in a caloric deficit, even in those other phases.
      If their goals change later on, and they become more interested in muscle mass, than I would start adding in more foods to help with gaining weight or bulking. Keep phasing them just like you are, that sounds good!

    • @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
      @SortaHealthyTrainerEducation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We don’t phase people who only come in once a week. We call once a week “maintenance” because you can’t really expect to make much progress doing it that way. We put the people who come in twice a week or more into the phasing system that most closely aligned with their goals. So a client looking to lose weight would start in total body lean and a client looking to gain strength would start off in strength first.
