FIRST: Talk to a lawyer. Immediately. Get security cameras for your home. Make sure you have audio on your front porch and anywhere else someone might accost you. Maybe something to record your phone calls as well. There's no way of knowing what their agenda is or how they might get you, or if THEY are recording and plan on editing what you say. This smells sketchy as hell and it really could be anyone, and who knows what their real plan is. Other than that they're trying to intimidate and catch you off guard, and dodging your questions about who the hell they really are. It could be about iddy, it could be about politics and he's a red herring meant to distract you, who knows. But if they have a PI license you'll probably be able to identify them eventually if you push hard enough. I'm also glad you went public so fast. Word hits other influencers and they're ready when these guys show up, someone is bound to catch them on camera and then the whole thing blows open.
Oh, and don't buy their story. They may well be former law enforcement, but it sounds like they're taking the tone of "we're investigating your but don't worry you're in the clear" because they're doing something either embarrassing or outright illegal. Or trying to trap you into saying something someone else can sue you for, or put you on a criminal complaint over, or air out of context in a news report or something.
Oh and I think you were right not to play along with them about being paid. If the whole thing was recorded by them (and not you!) then getting you to say something like that might have been the whole point.
