    I finally did this after years at staring at a blank display. Having a decent soldering iron helps a lot. Thanks for posting this!!

    Dude thank you so much! I bought my truck new in 2006 and the compass/temp stopped working right around 60,200 miles, just after the warranty ran out. The dealers told me they could repair it for $225. I didn’t have that kind of money back then, not to mention TH-cam didn’t really exist. On a whim, when I was cleaning my truck, I decided to do a quick search. Booom!! 30 minutes later, the compass/temp works at 0 cost. Can’t thank you enough for the vid.

    Just fixed mine and saw my display come back after it being broken for like 7 years.
    Thanks for the vid!

    Thanks sooooo much - this hasn't worked in 5 years, and with your great video it took me about 15 minutes to fix it !

    I know this video is old, but the fix still works! The original resistors are 1 watt resistors, so I would recommend sticking with 1w if you can

    I am so grateful for your video. I am electronically challenged and was very nervous to try this. But your instructions were so clear and easy to follow. And it WORKED! Thank you thank you

    We just fixed our 2005 Tacoma compass sensor thanks to this video. We actually only had to resolder the bottom 510, as it had popped off on one side, but was still in perfect condition. We've been driving our truck around for at least 10+ years with this not working and it took all of 30 minutes to fix! Thanks!!

      That’s great! I did that too and did last for a while. Hopefully your lasts! If not you know how to fix it with some replacement parts.

      @@WadeofAllTrades we're hoping so as well! Now that I know you can buy the resistors that you used, it should keep it working for as long as we have it! It's still a great truck. We also have a 2019 tundra. We're loyal toyota owners 😂

    We have the gear to work on surface mount electronics at my office, once under the microscope, it was just cold solder joints!! I bet for most people if you just reheat the connections and add a bit more solder there’s no need to replace the parts. You just need the super fine tip on your iron.

    Nicely done. Great idea about replacing them with more robust resistors.

    So I did this fix and I used 2 2w 51 ohm resistors and it worked for 10 seconds, then it got super hot and turned off again… what did I do wrong… should I go with 1watt instead?

  • @MelloGee33

    What a dilemma. I've seen countless suggestions just like this all across the Internet already, but I'm afraid to even start taking things apart myself. I have a great way of screwing things up worse than they were before I started. I know it's a 'cheap fix', but the dilemma is, the Toyota dealerships will charge upwards of $900 just to 'remedy' this very same problem. 😕

  • @nprenger
    @nprenger ปีที่แล้ว

    Are those two surface mount resistors is parallel? And are they 51 ohms each? I’m just wondering because only one of my original resistors keeps disconnecting. Maybe I’ll just disconnect them both and do it like you’ve done here.

    I'm gonna try this since one of the resistors on mine is missing.
    How long has this repair lasted since you fixed it?

    Thanks for the video. Is it possible to increase the brightness of the alpha-numeric display itself?

    • @WadeofAllTrades
      @WadeofAllTrades  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t believe there is anyway to adjust the brightness manually. I think there is two brightness levels one when the lights are on and one when they are off. But it cannot be adjusted.

    Never done anything like this b4. Does it matter what side is what on the resistors. Like a positive and negative side or is just whatever. As in solder both sides ect... thanks

    • @WadeofAllTrades
      @WadeofAllTrades  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No it doesn’t matter which side of the resistor. Just lay them on like I show and solder them to the board.

    Will a 1/4 or 1/2 Watt 510 ohm resistor work... Or does it have to be 1 Watt?

    • @WadeofAllTrades
      @WadeofAllTrades  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure. I would go for the 1/2 watt of you got them. It’s overkill too but at least you shouldn’t have to fix it again in the future. The ones I used where way overkill.

    • @Nadnad6996

      51 Ohm NOT 510 ohm. I bought 510 Ohm because of your comment and they don’t work.

    • @nan-alive2020
      @nan-alive2020 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought the 510 ohm and doubled them like advised. It works. Although the display is quite dim. Maybe too much resistance?

    I bought my truck used . I fixed the compass/temp just this way,thank you. When I went to remount it one of the metal clips was missing. Does anyone know where I can buy one?Damn Toyota probably wants $20.00 each.

    • @WadeofAllTrades
      @WadeofAllTrades  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool! I am glad you got it fixed. Yeah that clip will pop off so often. Did you check up in the roof with a magnet? Sometimes they are up there. I believe Toyota dealer is the only place to get those clips.

Thank you once more. Keep up the videos.

    Where can I find the unit, grey plastic trim piece that goes around it and the temp censor that goes behind the grille?

    • @WadeofAllTrades

      You would have to go to a dealership or auto wrecker for that piece.
